## Bristol City of Sanctuary

# **Trustees’ Annual Report for the period from 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022**

_**Charity name: Bristol City of Sanctuary Charity registration number: 1177122**_

## **Objectives and Activities**

**For the public benefit:**

**(1) The promotion of social inclusion for the public benefit among people who are refugees and asylum seekers, socially excluded on the grounds of their social and economic position, by promoting and/or co-ordinating services and facilities to assist them to adapt within a new community.**

**(2) The relief of financial hardship among asylum seekers and refugees living or working in Bristol and surrounding areas by acting as an umbrella and resource for local refugee support services.**

**(3) The advancement of the education of the public in general about the issues relating to refugees and those seeking asylum and human rights.**

**(4) The promotion of equality and diversity for the public benefit by promoting activities to foster understanding and good relations between the general public and people seeking sanctuary.**

## **Public Benefit**

**In fulfilling the above objectives the Trustees at all times have regard to the Charity Commission's guidance on Public Benefit.**

## **Chairs’ report**

From April to November 2021, Anna Wardell stepped up to the post of interim manager. She ably held the organisation until we were able to recruit Sarah Cooper on a one year fixed term contract from November 21 to November 22. Sarah came with extensive experience in business and seconded for the hours needed in the post from her university position as a Careers Consultant, with a particular focus on international students. We are especially grateful to her for assisting the Board in putting in a full up to date suite of policies for BCoS, and for laying the ground for further fund-raising.

The role and profile of Bristol City of Sanctuary remains strong in the city through the work of our staff and trustees, together with Bristol University interns Freya, Lauren and Daisy. We thank them all for their commitment and input. Some notable activitees during the year are given below

Caroline Beatty, Susana Askew, co-chairs

## : **Activity Highlights**

## 1. **10[th] Anniversary Celebrations**

In June the City could proudly claim ten years as a City of Sanctuary. BCoS ensured this was celebrated with night lighting of City Hall, a series of online ‘teach-outs’ and a fund-raising auction

## 2. **Advocacy and Representation**

_Show Your Heart_ was a striking visual event, using the symbol of orange Hearts on boats as they sailed through the harbour. The public then gathered at the Tree of Sanctuary on College Green to hear speakers with lived experience of seeking sanctuary tell of life saving significance of being welcomed in the city.

A series of public events during the year drew attention to the Nationality and Borders Bill, which runs counter to the Refugee Convention. Throughout the year we have expressed profound concern about new restrictive plans in asylum policy - via the website, in coordinating petitions and letter writing and in getting 1000 local signatures on an Open Statement to the Home Secretary.

## 3. **Transport Fund**

The Transport Fund continues to thrive. Through the continuing partnership with First Bus, the Transport Fund work brings awareness raising amongst the public about the reality of seeking asylum, together with access to urgently needed bus travel. The scheme’s scope has been extended and we are grateful for the continuing relationship with First Bus. A highly successful Sanctuary Walk raised a total of over £3300 for the fund.

## 4. **Schools and Colleges of Sanctuary**

A number of new Schools and colleges have coming forward to receive this award, including Blaise High School, St Mary Redcliffe Primary, Oasis Academy, City of Bristol College, Easton Academy. We rely heavily on the volunteer team which supports this Stream of Sanctuary

## 5. **Bristol Refugee and Asylum Seeker Partnership**

BCoS has continued to attend and play its part in BRASP, especially in the role of strategic development.

## 6. **Website and Social Media**

Anna continued to provide an excellent series of newsletters and made improvements to the website

## **7. Interns**

We have had excellent input this year, in particular to social media and donor fundraising, from Bristol University interns Freya Mutimer, Lauren Brown and Daisy Robins. Following her internship Freya also joined the Trustee Board of BCoS.

## **8. Business Stream**

Sarah laid foundations for starting a business stream of sanctuary in Bristol
