**Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document & strategic plan.** 

**To advance the education of children in North Lincolnshire by the provision of support to improve their literacy skills.** 

**Priority 1 – Campaign locally to raise awareness of the importance of reading. Helping the community to understand the impact reading has on lifelong learning, health & wellbeing and improved life chances.** 

- **Promotion of trust** via website, Facebook & Twitter. This year we have updated the website and created an Instagram account. 

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)** 

- **North Lincolnshire Year of Reading 2023** From January 2023 to March 2024 the North Lincolnshire Children’s Literacy Trust in partnership with North Lincolnshire Council and our community partners funded events and activities across North Lincolnshire linked to promoting reading and reading for pleasure. Over 100 events and activities took place including authors such as Patrice Lawrence and Rachel Morrisroe, poets such as Benjamin Zephaniah and Joseph Coelho, illustrators such as Nick Sharratt and family storytelling and theatre, including Luna Loves Library Day, A Bagful of Stars, The Greatest Robot Ever, Pirate Bonnie and much more. 

- Over the year our charity sponsored a number of local events and projects provided by our community partners linked to reading and reading for pleasure, this included small grants, book gifting and competition prizes awarded to: Althorpe & Keadby School, Lincoln Gardens School, Be APT, Folk Lincs, Rotary Club, Social Circle, Barrow Pre-School, Humber Estuary Federation, Crowle Peatland Railway, Baths Hall, No Limits Festival, School Readiness Event, Barton Town Partnership (Ropewalk) and more. 

**Priority 2 - Promoting and supporting new and established children’s literacy initiatives to inspire a generation of children to read, grow and succeed.** 

- **Making Big Memories with Little Babies** celebrated over 5 years of book gifting with a special celebration held at Ashby Community Hub. Volunteers involved in the project, ward staff and families previously in receipt of the gifts were invited to help us celebrate this landmark occasion. In addition to this a further £2500 was raised to support the continuation of the

project. Thus included £1000 from Tesco, plus £1500 raised via the sponsored ‘10 Peak Challenge’ The funds have supported purchasing 500 gift packs, which now also include a finger puppet. 

- **Breakfast & Books** – The North Lincolnshire Children’s Literacy Trust in partnership with North Lincolnshire Council Libraries and several community partners continues to provide free breakfast and book themed activities in three community hubs (Ashby/Riddings, Brigg and Scunthorpe Central) over the key holiday periods. A £1000 Tesco Groundworks community grant, Fuelled funding and donations from ASDA have provided food, resources, and activities over the year. 

- **FREE Books for children/families –** Over the past year we have sourced thousands of free and heavily subsidised books for our local schools and children across North Lincolnshire. These have come from partners including; The Rabbit Hole, Bookmark, Penguin Books, Dollywood UK, Positive Activities, The Reading Agency, SSE Thermal, Walker Books, Multiply, UKSPF and more. 

- **Year of Reading Grant Funded ‘Projects’ included** 

   - **Secondary School Reading Support £5000 (Wrendale).** £1000 grants gifted to the following schools to support struggling and reluctant readers, to help them engage in reading. **Melior Academy, The St Lawrences Academy, St Hugh’s School, Frederick Gough School and Huntcliff Academy.** Schools chose to spend the money on support programmes and appropriate books and resources. Case Studies were provided at the end of the year on the impact and outcomes of the funding. 

   - **Everest Files Reading Challenge £3190 (SSE Thermal)** Y5/Y6 pupils from **Althorpe & Keadby Primary, Crowle Primary, Crowle St Norberts Primary, Luddington & Garthorpe Primary and Eastoft Primary** , took part in the Everest Files Challenge during June - September 2023. They attended workshops with author/explorer Matt Dickinson and were given copies of his book Everest Files. Children who read the story over summer and completed the challenge were gifted £10 gift vouchers and there were additional £25 vouchers for the winners of the art/writing competition. Funding left from the project was used to buy books, which were gifted to children at the Althorpe & Keadby Christmas Fair. 

   - **Isle Stay & Play IL Book Chatter/Book Gifting £1560 (SSE Thermal)** 

      - Ten Stay & Play and Early Years groups based on the Isle were support though 2023/2024 to develop their reading skills/offer. They were given 1 year’s supply of Imagination Library books and invited to take part in Book Chatter training, and 1:1 support visits, which gave them access to further resources and support. 

**Priority 3 – Develop relationship with Key Stakeholders to further the impact of our work. Identify opportunities to collaborate with a range of stakeholders who will support our mission, helping us to secure the longevity and success of projects and helping us to further sustain and extend our reach.**

funding from Scunthorpe Rotary, SSE Thermal, Tesco, Asda and Morrisons to fund the work of the trust. • Partnerships continue to grow and strengthen with national organisations such as the Foyle Foundation, National Literacy Trust and Book Trust, Dollywood UK and Walker Books, plus The People’s Postcode Lottery, who have supported events and projects over the year. In addition to this we have established a partnership with Severn Trent Water, who have agreed to fund the new Epworth Hub Children’s library costing **over £30,000 (to be awarded in 2023/2024 financial year)** • North Lincolnshire Council have continued to support the trust with support in kind to ensure projects are able to be delivered and sustained. **Priority 4** – **Organisation development, building our capacity and capability. Ensure sustainability and quality of the trust through effective governance, financial resilience, and operational excellence.** • Website and social media pages have been updated to include the new logo and social media updates. • Annual accounts 2023/2024 checked and verified by external accountant. • Grant funding sourced from local, regional and national community partners.
