**Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document & strategic plan.** 

**To advance the education of children in North Lincolnshire by the provision of support to improve their literacy skills.** 

**Priority 1 – Campaign locally to raise awareness of the importance of reading. Helping the community to understand the impact reading has on lifelong learning, health & wellbeing and improved life chances.** 

- **Promotion of trust** via website, Facebook & Twitter 

- **Sponsorship of local events** such as Power of Words Festival and No Limits Festival supporting making arts and cultural events linked to literacy more accessible for local children and families. Events and activities are provided for free/very low charge to reduce barriers to attendance.

- **North Lincolnshire Year of Reading -** From January 2023 the North Lincolnshire Children’s Literacy Trust in partnership with North Lincolnshire Council have funding events and activities as part of the North Lincolnshire Year of Reading. This has so far included author, poet and illustrator visits, family storytelling and theatre, reading themed arts and crafts workshops and more. In addition to this we have received grant funding from SSE, Arnold Clark and Wrendale for year of reading events and projects. A range of promotional campaign material produced in partnership with North Lincolnshire Council. Here is a sample: 


**Priority 2 - Promoting and supporting new and established children’s literacy initiatives to inspire a generation of children to read, grow and succeed.** 

- **Making Big Memories with Little Babies** initiative established in partnership with The Health Tree Foundation, Scunthorpe General Hospital, ensures that families with babies on the neonatal intensive care unit receive a gift bag containing a book, nursery rhyme CD and information about the importance of families sharing songs and stories with their baby whilst in hospital to help aid brain development, communication and bonding. **Project continues into it’s 5[th] Year.** 

- **Breakfast & Books** – The North Lincolnshire Children’s Literacy Trust continues to support the free breakfast and activities in three community hubs (Riddings, Brigg and Scunthorpe Central)

over the key holiday periods. A £1000 Tesco Groundworks community grant has provided food, resources, and events over the year. Moving forwards Tesco and Fuelled funding will support the programme. 

- **FREE Books for children –** Over the year we have sourced thousands of free books for local schools and children across North Lincolnshire. These have come from, BookMark, Penguin Books, Pineapple Books, Positive Activities and KCOM. 

- **Year of Reading Grant Funded Projects** 

   - **Secondary School Reading Support £5000 (Wrendale).** £1000 grants gifted to the following schools to support struggling and reluctant readers, engage in reading. **Melior Academy, The St Lawrences Academy, St Hugh’s School, Frederick Gough School and Huntcliff Academy.** Schools have chosen to spend the money on support programmes and appropriate books and resources. Case Studies to be provided at the end of the year on the impact of the funding. 

   - **Everest Files Reading Challenge £3190 (SSE)** Y5/Y6 pupils from Althorpe & Keadby Primary, Crowle Primary, Crowle St Norberts Primary, Luddington & Garthorpe Primary and Eastoft Primary, have been invited to take part in the Everest Files Challenge. They will have a workshop in school with author/explorer Matt Dickinson (June 2023) Following on from this Matt will give them a copy of his book Everest Files and set them the challenge to read the book and complete the challenge poster/competitions over the summer holidays. All children who complete the challenge will receive a £10 gift voucher and certificate of achievement. Additional vouchers will be awarded for Best Artwork, Best Poem etc. Winners will be invited to a special awards ceremony at Crowle Community Hub. 

   - **Isle Stay & Play IL Book Chatter/Book Gifting £1560 (SSE)** Ten Stay & Play and Early Years groups on the Isle have been gifted one year’s supply of Imagination Library books to support promoting reading for pleasure within their stay and play sessions. They have also been offered the opportunity to attend free Book Chatter training to support developing their own knowledge and skills and access further free resources. 

- **Ukraine welcome packs** – We have worked in partnership with Bookmark UK, Ongo and NLC Resettlement team to source and gift 30 welcome packs for families with children (aged 5-9) who started schools in North Lincolnshire during 2022. The packs included dual language books, starting school resources and an tablet device with sim card so that they could keep in contact with relatives back in the Ukraine. 

- **Volunteer Reading Champions** – Volunteer reading champions are now recruited through schools and trained by Words Count. 

**Priority 3 – Develop relationship with Key Stakeholders to further the impact of our work. Identify opportunities to collaborate with a range of stakeholders who will support our mission, helping us to secure the longevity and success of projects and helping us to further sustain and extend our reach.**

grown and develop the work of the trust. Including; North Lincolnshire Council, Educational Schools and Settings, BookMark Charity, Pineapple Books, Penguin Books, BookTrust, CLPE, National Literacy Trust, Norfolk Books, Ongo, Rotary Scunthorpe and Rotary Pentagon, Dollywood UK etc. **Priority 4** – **Organisation development, building our capacity and capability. Ensure sustainability and quality of the trust through effective governance, financial resilience, and operational excellence.** 

   - New strategic plan created for 2023 – 2026 and agreed by trustees. 

   - • Identification of three further trustees to support and strengthen the work of the trust. Trustees to be officially acknowledge during May 2023 trustee meeting. 

   - • Annual accounts 2022/2023 verified by external accountant. 

   - • Project grant funding sourced.
