Section C Objectives and activities
Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document
To advance the education of children in North Lincolnshire by the provision of support to improve their literacy skills.
Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)
1) Campaigning to promote the social and economic importance of reading, encouraging a shared responsibly across business, public and voluntary communities, to make a positive difference. Promotion of trust via website, Facebook & Twitter Sponsorship of annual Power of Words Festival supporting making arts and cultural events linked to literacy more accessible. Events and activities are provided for free to reduce barriers to attendance. 2) Promoting and supporting new and established children’s literacy initiatives to inspire a generation of children to read, grow and succeed. Making Big Memories with Little Babies initiative established in partnership with The Health Tree Foundation, Scunthorpe General Hospital, ensures that families with babies on the neonatal intensive care unit receive a gift bag containing a book, nursery rhyme CD and information about the importance of families sharing songs and stories with their baby whilst in hospital to help aid brain development, communication and bonding. Project continues. Fun Family Literacy Kits – After the success of last year’s Fun Family Literacy Kits a further 225 family kits have been provided this year to families within the Westcliffe and Althorpe & Keadby area. £2000 funding was received from SSE Windfarms and £2500 funding from ONGO and the Scunthorpe Rotary Club to support this project. Donations of resources were greatly received and supported adding extra value to the kits, which included donations from; Wrendale Designs, Penguin Books, Redan Publishing, Nettl Designs, Morrisons, Sue Hollingsworth, Pam Tatum, Barrington Stoke, Harper Collins, CGP Publishing, National Geographic, Adult Education & Community Learning. Sponsorship of local literacy based events £350 sponsorship awarded to NLCEP for the of Power of Words/Children’s Creativity Festival, which took place on 3[rd] July 2021, areas various North Lincolnshire hubs. Artists included: Chris Mould, Ed Vere, Pif Paf Theatre, Emma Reynolds, Hannah Gold, Jess French, Addy Farmer, Kate Pankhurst and Starlight Arts. £200 sponsorship of ‘Little Peat’ project book launch, in partnership with Crowle Peatland Railway. Book launches on Saturday 10[th] December 2021 Little FREE Library libraries continued to be used. Belton library is particularly popular and have had several book top up’s during the year. We have an agreement with Lindsey Lodge

Volunteer Reading Champions – On hold during Covid/School Closures. Programme to be relaunched in 2022 with schools. Recruitment will be direct with schools and training provided by Words Count/Children’s Literacy Trust.

Section D Achievements and performance
Making Big Memories with Little Babies project continues to Summary of the main deliver free reading resources to families with babies on the achievements of the charity local NICU ward at Scunthorpe General Hospital. Ailsa Leggott during the year has retired, but is now supporting the project as a volunteer. We have enough packs for gifting during 2022. £2000 Funding received from SSE Windfarms for Family Fun Literacy Kit project in partnership with Althorpe & Keadby Primary School (110 – KS2 Kits) £2500 Funding received from Ongo and Scunthorpe Rotary Club for Family Fun Literacy Kits with Westcliffe and Oasis Parkwood Primary Schools (115 – KS1 Kits) £980 Funding receieved from KCOM to purchase 350 copies of the book ‘Starting School’ to support the first North Lincolnshire Let’s Get Ready for School event. Lincs Lotto and Paypal donations received to support ongoing projects. Thousands of free products sourced to support projects including; books, bookmarks, notebooks, pens, pencils, stickers, seeds, bags, plant pots, magazines, cooking ingredients, workbooks, dictionaries and skipping ropes. Supporting local events and artists to provide accessible and inspiring activities and resources for local children to help inspire a love of reading for pleasure and develop literacy skills.

Wrendale Designs have made a wonderful donation of thousands of their products to the trust. This includes Notebooks, Pencils Book Marks and Book Plates. The exact use of these is to be confirmed. However, these will be used across various children and families projects taking place across North Lincolnshire, with our community partners during 2021/2022 i.e. Family Learning – Family Arts & Crafts workshops and Fuelled projects. School Readiness Event, Power of Words Festival etc.

Jan 2022 - Application made to Tesco Bags of Help for £1500 to sustain the North Lincolnshire libraries ‘Breakfast & Books’ programme. Awaiting outcome (can take 12-18 months.) Currently the Brigg Tesco Community Liaison Officer Maria Hardy is supporting the project with food donations. She suggested we submit a grant to help sustain the programme as her budget may struggle to cover the sessions going forward.
