Operational Activities

Elland Silver Band organisation is constituted as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. The organisation continues to operate six musical ensembles to provide brass and percussion opportunities to members aged 7 upwards for all abilities. Operating a Starter, Training, HIT IT Percussion Group, Community, Youth Band and Elland Silver Band. Membership of all training groups continues to grow, and new members have been recruited to Elland Silver Band to fill vacancies. Members are offered a programme of weekly evening & weekend rehearsals, performance opportunities in concerts, festivals and competitions, workshops and masterclasses.

Organisational Development

During 2024, several personnel changes occurred. Specifically, a new Musical Director was appointed to the Elland Silver Band in January 2024. In January 2024 a project was also initiated to bid to the Community Ownership Fund to purchase a new building. Unfortunately, the fund was suspended, and all plans put on hold.

In July 2024, new members were appointed to the Management Committee. In September 2024, a new Outreach Brass Tutor was appointed on an internship. Furthermore, in October 2024, two new Treasurers were appointed to oversee the organization's financial operations. Additionally, recruitment for additional Trustees commenced, with two candidates proposed for election at the AGM. Advertisements were circulated amongst members and also externally using numerous media channels. All recruitment has been undertaken in line with organisational policies with DBS checks undertaken on all officers and volunteers working with young people. All roles have been advertised publicly using suitable media channels, shortlisted and interviews undertaken, with representatives from the Management Committee and independent references sought. All staff are freelance, self-employed roles. Key Achievements

These programs are funded by the schools, covering the costs of the music tutor, In 2024, approximately 150, Year 3 & 4 students participated in taster sessions or whole-class programs. Additionally, 30 students enrolled in small group and individual lessons.

Financial position

The organisation continues to maintain financial stability with income derived from members subscriptions, concert fees, contest fees, donations, sponsorship, grants and GiftAid.

Grants were received from the Finderman Trust, Culturedale, North Dean Trust and The Bearder Trust, supporting running costs, enabling the organisation to continue its music education work, and the Halifax Youth Band Festival.

Sponsorship & donations from local businesses have benefitted our in-house events, such as the Slow Melody Competition.

The successful outreach program in local primary schools more than covered the costs involved, including tutors. The organisation funded coach travel to major events as required and engaged musical directors during a period of some change for Elland Silver Band. Bursaries have also been granted to support members on low incomes and travelling expenses for university students.

All Musical Directors and Tutors are paid as freelance on a self-employed basis.

Reserves of £25,000 are held in a high interest account and £42,000 is held in a restricted fund (Building Fund) with a further sum of £67,000 being held across various current accounts.

The overall funds at the end of 2024 were just over £134,000 with reserve funds of £41,977 held in restricteded funds (i.e.building fund), subject to year-end adjustments and confirmation of Annual Accounts.
