**Statement of the Chair of Trustees for year ending 2022.** OpenEdge has continued to be in huge demand for our Otherness Lab project in particular, as more and more organisations and individuals understand the need for engaging with systemic racism and transforming inclusion. OE has emerged from the covid-19 pandemic trying to move offline and back into working with people and groups in their locations as much as possible. This is growing steadily. (Due to the ongoing political situation in Sri Lanka and the demand for work in the UK, Sarri has not returned to Sri Lanka, but is supporting people remotely, informally.) 

OpenEdge has been supported this year by an experienced fundraiser and director of UK charities, who has been instrumental in supporting OE’s organisational development and fundraising strategy. This year OE has seen a change in Chair. OE continues to build its governance and is .currently recruiting for new trustees 

OE continues to develop collaborations and pilot new activities as well as continue to evolve its established activities, both for the general public and for organisations and groups. This report gives details about our activities and an update on developing the organisation to enhance how .we carry out our charitable purpose in 2023 and beyond 

:In the past year, OpenEdge has undertaken the following work in the UK 

- Supported 9 organisations 

- Continued public workshops on Otherness Lab and Festival of Conflict 

- Given guest presentations, webinars, workshops and mentoring 

- Has taken on a new facilitator and team member 

- Is recruiting for new volunteers and trustees

## **Objectives and activities of the public benefit** 

For the public benefit, OpenEdge – Transforming Conflict will work to advance the prevention, reduction and transformation of violence and :violent conflict in any part of the world with 

- anyone affected by direct and/or structural violence (in the community or workplace) 

- individuals and groups who work with those affected by violence 

- and/or violent conflict (e.g. staff of NGO’s, government agencies or 

- organisations) 

- those whose activities impact and/or influence violence and violent 

- ● conflict (e.g. academics, policy makers, policy implementers, armed ● actors) 

Through a combination of scholarship, research, practical expertise, fundraising, core and project funding and management, OpenEdge Transforming  Conflict  will  guide,  train,  coach,  facilitate,  and  support participants, colleagues and partners in developing their understanding, choices and actions regarding violence and violent conflict both in the UK .and internationally

## **Review of our achievements and performance** 

From November 2021 to November 2022 OpenEdge has completed the following activities 

## Otherness Lab activities 

**Newcastle Uni Students and Staf (1** days training on Anti-racism and white supremacy for first year 3 undergraduate students of Clinical psychology at the University of .Newcastle 

days training for Newcastle Uni Clinical Psychology Staff, on white 2 .supremacy and anti racism, and how to support their students. Ongoing 

**Environmental Funders Network** (2 

Delivered a day long taster session for aprox 80 staff of Environmental change donors, on why decolonising environmental funding is crucial, and how to do it. Planned and marketed longer course for the same group. .Ongoing 

**GROW Project** (3 

Guest facilitator for year long project with young change makers in the South West area. Facilitated workshop on why a lens of systemic .Otherness is essential in change making. 30 participants 

**Stroud District Council EDI Working Group** (4 Supporting a local group to work with their local council’s EDI working .group, to challenge, hold to account and support. Ongoing 

**Peace Pledge Union** (5 

Met with PPU staff individually and collectively to prepare for for an away day supporting them to consider ‘what does pacifism mean to this ’?organisation today 

.Will be delivering the Away Day in November 2022 

**Faculty 4 a Future** (6 

Worked with new movement of environmental researchers to support them in decolonising environmental research. Presented at their launch .event with over 200 participants internationally

Will be supporting with ongoing training and consulting 

**Friends of the Earth (7** 

Working with FoE to support their journey to become an anti-racist organisation. Following ongoing conversations with Friends of the Earth since 2021, this year we began an initial ‘anti-racism’ training and .consultancy role with the organisation. Ongoing 

**Skylarks Transforming Inclusion immersive summer camp (8** For the second year running, OpenEdge has collaborated with Navigate and Change in Nature to deliver a 7-day residential immersive learning journey. We are very excited by the success we are discovering with this model. The outdoor natural setting, coupled with shared camp life and an increasingly somatic/trauma-informed approach appears to be offering a strong and secure container to explorer anti-oppression/ power and .privilege work. Ongoing 

## Festival of Conflict 

**1)Scottish Sculptor Workshop** Supporting an organisation with ongoing conflict through restorative conversations, mediations and training. Ongoing 

**Conflict Research Society Symposium, Birmingham University (2** Guest panelist at a 2-day symposium on ‘what does the future of conflict ’?research in hostile environments look like 

**GROW Project guest mentor** (3 Guest mentored 2 young change makers in their year long project with .Change in Nature 

## **Organisational Development** 

Over the past year the OE team has focussed on: clarifying policies, processes and procedures; addressing availability and resilience within the .team and looking into Trusts and Foundation fundraising 

## **Safeguarding (1** 

We are very pleased to have been able to simplify and update our Safeguarding policy. This will now be easier to keep updated yearly or when there are changes in guidance, whichever is sooner. Sarri Bater remains as Safeguarding Lead and Kristen Lindop is now the Deputy

Safeguarding Lead. Kristen and Sarri have both passed Level 3 Safeguarding Adults Training and all representatives of OE working with the public have taken Level 2 Safeguarding Adults Training or above and .all have relevant DBS checks 

## **Copyright (2** 

Additionally, we investigated copyright and intellectual property law, both to ensure OE receives credit for resources we produce and also to potentially support another income stream in the future. Our better understanding in these areas has helped us feel more confident in how .best to share resources 

## **Policy (3** 

Other areas of policy we will be focussing on updating and improving in the coming year include Safer Recruitment, Volunteer Code of Conduct/Behaviour and Whistleblowing. These updates will be particularly .relevant as we expand our team 

## **Recruitment (4** 

Currently, OpenEdge has recruited another facilitator to the team, who is a person of colour, and he is working with existing staff on a variety of projects. We are also in the process of recruiting more trustees and other volunteers. We hope that incrementally and carefully expanding the team will also support all of us to make further progress in development in: the reach and depth of our work; a clear, multi-level, strategy and fundraising .from new sources, including trusts and foundations 

## **Charity structure (5** 

Early in the year, the team investigated a variety of potential funding sources and what would be required to support applications. This involved careful consideration of a range of non-profit structures and their pros and cons. The team concluded that, generally, in order to access support from funders who are supportive of the change-making community in the UK, an UK based OE charity would need to be set up. All agreed that this would give OE many more opportunities to fundraise from trusts and foundations sympathetic to our work. We have been very careful in each step towards this, for example, we have looked in depth at banks’ ethics and board members. We hope to make this addition of an OpenEdge .Transforming UK charity a realty in the coming year 

## **Funding (6** 

In the meantime, the team identified the Tudor Trust as a good funder to approach with our first application. Conversations with the Trust reassured us that they would consider funding the work we do in the UK, although we are not yet purely UK focussed. An application was submitted, which was unfortunately unsuccessful. However, we all found the process very useful; we now have a clear, concise and well written document on which

to base future applications elsewhere and the Tudor Trust has expressed an interest in talking further with us and building a relationship. We are looking forward to more opportunities to submit funding bids to other in .the coming year 

## **Professional Development** 

In the past year staff have undertaken the following professional :development courses Whiteness@Work online 10 month training • Somatic Social Justice • Trauma informed approach • Co-Liberation Dysgu • • Updated Safeguarding training for all relevant OE staff

The Trustees presents their report and the unaudited financial statements for the period from
1st January 2021 to 31st December 2022.

As the Trustees of the Charity you are responsible for the preparation of the Financial Statements
in accordance with the requirements of the Charrties Act 2011 1.the ACY)
I report in respect of my examination of the Charity's Financial Statements carried out under
Section 145 of the 2011 Act, and in carrying out my examination. I have ft)Ilowed all applicable
directions given by the Charity Commission under Section 145{5)Ibl of the Act.

I have completed my examination. I confimi that no material matters have come to my attenb'on in
connection with the exarnination giving me cause to believe that any material re5pect-.
1. Accounting records were not kepl in respect of the Chartty as required by Section 130
