As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”_ John 13:34–35 (NIV) ## As I reflect on the past year, I am filled with gratitude for all that God has done among us. It has been a year of worship, unity, and spiritual growth, and I give thanks to God for His faithfulness and for each member of our church family. Yet the year began with a devastating blow. On 2nd January some of the church family were clearing the church when our pioneer evangelist Hayley received a phone call from her sister with the heart-breaking news that her mum had died whilst on holiday in Jamaica. I want to begin my report by paying tribute to Hayley’s mum Kim, and to Hayley who, despite her grief, has continued in her work with remarkable strength, grace and dedication, being a true blessing to those around her. ## New Year Preaching Series We began the year with a preaching series on **What is Worship?** – exploring worship in its fullness, not only in song and prayer, but also in giving, in love, and in unity. This series encouraged us to see worship as the foundation of our lives as disciples of Christ. **Worship in Giving:** We started by considering Worship in Giving, reflecting on God’s generosity towards us and how we, in turn, respond with generosity. We serve a generous God, who lavishes His grace, love, and provision upon us. Throughout the year, I have been encouraged by the generosity of our congregation, not only in financial giving but also in time, talents, and hospitality. From supporting those in need to faithfully sustaining the life of the church, we have seen the fruit of a giving heart within our community. **Worship in Love:** We then explored Worship in Love, giving thanks for the deep and abiding love of God and the love we share as a church family. The bonds of friendship within our church family are strong, and this past year has been a testament to that love in action. Whether in pastoral care, practical support, or simply in being a welcoming community, we have sought to reflect the love of Christ to one another and to those around us. **Worship in Unity:** Finally, we looked at Worship in Unity, celebrating the unity of the Trinity – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – and our call to reflect that unity in our relationships with one another. This was particularly relevant as we gave thanks for the strong relationships we share with the other churches on the St Helier Estate. We are blessed to work alongside them in ministry and mission, seeking together to be salt and light in our community. ## Joint Easter Services with Revival City Church One of the great joys of the year were our joint Easter services with Revival City Church. Coming together to celebrate the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ was a powerful expression of the unity we share in the gospel. Our joint services enabled us to worship alongside brothers and sisters from different traditions, reminding us that Christ’s church is bigger than any one congregation. From our shared Good Friday reflection, to the joyful celebration of Easter Sunday, these services deepened our fellowship and strengthened our witness to the wider community. ## Sermon Series: The “I Am” Sayings of Jesus Later in the year, we embarked on a sermon series exploring the **“I Am”** sayings of Jesus in the Gospel of John. This series allowed us to delve deeper into the identity of Christ and what it means for us as His followers. 2 - **“I am the Bread of Life”** We reflected on Jesus as the one who truly satisfies our hunger, both spiritually and physically. This challenged us to consider where we seek our nourishment and to trust in Him as our ultimate provider. - **“I am the Light of the World”** We were reminded of the call to walk in the light, turning away from darkness and living as witnesses of Christ’s truth. - **“I am the Good Shepherd”** We found comfort in Jesus’ loving care and guidance, knowing that He calls each of us by name and lays down His life for His sheep. - **“I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life”** This sermon encouraged us to trust fully in Christ as the only way to the Father, deepening our faith in His saving grace. - **“I am the Resurrection and the Life”** We rejoiced in the hope we have in Christ, who conquered death and offers eternal life to all who believe in Him. ## Post-Alpha Group The Wednesday night post Alpha group was one of three groups in the diocese to embark on the new evangelism two-year course **‘Magnify’** . At the time of writing, we are halfway through the course material and all are growing in confidence and desire to share the love of Christ in word and action. We are grateful for Dean of Estates ministry Gary Jenkins and his team for the course material and we look forward to celebrating those who will become estate lay pioneers. In the summer we went out with angel wings to the St Helier music festival (please see Hayley’s report). In September we were delighted to be chosen to produce the Church Of England Nation on-line service. In October we were thrilled to welcome our new community pastoral worker Luke Marlow. Luke has been a blessing to the team, the church and the wider parish (please see his report). We also had a wonderful afternoon in October as the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby joined us to hear stories of transformation. He prayed for us and we prayed for him. We began a new daytime Alpha at Bishop Andrewes’ Church. The group continues to meet, and one member was baptised. We continue to thank God for the Alpha course! October ended with a celebration of the Light Of The World (please see Luke’s report). As the year drew to a close, we gathered for moving Remembrance services, honouring those who sacrificed for others. Helga led the service at Bishop Andrewes’, and at St Peter’s, as well as laying wreaths for WW1 & WW2, we also laid a wreath for those soldiers who were not honoured because of the colour of their skin. Once again, a wreath was laid by those who fight for others against domestic abuse and for those who have lost their lives. A wreath was laid by Val and Ray Donovan on behalf of all those that have lost their lives due to violence on our streets. In December, our Christmas celebrations were filled with joy, worship, community, and testimonies refecting on the theme ‘The light shines in the darkness’. With much gratitude for the past year, we look forward in faith to all that God has in store. As we move into a new year, my prayer is that we continue to grow in worship, love, and unity. There is much to give thanks for, and much still to do. May we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, and continue to serve Him with joy and dedication. Thank you all for your faithfulness, your generosity, and your commitment to God’s work in this place. May we go forward together in the power of the Holy Spirit, trusting in the Lord for all that is to come. Blessings, ## _Revd Tracy_ 3 ## **Parish of St Helier Treasurer Report for APCM 22.5.2025** _“Give and it will be given to you”_ Luke 6:38 When we give, we will receive back greater: with greater income received in 2024 we were able to donate to other charities and bless them. ## Income Our Income 2024 has increased by 32% from 2023, this being received with more generous income from Planned Giving and General Collection. This allows us to invest in God’s mission and to offer a warm and welcoming space for all. We received a generation donation towards replacing the Kitchen at Bishop Andrewes’ Church. This has been a true blessing to us and all groups that share our welcoming space. We were awarded a Grant to allows us to secure a Community Pastoral Worker, which has benefitted our Church Family and our local community; without this Grant we would not have been able to have our Community Pastoral Worker. Other Grants secured have allowed us to improve our space at Bishops Andrewes’ Church which went towards the Kitchen refit, refurbishment of both hall spaces and improvement of the front entrance to Bishop Andrewes’ Church. The new entrance has been made safe and more welcoming. We have welcomed new groups and hall hirers to utilitise our spaces, which has resulted in our Hall Hire income increasing by just over £7,000. Lastly, Income Tax Received for 2024 was higher than usual. This was due to an administrative query in 2023 which meant a gift aid claim was received later than expected and received in 2024. ## Expenditure Categories of expenditure are overall down from 2023 fees, due to maintaining good relationships with suppliers, and works completed. We are keen to use local companies where possible to build and support our local businesses for works carried out. We were able to increase our Parish Pledge (Diocesan Quota) by £3,000, taking our annual contribution to £21,000. The Parish Pledge is a fee that pays the Diocese towards Staffing and funds projects throughout the Diocese. New kitchen installed at Bishop Andrewes’ Church with a kind donation and grant received to the work completed. The refurbishment of Bishop Andrewes’ Church Halls and Front Entrance was covered fully by grants received. New expenditure categories to cover Employment for our Community Pastoral Worker, this has enabled us outreach more to our local community and to continue to do so. Please refer to the financial statement attached for exact details of the church’s income and expenditure in 2024. The financial records were examined and approved by an independent examiner. _Rebecca Farr (Treasurer of St Helier PCC)_ _If you are a taxpayer and have not yet signed up for gift aid and you would like to or would like further information, please see myself._ ## **Electoral Roll** In accordance with the Church Representation Rules, a new Electoral Roll is being prepared in 2025. As this is a full revision, all previous entries are being removed, and everyone wishing to be included must submit a new application. We have given notice of this for the past four weeks at the Sunday services. At the time of writing, the revision process is still ongoing. The final number on the new Electoral Roll will be reported at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting and sent to the diocese at the appropriate time. 4 **Fabric Report for 2024** Parish of St Peter’s and Bishop Andrewes’ Church ## St Peter’s Church We are sincerely thankful to Trevor Hennessey and Peter Harris for their faithful and ongoing care of both the interior and exterior of St Peter’s Church. Their work is invaluable, and we are truly grateful for their commitment. We were delighted to be able to offer our office space at a minimal rental fee (to cover electricity and heating) to Sutton Schools Work. Sutton Women’s Centre continued to use the kitchen and hall area for cooking classes periodically. The Centre of Mission Youth club continues on Thursday afternoons as well as Youth and Adult Alpha groups. This year, the following maintenance and safety measures were carried out: - Full safety inspections for electricity, gas, and fire systems - Gutter clearance - Testing of the lightning conductor - A long-standing issue was resolved with the removal of an unused water tank situated on the roof above the accessible toilet. This tank had been causing flooding, and its removal was followed by a full recovery of the roof area. We are aware that redecorating work is needed in several areas of the building. We are currently exploring funding opportunities to help us undertake these improvements in the near future. ## Bishop Andrewes’ Church Bishop Andrewes’ continues to be a vibrant and wellused community space throughout the week. The building serves many, including: - Scouts, Cubs, and Beavers - Zumba fitness classes - Food bank - Centre Of Mission projects, Community Café and Art and Well-being sessions We are especially blessed by our partnership with Revival City Church, who meet on Sunday afternoons after the Parish Communion service and also hold Friday evening prayers and occasional Saturday gatherings. This year, we were delighted to receive a grant of £8,370 from the Church Buildings Council (90% of the total project cost) following an application by Rev Tracy for refurbishment of the main external entrance. Upon receipt of a faculty, the following improvements were made: - Installation of new solid oak external doors, stained to match existing finishes, with updated ironmongery - Security lighting installed at the front entrance - Jet-washing of steps and paving to remove moss and staining - Application of brick-cleaning solution - Repointing of brickwork, replacing damaged or missing mortar We are also deeply grateful to The Church of the Good Shepherd, Carshalton, for their generous financial support (see Financial Report). Their gift enabled the installation of a new kitchen, enhancing our hospitality and outreach capabilities. Additional works included: - Full internal redecoration - Installation of minor but necessary electrical points - Floor re-polishing and sanctuary carpeting, generously funded by Revival City Church As with St Peter’s, all statutory safety inspections have been carried out, including fire, gas, electrical, and lightning protection testing. ## Quinquennial works We have completed all urgent and ‘within 12 months’ (apart from 1) works listed in the 2021 report. We have also completed serval works ‘within five years’. However there a number of outstanding tasks to be completed which we endeavour to address in due course. ## In Gratitude We extend our heartfelt thanks to all who serve, give, and contribute to the care and upkeep of our church buildings. Whether through hands-on work, financial gifts, or prayerful support, your contributions ensure these sacred spaces continue to serve both the parish and wider community. We are especially thankful for the generosity of our funders and the dedication of our congregation. It is through your support that our ministry and mission are made possible. _Rev Tracy Marlow (on behalf of Churchwardens)_ 5 ## **Evangelist Report 2024** In many ways this year has been very difficult for me personally. My mum died right at the beginning of the year and my son had a stint in hospital too. Despite it feeling like one thing after another I have experienced such love and comfort. God has felt especially close this year, upholding me and our family, but also we have felt hugely supported by our church family and all in the Parish. Although there has been much personal heartache and pain I can honestly say ‘through it all our eyes are on Him, the author and perfector of our faith.’ We know we are not the first or last to experience bereavement, loss and family turmoil, we know that many in the congregation have experienced much too and yet there is such a sense of being in it together, we are grateful for each of you. I know also that God wastes nothing, and now we get to comfort others with that comfort we have also received. _We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body._ 2 Corinthians 4:8–10 In regard to ministry as I look back over the year it is amazing to see what God has done in our midst. As we have shared our vulnerability and pain with you, Jesus has continued to bless the work of our hands and we stand amazed in His presence! ## Tea and toast At the beginning of the year, we were approached by Tweeddale family hub about hosting a tea and toast session once a week for primary aged kids and parents/carers. This session involves, games and crafts and of course tea and toast. As a result of relationships built some have started to attend other activities such as Art and our popular Christingle service and are starting to explore faith. We have also made good relationships with those who run the activity and were invited to the Tweeddale Christmas event where we shared the Christmas story and joined in the festivities. ## Art for wellbeing This year Art for wellbeing has gone from strength to strength. We have grown in numbers and now have approximately 20 people on the register, but we see on average 15 people each week and 6 new people are joining all the time. The session now consists of a spiritual reflection linked with the theme of the session. What has also grown this year is others leading. We have had three people deliver the creative content and expanded to creative writing and floristry. This is a great inter-generational space where creativity flourishes and those who thought they weren’t creative have experienced healing and joy as they have discovered they can be, and are, creative. We hosted an exhibition in June displaying our work; friends and family attended as we showcased our work and told the ongoing journey of our group. We also published a booklet with our reflections and pictures of our artwork. ## Choir We said goodbye to Andrew Garrido as our choir director this year and we didn’t know what would be next for our St Helier Voices choir. As we waited, God was faithful to provide more of his best with Julie Davis! Choir leaders and accomplished pianists are hard to come by, especially those as gifted and talented as Andrew and Julie. We feel extremely blessed. Julie was born in St Heliers and grew up in Mitcham. She felt led into music and studied voice and piano at Guildhall School of Music. After graduating she has enjoyed a career in music, including singing and accompanying, musical direction and training choirs. She was called to teaching and enjoyed a life sharing the music in schools and communities for over 40 years. Our choir has been officially declared her favourite and under Julie’s guidance the choir has grown. The choir performed at a church thanksgiving evening, sang Christmas carols in the marketplace at Rose Hill and at Christingle. ## Christmas To crown the year, we had a dinner at Bishop Andrewes’ church attended by 40 people who have attended the choir or art over the year. We enjoyed a Christmas dinner served by wonderful volunteers and had a quiz with a fun music round and awards were given. We asked people what impact has belong to choir or art had in 7 your life this year, many said they had made great friendships, it helps them ‘escape from everyday troubles’ and that they ‘always leave feeling lighter’. ## Out and about in St Helier At the St Helier festival this year we took angel wings and an angel wing painting with the slogan ‘not all angels have wings. We asked people about who were the angels in their lives and on the estate. This was slightly different to our normal approach as we didn’t have a stand this year. We joined them again at the Easter event, telling the gospel story using the Resurrection eggs as a prop. Then we joined them at Rose Hill for Christmas too. ## Alpha After café each week we had an Alpha group at Bishop Andrewes’ church. One person decided to get baptised from that group and the group are continuing to meet as a postAlpha discipleship group. _Hayley Humphreys_ ## **Assistant Curate’s Report** It has been another special year of worshipping with the parish of St Helier, in this my final year of curacy. I’ve continued to lead the regular Sunday morning Communion at Bishop Andrewes’ and preach regularly at both churches. I’ve also facilitated a small Bible study group on Wednesdays (during the Coffee Morning). This past year we have spent time exploring connections between the prophesies and promises in the Old Testament and how they are fulfilled in Jesus Christ in the New. It’s been particularly enjoyable to reflect together about how these powerful words speak directly into our lives today, as clearly as they did when they were written. I look forward to seeing what God has planned for us all in the year ahead! _“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path”_ Psalm 119:105 _Revd Helga_ 8 ## **Community Pastor Report (October 2024–December 2024)** It was a privilege to be appointed as the Parish Community Pastoral Worker on October 1st 2024. During the first three months, I spent time joining in with the different initiatives already taking place in the Parish and began to build positive relationships with people in the community. One of the relationships that developed through attending Tea & Toast and Art for Wellbeing, was with a young boy who lives on the St Helier Estate. As a result, I then planned to run a youth alpha with this young boy in January 2025, with another adult volunteer and a few of the young boys’ friends. I also spent time engaging with individuals on the estate at the church café or 1:1 visits in public places such as the local café or hospital. Some of my interactions have been with individuals who live with addiction. I have looked into the potential of running a recovery course at St Peter’s church in the future. In October, I planned and led a Light Party at Bishop Andrewes’ as an alternative to Halloween. I partnered with Revival City to gather 17 volunteers to run the light party. There were games, food, craft, dancing and lots of fun. To conclude the party, children and adults sang songs about Jesus being the light of the World. December was filled with with lots of Christmas celebrations and services. I led an assembly at Tweeddale Primary School sharing the true message of Christmas. I also shared this message when Green Wrythe School visited St Peter’s for their Christmas Production. I joined Hayley in participating with the Christmas event at the Tweeddale Centre where the Christmas story was shared with more families! For our Christingle service, I invited the local scouts group to join in the service by leading the prayers. I also encouraged some of the young boys from the local community to join in with sharing the opening words of the service and the Bible readings. I also led our Christmas Eve Crib Service and All Aged Nativity service where various members of the church community dressed up as I re-told the Christmas story. I am looking forward to continuing the work alongside the team at the St Helier Centre of Mission in strengthening relationships and reaching out to the estate with God’s love. _Luke Marlow_ ## **Safeguarding** The Parochial Church Council (PCC) takes its responsibilities for safeguarding very seriously and is committed to the safeguarding, care and nurture of everyone within our church community. The PCC has complied with the duty under section 5 of the _Safeguarding and Clergy Discipline Measure 2016_ , to have due regard to the House of Bishops’ guidance on safeguarding children and vulnerable adults. ## During the year: The PCC reviewed and adopted the Church of England’s safeguarding policies: _Promoting a Safer Church_ , and the parish safeguarding policy was reviewed and displayed prominently. - A Parish Safeguarding Officer (PSO) has been appointed and their contact details are made available in the church and on our website. - Safeguarding training has been undertaken by clergy, PCC members, and volunteers in accordance with Church of England requirements. - All required DBS checks have been completed or are in process for those in roles involving children or vulnerable adults. - Safeguarding was a standing item on the agenda at PCC meetings.
