Gift Aid was down due to an issue with User Access which has now been rectified. With secured agreements with other Churches using our buildings we have seen an increase of around 50% in our Hall Hire income. This enables the worship of our Heavenly Father by others. One Hall Hirer covering their utility bills which is shown as a reimbursement on our Financial Statement. We received various Grants to fund projects including a new kitchen installed at St Peters Church, allowing us to offer an excellent space for internal and external groups to use our kitchen for cookery courses, baking and shared meals. Grants also received to fund outside groups, which has allowed us to outreach to the local community. One of the grants received allows us to cover the cost for a Community Choir Group. Further funds received from Sports England and the London Borough of Sutton to allow groups at Bishops Andrewes to support the wellbeing of our local residents. ## Expenditure Fuel charges have increased massively by 80%, this resulting in higher bills in 2023. Last year’s running costs for our Church Buildings was an average of £3817.00 per month. We increased our Parish Pledge (Diocesan Quota) by £3000, taking our annual contribution to £18000. The Parish Pledge is a fee that pay the Diocese towards Staffing and fund projects throughout the Diocese. New kitchen installed at St Peters Church with a grant received to cover under half the cost of the work completed. The remaining balance taken from our General Funds Account. We also had unexpected costs of major works to be corrected including a new heating system at Bishop Andrewes Church. Please refer to the financial statement attached for exact details of the church’s income and expenditure in 2023. The financial records were examined and approved by an independent examiner. _Rebecca Farr (Treasurer of St Helier PCC)_ We gratefully received donations to allow us to support others and our works with our children and youth groups. _If you are a taxpayer and have not yet signed up for gift aid and you would like to or would like further information, please see myself._ 2 ## **Churchwardens’ report for 2023** As Churchwardens, we are both grateful to all those who have, in so many ways, generously given of their time and energy to keep our ministries running during 2023. Thank you! Summarised below are the specific developments that we think worthy of mention. ## St Peter’s Peter Harris (Warden) and Trevor Hennessey regularly maintain our church grounds. Trevor has totally transformed the garden area and is in the process of making a reflective space to sit and pray within the garden. In March 2023 we employed a company to mark out parking bays in the church parking area. The cost of this was shared with the Romanian orthodox Church. This has given a lot more clarity to the shared space, however we do still experience problems from time to time with poor parking and people blocking in entrance/exit. We have investigated the practical element and the costing which we will be looking into with the PCC relating to a barrier. In October 2023 we were awarded £5k by Garfield and Weston towards new heaters. These have been supplied and fitted, at present they are working well. A full electrical test and some upgrading in our electrics have also been conducted. In June 2023 we were awarded £4,500 by the Croydon area Bishops mission fund. This helped with costs to refurbish the kitchen. We are delighted that the kitchen is completed and is used regularly by Sutton women’s centre and St Helier Youth club. Fire extinguishers are checked, lightning conductor test were all conducted last year and this year. Annual gas and electrical tests have also been conducted. ## Bishop Andrewes We are delighted that the building is being used regularly. Wednesday café, Zumba, food bank, scouts and Art Classes are weekly term time users of the building (please see Centre of Mission reports from Hayley for more on Art, Zumba, and Café). Revival City Church began (with permission from the Archdeacon) to hold services in Bishops Andrewes from March 2023. Pastor Samuel, his family, and the congregation of C.R.C have been a real blessing to the parish, we look forward to the unity and shared mission of God that is building between us. A new boiler was fitted in August a new boiler was fitted and all gas heaters checked. Annual Fire extinguishers, lightning conductor and electric tests were conducted. It came to our attention that asbestos was present in the stairwell in the cellar. This was removed by a licenced company in December 2023. We employed a cleaning company to clean both churches, but this was not cost effective. Peter Harris has been cleaning both churches. In every thread of the community fabric, the humble hands of volunteers, staff, and PCC weave together the tapestry of love, service, and unity. These resolute individuals are truly the embodiment of God’s love on the Earth. Tirelessly offering their time, talent, finances, and hearts to ensure that the church is not just a building, but a vibrant community of faith. We extend our thanks to all those who have supported the mission of the church with their finance as we have seen an increase in giving and the joy in people to give. _Sydney Coy Peter Harris (Churchwardens)_ 3 ## **Pioneer Evangelist Report** _Café & external partnerships_ This year we have continued to build relationships with local agencies who have attended the café and provided information and signposting to attendees. We’ve had a Health Coach, a family support worker from Tweedale family hub, Sutton Welfare and benefits advice, safer neighbourhoods’ police, Sutton Mental Health services and SACRO too. These relationships are building and developing, and we are starting to see fruit from them as they desire to partner with us in certain activities. The Police neighbourhood meeting took place at Bishop Andrewes’ at the beginning of the year and was attended by local ward Councillors too. Its great to see local people actively engaged in a way they haven’t in the past. The Community Engagements officer has also attended and ensured local projects are highlighted too. ## _Art (new initiative)_ Early in the year Hayley discovered a new passion for art and at a council meeting was put in touch with Anna who runs Intuit Art and Sutton Council sponsored our very own art for wellbeing group at Bishop Andrewes’. People engaged well with this project, and it enabled more creativity to be unlocked and faith to be shared in a natural way. One member started to write poetry again and many who thought they couldn’t paint, or they weren’t creative have been pleasantly surprised. Anna also help lead some art at the Ezer women’s day too. ## _Choir_ This year St Helier Voices celebrated a year of singing together and we celebrated by hosting a concert and invited friends, family & NHS Sutton who had sponsored our choir. The art group exhibited their work in the interval. The church was full, and people described the evening as “Amazing!” and “Uplifting”. Our 4 last song on the evening was called ‘Unwritten’ and as we introduced it, we talked about how we believe God is writing the story in our Parish and invited people to come and join in. The choir also sang at the Inspire choir event, the outdoor music festival and in the Christmas marketplace. ## _Youth_ St Helier Youth continued to grow with Rachel and Jamie (from Horizon) leading. Food and fun are always had on these sessions. We are very grateful to all who have joined the team this year and have loved seeing them grow as the serve Jesus and the young people in this ministry. Rachel continued to build relationships with the schools, regularly leading assemblies. We also hosted one school’s Christmas performance. ## _Zumba_ The Zumba group continues to grow, and many have now made new friends outside of classes. One of the fruits of this is that those who attend Zumba also now come to various events such as our light party and the coronation. ## _Services & other events_ We hosted a light party and lots of people attended, and we finished with a conga line around the cross singing’ this little light of mine!’ It was wonderful! Our Holy week services were very poignant, and we will continue to build on this over the next years as we help people experience Christ’s story. Rev Helga led an Ash Wednesday service, and we hosted a Maundy Thursday service and reflections on the cross on Good Friday. We rounded off this time with a collaborative celebration service with Revival City and Horizon. We celebrated, He is risen indeed! We hosted a community showing of the Coronation this year and we were thrilled that many attended. Some new people attended the coronation and started attending church. Rachel hosted an Alpha course at Bishop Andrewes’ and one person who came via the coronation day attended the Alpha and also got baptised. 5 We had an active presence with our friends at St Helier Music & Community Foundation’s events this year. We were out with them on Holy Saturday event at David Weir centre too with cross and holy crafts. We attended their summer music festival and were at their health & wellbeing event as well as the Christmas market with our portable stable. Each time representing the Church on the streets and having opportunities to pray with people, share the gospel and invite people to join us at our various activities. A YWAM team came from the south of France. They were fully immersed in Parish of St Helier life and supported us in prayer and a worship evening and we were encouraged us as a team. Together with our friends at Revival City church we hosted Remembrance Day service at BA, with the scouts in attendance. St Peter’s service (pictured right) was again unique and acknowledged domestic abuse victims and victims of knife crime. Our Christmas services were a highlight, Christingle was held at BA and attended by Scouts too. The year was crown as we hosted a New Years Eve gathering at St Peters and we worshiped, played games, sang songs and danced our way into the new year. ## _Hayley Humphreys_ 6 ## **2023 Assistant Curate’s Report** Having arrived in 2022 for an initial short training placement, it has been wonderful to put down roots here and be able to join the team longer term. I’m grateful to everyone for making me feel so welcome. Over the past year I have offered regular Holy Communion at 9.15 on Sundays at Bishop Andrewes’ (in a traditional style), followed by joining morning worship at St Peter’s, preaching around once a month and offering a short homily more often at BA. One thing I love about preaching here is the sheer enthusiasm everyone has for God’s Word, and the thoughtful conversations with people afterwards. During the year I also assisted Rachel with an Alpha Course, and have regularly attended the Wednesday coffee morning at Bishop Andrewes’. It was also wonderful to assist with baptisms, to lead a service of blessing for a couple celebrating their marriage of 50 years, and to offer a joint Remembrance service with Pastor Samuel of Revival City Church. I enjoyed the ‘EZER’ women’s day very much: reflecting on how strong the women of the Old Testament really were, and joining in the guided art session, where we created a huge variety of beautiful paintings. Thank you for making me feel so at home here. It is a privilege and a joy to minister with you all. _Revd Helga_ 7 ## **2023 Vicar’s Report** The words of ‘Get ready’ in the vicars’ reports of the past two years are still very much at the forefront of my mind. After every Sunday service at St Peters, the congregation are asked “Are you ready to go out in His name to change the world?” The congregation respond back with zeal ## _“We’re ready!!”_ My heart is warmed when I hear the cry and see His transforming presence in many lives. We ready ourselves to receive His blessings and face the challenges that life brings In His strength. It has been another eventful year of both blessings and challenges. ## At the beginning of 2023, we began a sermon series on 1 Peter. We learned that Peter writes to encourage new Christians who are being persecuted. The letter encouraged us with words of hope, and challenged us with the call to holiness. We continue to pray for our persecuted family around the world at the beginning of every service in the parish. In March, Mark Liburd from Open Doors preached and encouraged us to keep praying for those who are severely persecuted. A visit from Teen Challenge exit foundation on the 12th February inspired many. One of our congregation was able to have a family member supported by the team with life changing results. We thank God for the ministry of Teen Challenge and Open Doors! During the summer and Autumn months our teaching focussed on Old Testament characters. We all learned so much about ourselves, our families and our community. We learned of God’s kindness and blessings through the brokenness of humanity. Helga continued to faithfully lead the community of Bishop Andrewes Sunday congregation and supported Rachel in the running of an Alpha course. On Saturday 1st July, around forty of us attended the powerful outdoor performance ‘The Life of Christ’. This was an amazing day for all of us. Many commented of how much they learned and were inspired to go back and read the life of Christ, recorded in the gospels for themselves! In September, we had around fifty women attend the ‘EZER’ women’s day. Caroline spoke powerfully about women in the bible. Both she and Karen spoke about their life journeys and the transforming power of Christ. Tina sang beautifully words of prayer and blessing over us. In the afternoon, we shared a delicious meal and had an art workshop. 8 Women went away empowered and encouraged. Glory to God! work of transforming the garden, is like a visible sign of Gods transformative working in the parish. God continues to pour out His blessings bringing new life and hope to the people of the St Helier estate. I give also give huge thanks to Trevor’s wife Pauline, who steps in every week to serve! For the Cameron family who are a witness to his glory. I give thanks for every bible reader, pray-er, money counter, tea server, table clearer, sound desk operator, washer upper and to the faithful and generous hearted congregation of Bishop Andrewes and all that ‘come and see’ at St Peter’s! You are so loved! We had the privilege of Baptising nine Adults and two infants in 2023. Four people were confirmed in November at All Saints Carshalton. The Post Alpha group continues to meet, and we hope for more discipleship groups to be formed in the coming year. I give heartfelt thanks to the team and PCC. Our amazing curate Helga, pioneer evangelists Rachel and Hayley, my faithful and faith filled wardens Syd and Peter, our persevering hard working treasurer Rebecca and the good and faithful servants Luke and Caroline Thanks, and praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
