## Section D Achievements and performance

## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

2020 was dominated by the problems caused by the Covid19 pandemic. This substantially restricted activities and changes were made to offer a reduced level of activity.

## **Talks**

There was one face-to-face talk at end of February by Professor Joyce Hill. Subsequent talks were given to members by Zoom – 6 in all. These were recorded and made available to members for a limited period of time on YouTube.

## **Visits**

These were not possible during 2020

## **Outreach** talks

There were two talks given, one at Bilton Historical Society, the other at Skelton Historical Society.

**Guided tours of the English Heritage site** There were none as the site was closed.

## **Education Group**

School visits were not possible during the year. Plans were drawn up for the development of future Outreach Activities.

## **FORA/ EH meetings**

Zoom meetings took place with English Heritage who were updating their museum at the Aldborough site and progress was made to have interpretation panels installed in 2021.

## **Roman Garden Project**

The Trustees agreed to start a Roman Garden Project. A site was agreed and plans have been drawn up based on known Roman garden designs. A sub-committee has been set up. There are plans to link the Garden Project with the Education Project.

## **Cambridge University Roman Town Project**

"Despite the limitations of Covid, the team from the University of Cambridge continued their research activities in 2020 with trial excavation and survey. Geophysical surveys were extended out in the areas to the east and south of Aldborough, revealing further information about the roads, enclosures and areas of industry. Trial trenches were dug by the river to investigate the Roman bridge, which was discovered in geophysical surveys in 2013. Since then, geoarchaeological work has been carried out on the flood plain to better understand the Roman riverine landscape, and broader environmental changes. The trial trenches revealed deep alluvial deposits over the bridge. The area will be further investigated in 2021 using Ground Penetrating Radar. Sadly due to covid, the projects usual work with volunteers was cancelled, but the work did feature on Radio 4's Open Country, on a special programme on 'Archaeology in Lockdown'
