Wildlife in Ascot Annual Report for the Charity Commission For the year 2022
The only activities affected by the Covid pandemic were our indoor plans early in the year such as our pub quiz which we decided not to hold this year.
We had two online talks in January and March. One on rewilding and the other on bats as we had decided to start surveying for them in our area this year.
We continued with our conservation and recording work. This year we maintained the local wildflower beds, recorded trees, monitored our local “kingfisher flyway” pond, carried out conservation work and surveys including live small mammal trapping with our local expert at our local SANG, and a primary school wildlife garden, recorded flowering wildflowers at a local wildlife site and surveyed for bats.
In the winter/spring we planted hawthorn whips and sowed more yellow rattle. In the summer we completed the pond in the woodland at a local wildlife site and in the autumn we made bird nesting and bat roosting boxes from kits some of which were sold but most were kept for the LWS. We also planted bulbs in the grassland and woodland and created some stag beetle loggeries here in the autumn/winter. We continued the work of FreshWater Watch Thames WaterBlitz by taking and analysing samples of water from our local waterways along our green corridors which flow into the River Thames.
We organised two, well attended, walks in and led by our supportive local Crown Estate in Windsor Forest. We also organised a dawn chorus walk at a local golf club; two nightjar walks and an expert led bat walk in a local SSSI.
We celebrated our 10 years of supporting wildlife and the Queen's 70 years Jubilee at Sunninghill and Ascot Parish Platinum Jubilee Party in the Park at Victory Field. We had many people visit our stand for a chat about local wildlife and children enjoyed some quiet time colouring in wildlife pictures.
We had a further 290 copies of our A5 wildlife booklets, written in 2020, printed and have given away and sold around 55 copies over the year. We sold copies from our stand at Silwood Bugs, Birds and Beasts day where we also spoke with local residents about our wildlife and had a range of gardening for wildlife leaflets for people to take. The booklets are also in stock at a local store in Sunninghill village.
