Achievements and Perfonnance Contd....
The RAF Coltishall Heritage Ccntre was formally opened by the Deputy Lord
Lieutenant Group Captain Stuart Blacknian on the 23 June 2021 on the 82.
anniversary of the day that the Station was declared operational in 1940. The event
w&s attended by senior figures from Norfolk and the two district councils covering
the fornier RAF Coltishall site. The event w&$ hosted by our patron Atr Marshal Sir
Christopher Harper. The very SUC￿$sful day culminated in a flyp8St by a Spitfire
and HurricaThe from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight flown by Group Captain
Matt Peterson and Squadron Lead￿ Mark Discombe; both fornier Jaguar pilots
from RAF Coltishall.
On op¢ning, the Heritage Centre proved popular both with fonner Station personnel
and the general public. The layout of the exhibition rooms in a 'tim¢lin¢" manner
made th¢ story logical for the guides to tell. Furthemiore. the uncluttercd nature of
the displa)s proved ￿}pullar and was often remarked on as being vcry profcssionaI.
Several group visits were organised which ranged from a Solicitors finn from
Yorkshire, car enthusiast clubs. th¢ Royal British Le￿On and a local Rotary Club. tn
addition, the Centr¢ opened especially for the annual reunion for those who served
on the Jaguar Forc& All these group visits wcre highly successful and have
generated positive word of mouth and social media reviews which is generatin8
more interest in group visits for the coming se&son.
Our unique reconnai&sance displays were further enhanced during the year with new
exhibits being installed in our set of reconnaissance cabins. These cabins wer¢ used
to support deployed opcrations of the Jaguar in the reconnaissance role. Visitors
were able to see the development of aerial photo￿aphY from wet film to digital
operations. Complementing the cabins, our set of aircraft reconnaissance pods
added to the interesl. A visit from the RAF Medmenham Reconnaissance History
Group to view our displays w&s vy successful and as specialists in this field, they
were extremely impre&8ed and will continue the co.operation we have enjoyed from
By the time the Centre closed for the Wint¢r after a relatively short season, more
than 1,000 visitors had been through the doors. Donations (both from the visitor's
box and other direct donalions) had rcachal in excess of £3,000 ensuring that the
Heritage Centre was fmancially viable and a realistic visitor venue in terms of
coverin8 the costs involved. The Centre w&s awardcd '£ovid Safety Compliant"
status by Vislt England which gave visitors and staff confidence that proper
measures were in place for their safdy.

During the closed season a plan to expand the exhil)ition areas to cr¢ate a more
logical timeline for visitors was implemented and a fiuthw large room was
refurbished by r¢placing light fittings, Inst￿ling el¢ctrical and audiojvisual
uipment and rede￿rating. The majority of this work was done by the end of the
reporting yw and will be fillly complctc by the end of February. The Centre
reop¢ns on 3 March 2022.
Summary
This h&8 been a very successful first and part year of operations and bodes extremely
well for the future. A strong and enthusiastic team of trustees and voluntccrs

sees the Heritagc Centre achieving our aim of being a worthwhile tribute to RAF
Coltishall and an education￿ assd for the county of Norfolk. This combined with
superb Lecture Room facilities and scope to expand fi]rther, will ensure thai the
Centre is worth visitin8 and indeed revisiting the collection display grows.
