Created In 2011 in re5pon5e to the cuts in publlc spendln8 Theatre Uncut galvan15es actlon, ra15e5 awareness and
fuels debate by creating politlca5 new wrStln£ and making It avallable for everyone, everywhere.
Each year the company work wlth both the worfd's leadlng wrlters and extraordlnary new volces to create
trailblailng work that examines the world we live in today and make thls avallable for anyone to perform
anywhere. So far they have commlssloned over 57 playwrights from 14 countrles to create responslve work whlch
has been performed In 32 countries across 4 contlnents.
Theatre Uncut have produced work at the Young Vlc, Traverse Theatre and the Southwark Playhouse and have
toured across the UK. They have created work in collaboration with DOT Tiyatro in 15tanbul, Turkey and Teater
GR08 In Copenhagen Denmark and performed on Theater Row In New York Clty supported by the Carol Tambor
Foundatlon. The cornpany has won two Frinse First Awards, the Herald Angel Award and the Spirit of the
Fringe. After every performance they hold a post-show dlscu5sion. 211owlng the audlence to add thelr own volces
to the debate.
The Theatre Uncut Polltlcal Playwriting Award was created in partnershlp with the Young Vic En8land, Traverse
Theatre Scotland, Sherrnan Theatre Wales and Lyric Theatre Northern Ireland, to discover the political playwrights
of the future. Over 1.000 playwri8hts have submitted their work to the award to be read by our selectlon of over
50 expert freelance readers. then judged by our panel of leaders in Britlsh Theatre. The winner of the inaugural
prize will be co-produced with the Royal Court Theatre.

Theatre Uncut was established by Hannah Price who was concerned about the effect the cut5 in public spending
were 8oln8 to have on the most vulnerable In UK society. Wlth the help of Mark Ravenhill and David Greig, she
brought together 8 of the UK'S most dynamic playwrights to create short plays In response to the cuts.. Clara
Brennan, David Gre1& Dennis Kelly, Lu¢¥ KSrkwood, Laura Lomas, Anders Lu5t8arten, lack Thorne and Mark
Ravenhlll.
Over 90 groups acro￿ the world took these plays and made them thelr own, performlng across the UK and
abToad. The week after the event flnlshed hundreds of Theatre Uncutters took part in demonstratlons and
marched on Whltehall In protest against the Cuts.
Emma C?Ilanderlolned Theatre Uncut as a partlclpant In 2011, dlrectln8 the ori8inal plays at the Brlstol Old Vl¢ and
the Arches in Glasgow. In 2012 she lolned the company as Co.Artistlc Olrector and in 2021 became Artlstlc Olrector
when Hannah left the company to lead the Klngs Head Theatre in London wlth Mark Ravenhlll.
Theatre Uncut dellvered the followln8 actlvity between March 2021- 2022.
The flnanclal year be8an with announclng the wlnner of the Theatre Uncut PolltScal PlaywrltSng Award 2021
Chaslng Hares by Sonali Bhattacharyya. The announcement Wa5 made through a blnaural sound experience where
the publ1¢ could hear extracts of 4 of the shortlbsted plays and speeches from the Artlstlc Dlrectors of the 4 partner
venues, the Young Vlc, the Traverse Theatre, the Sherman Theatre and the Lyrlc Belfast. Thls was the flrst award
ceremony of Its klnd and over 6,000 Ilsteners tuned In to Ilsten.
The award employed over 50 freelancers during th15 challenging tlme and supported over 500 emerglng polltlcal
playwrlghts, We are delighted to be developing three of the shortlisted plays In 2022 and the wlnning play Chaslng
Hares by 5onall Bhattacharyya alon85ide the Bertha Foundallon wlth the Youn8 Vic for a main house production In
2022.
May 2021 saw the very flrst full scale Theatre Uncut production, The Merthyr Stlgmat15t by Lisa Parry. one of the
short115ted play5 from the inaugural Theatre Uncut Polltical Playwritin8 Award was presented In co-productlon
with the Sherman Theatre Cardiff. The diBltal capture production recelved an overwhelmingly positSve response
from both audlences and the pre5S "theatrlcal magic from the Volleys" the Guardian. The play explores the
experience of a teenage glrl from one of Wale5' most deprlved comrnunitie5 and we were delighted to cast a
young actress from Merthyr In her professional stage debut.
WÈ were also deli8hted that our co-production of two Pale5tlnian5 go dogging by Saml Ibfahlm at the Royal Court
whlch had to be p05tpontd due io Covid was repro6rammed for June 2022.
We began development on Playfight by Julia Grogan Ishortllsted for the 2021 awardl with two days of readlnB led
by Artistic Director Emma Callander.
A successful bid for Arts Council Culture Recovery Fund WI51 go towards strengthening the financial sustainability of
the company including the creation of Books Uncut, a new project focusing on pub51shlng the Theatre Uncut
archive of short plays online and toward5 developing the companrfs educational offer.

company beln8 wound up members are required to conlribute an amount not exceeding £10.
Appolntment OA Trustees
The dlreclors of the company are also ¢harlty trustees for the purposes of chorlty law. Under the requlrements of
the Article5 of Assoclatlon, Trustees sholl be appointed by resolution of the Trustees. Every Trustee will hold ofncÈ
