The trustees present their report together with the financial statements for the period ended 31 August 2022:

## **Constitution and Objectives**

Young Scientists for Africa (YoSA) is a charitable incorporated organisation registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales for the public benefit to promote the education of young people in Africa in the subject of science by:

- Awarding to such persons scholarships to attend the annual London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF)

- Supporting the development of student science communities in Africa

YoSA operates under a constitution dated 10[th] January 2018.

## **Activities and Achievements**

YoSA operates across Africa with an initial focus on sub-Saharan Africa and delivers its objectives by working with facilitators in relevant countries to support the identification of scholarship students.

The 63rd London International Youth Science Forum took place between 28th July and 10th August 2022. The opening ceremony was attended by Royal Patron HRH The Princess Royal and the keynote address was delivered by Nobel Prize Winner Professor James Rothman.

We offered nine scholarships for African students to attend the Forum in person. Of these Olive attended from Kenya, Zwivhuya and Rokunda attended from South Africa and Innocent attended from Tanzania. Rokunda had this to say about his experience at this year’s Forum: “ _I enjoyed every moment of it, made a lot of connections in the fraternity, great friends from different parts of the world and reminded myself of the potential I know I have. I met very influential students, lecturers, professors, and practitioners who opened my eyes to the world of science on a very personal level_ ”.

There were widespread visa issues due to a combination of Covid related staff issues, applications from Ukraine and the coincidence of the Commonwealth Games being held in the UK on the same dates as the Forum. This resulted in Marina and Stephen from Kenya, Sharifa from Tanzania and Tinovimbanashe and Yolanda from Zimbabwe being unable to travel to London, but they did attend the Forum virtually through the online platform.
