The trustees present their report together with the financial statements for the period ended 31 August 2021:
Constitution and Objectives
Young Scientists for Africa (YoSA) is a charitable incorporated organisation registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales for the public benefit to promote the education of young people in Africa in the subject of science by:
-
Awarding to such persons scholarships to attend the annual London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF)
-
Supporting the development of student science communities in Africa
YoSA operates under a constitution dated 10[th] January 2018.
Activities and Achievements
YoSA operates across Africa with an initial focus on sub-Saharan Africa and delivers its objectives by working with facilitators in relevant countries to support the identification of scholarship students.
We report here the tragic passing of our co-founder and trustee Tim Rooke who died in February 2021. We have spent time this year regrouping the charity following the loss of Tim’s input including appointing new signatories on the financial accounts.
The 62nd London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) took place in July 2021 and ran as a hybrid event with the majority of students joining online. The event was attended by Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal in her new role as Patron. Students engaged with world class scientists from a number of disciplines including Professor Sarah Gilbert who led the Oxford University vaccine development team, former President of the Royal Society Professor Lord Martin Rees and celebrated space scientist Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock MBE.
The pandemic prevented students from the Sub-Saharan region travelling to London to attend the Forum but we were pleased to support the online attendance of scholarship awardee Marina Janji from Kenya. Online registration for Marina was free of charge. As well as engaging with the lectures and online visits, Marina had the opportunity to interact with students from all over the world.
We have continued to consolidate our relationships and engagement with African partners in South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Kenya to ensure

Independent Examiners Report
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
-
examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act,
-
to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity
-
Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act, and
-
to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
-
which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the requirements:
-
to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; and
-
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with
-
the accounting requirements of the Charities Act have not been met; or
-
to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
