Bengali Language Class

After the summer holidays of 2024, we decided to temporarily pause our Bengali school classes in response to the many external factors that affected our students, particularly their exams and academic commitments. Starting on the 10th of January 2025, the classes will be held every Friday from 5 PM to 7 PM, making them more accessible to everyone. with them now being held at St John Fisher in Rochester. If needed, we have the capacity to accommodate students through remote teaching sessions for those who are unable to attend in-person lessons; these would occur according to the attendee’s convenience. From the new year, a teacher fluent in both Bengali and English will be joining the team as a profession in her trade.

Events

On occasion, SKC runs community events inviting students from these Bengali Language Classes to join them and present a performance. These can include…

• Cooking Workshops: Community members came together to share and taste dishes prepared by one another, fostering connection and culinary exploration.

• Weekly Sewing Classes: Running from February 5 for six weeks, these classes took place before Ramadan and were well-received by participants.

• Year-Round Exercise Classes: Our exercise classes began in February and will continue throughout the year, with a break during Ramadan.

• Eid al-Fitr Celebration: We hosted a festive party on April 27 from 4 PM to 8 PM, featuring food, games, and community bonding.

• Pita Mela & Mehndi Event: The event included a clothing shop, traditional mehndi application, and an Islamic song performance by Habib, alongside delicious street food like samosas and biryani.

• Eid al-Adha Party: Our celebration on July 7 from 5 PM to 8 PM was a "bring your own dish" event, featuring clothing stalls, food, and henna services.

• Wellbeing Sessions: Communication sessions discussing thoughts and emotions and managing our mind and body.

• End of 2024 Get-Together Party: On the 22nd of December, we arranged an event with many guests attending as well as others hosting talks and seminars, such as the Kent and Medway Fire and Rescue Authority and the Institute of Physics. Some guests spoke about the spread of language worldwide and how Bengali developed, others spoke about physical and mental health maintenance.

Outings

Compared to the last few years, there have been significantly less outings due to train service strikes and last minute bad weather. However, we managed to arrange a few get-togethers and meet-ups at restaurants, parks etc.

• Jacksons Park Meetup: On May 27, we organised a community gathering at Jacksons Park from 12 PM to 4 PM, encouraging social interaction and outdoor fun.

• Dinner at Curry Chemistry Café: A social dinner was held on September 20 at 6 PM, providing an opportunity for community members to connect over a shared meal.

• Chalet Holiday: During the October half-term, we booked two chalets at Romney Sands Holiday Park from October 25-27, accommodating 16 participants for a fun-filled getaway.

Medway Diversity Forum

From October, Momotaz Bibi has been appointed as the Director for the MDF Board of Directors in 2024, a role previously held by other members of our community, including Ms. Ruhena Ruji and Tahmina Rahman. SKC members have been engaging with various activities associated with MDF.

Sports and Fitness

We have continued to deliver swimming sessions weekly which allows for our women to exercise regularly without too much strain. In February, we conducted refreshers for our swimming lifeguards to ensure safety standards remain high.

Additionally, we are partaking in a gentle exercise class for women every week where we practise improving balance and mobility.

Charity Fundraising

A portion of our members commit to regular charity work to help the people who need it most. Shishu Kishor Club has been aiding such people with their work to further popularise the problems people are facing every day.

Firstly, members of SKC are still collecting unused food items from commercial chains such as Tesco and Co-Op - which would normally go to waste - delivering them to the homeless and the needy.

• Broad range of activities for all women in South Asian Communities, disabled families, and other disadvantaged groups.

• Looking to plan a big trip for all members to access and enjoy themselves in the holidays with their families.

• We are looking to change our venue to accommodate our Chatham students, looking at Saint John Fisher, Balfour, St. Michael’s etc. - COMPLETE

• We will begin to offer cooking sessions more often throughout the coming years - COMPLETE

• One of our members will be running a sewing class; we already have a great list of ladies wanting to attend these sessions - COMPLETE

• Planning on starting an exercise / Zumba class of our own in Parish Church Hall - we have been communicating with our members and the hall management team to pick a perfect time and day for these sessions - COMPLETE

• We will be beginning to renew the Swimming Lifeguard Training for our lifeguards in February 2024. - COMPLETE

• We hope to continue our library meetings every month, and our normal scheduled monthly meetings.
