**Shishu Kishor Club** ## **- Annual Report 2022 2023** _**Photographic Evidence for some of the fixtures outlined in this document are present at the end of the main body, please see this for verification.**_ ## **Bengali Language Class** In continuation with our last report, our Bengali Language Classes have been continuing weekly (every Thursday) at Parish Church Hall, Rochester. We are currently browsing other venue options to hold these classes - some place more local to accommodate our students, who mainly live in Chatham. Despite the lift on Covid-19 restrictions, we are continuing to supply remote teaching sessions via Zoom for those who cannot attend face-to-face lessons - these occur every Saturday at a more convenient time. ## **Events** On occasion, SKC runs community events inviting students from these Bengali Language Classes to join them and present a performance. These can include… - Eid Party - Many stalls were set up with a range of goods such as canvases, henna, traditional garments and even forms of street food and desserts to accommodate the younger generation. - Talent Show - A competition was set up between the students with prizes for them to win such as trophies, stickers and novelty gift items; food was served on the side. - Pita Mela - Ranges of sweet and savoury pastries were baked and brought in by contestants (members of the community) and rated based on their taste - the winner got a prize. There were many special guests from Medway Diversity Forum, Pakistani communities and many others. A special service was run by another guest, Momotaz Bibi, who checked blood pressures for the community. - Cooking Workshops - We have held many healthy recipe cooking sessions over the last few years. Notably, we have had some held at Parish Church Hall and some have been held at Mrs. Chowdhury’s house. ## **Outings** Compared to the last few years, there have been significantly less outings due to train service strikes and lastminute severe weather. However, we managed to arrange a few get-togethers and meet-ups at restaurants, parks etc. - Jackson’s Park - Arranged a meet-up where we brought our own dishes and enjoyed ourselves with some singing and dancing, exchanging gifts with the many attendees and guests. - Rochester Esplanade Gardens - We brought a lot of food and gifts for each other to have a nice picnic outing on the grass. We finished by visiting one of our members’ houses for some tea or coffee. - Sizzling Lounge - During a get-together outing with our members, we brought some of our family friends and relatives to enjoy a nice meal in Gillingham, spending some quality time together. - Aden Lounge Restaurant - Some of our active members got together for a pre-Christmas meal in Chatham High Street, where we met a few people from another Ethnic group who were interested in becoming members of our community. Shishu Kishor Club | Registered Charity No. 1176496 | Registered office: 6 Milton Road, Gillingham, ME7 5LN| Email: shishukishorclub@gmail.com | 07502284454 ## **Shishu Kishor Club** - Boat Trips - A limited number of our members were given the opportunity to attend two boat trips during the year, one in the Chatham Dockyard and the other in Rochester, along the river Medway. ## **Medway Diversity Forum** Ms. Ruhena Ruji was appointed as the new Director for the MDF Board of Directors in 2023 - a role previously held by another member of our community, Tahmina Rahman. SKC members have been engaging with various activities associated with MDF. ## **Sports and Fitness** A group of ladies from our community began a Healthy Way Lifestyle Course with the Medway Diversity Forum in December 2022; Mrs. Nilufar Chowdhury will be continuing this in April 2024 as a facilitator. We have continued to deliver swimming sessions weekly which allows for our women to exercise regularly without too much strain. We provide qualified lifeguards to fit our roles that have completed a training course, this will further be renewed this coming year. Additionally, we are partaking in a gentle exercise class for women every week where we practise improving balance and mobility. We will continue to offer such classes to our ladies when more become available in the coming future. ## **Charity Fundraising** A portion of our members commit to regular charity work to help the people who need it most. Shishu Kishor Club has been aiding such people with their work to further popularise the problems people are facing every day. Firstly, we saw ourselves collecting unused food items from commercial chains such as Tesco and Co-Op - which would normally go to waste - and deliver it to the homeless and the needy. Secondly, we - as a community - visited an event that was raising money for the genocide which is currently taking place in Gaza. These events held stalls selling cakes, canvases and decorations with all revenue being donated to the people of Palestine. Some of our members even took time out of their lives to visit the needy in other countries, such as Turkey, to provide aid and supplies to them **.** ## **Future Plans** - Bengali Language Class will continue to promote our cultural activities, singing, recitation, role play etc. This will increase children’s abilities and make them more confident. - Broad range of activities for all women in South Asian Communities, disabled families, and other disadvantaged groups. - SKC hopes to organise a future award ceremony to celebrate the achievements of the youth within the community. - Planning for an event + day trip for the whole community in May and early June in combination with the leftover funds from this year to make the event even bigger and grander. Shishu Kishor Club | Registered Charity No. 1176496 | Registered office: 6 Milton Road, Gillingham, ME7 5LN| Email: shishukishorclub@gmail.com | 07502284454 **Shishu Kishor Club** - We are looking to change our venue to accommodate our Chatham students, looking at Saint John Fisher, Balfour, St. Michael’s etc. - We will begin to offer cooking sessions more often throughout the coming years. - From 2024, one of our members will be running a sewing class; we already have a great list of ladies wanting to attend these sessions. - We have already started arranging sessions in the Adult Education Centre to aid some of our ladies with basic computer and other device skills. - Planning on starting an exercise / Zumba class of our own in Parish Church Hall - we have been communicating with our members and the hall management team to pick a perfect time and day for these sessions. - We will be beginning to renew the Swimming Lifeguard Training for our lifeguards in February 2024. - During the year, we are looking for some of our members to commit to a Healthy Lifestyle Course as well as courses on Parenting etiquette. - - We hope to continue our library meetings every month, and our normal scheduled monthly meetings.
