Annual Report 2021
Bengali Language Class
Continued working with St. John Fisher Catholic School, Chatham. The Deputy Head Mrs D Barnett has agreed to accommodate a large room for our Mother Tongue Class. We have returned to normal pre Covid-19 after having to move to remote teaching via zoom following government guidelines.
Learning & Development
We are working with The National Resource Centre for Supplementary Education (NRCSE). Which is a national strategic and support organisation for community-led supplementary schools. To develop SKC we are currently working towards the quality mark certificate 2021.
SKC’s members have attended the following training:

Remote teaching and digital skills on February 2021 organized by NRCSE

Good management course (7 sessions), commenced on 16[th] March 2021 organised by NRCSE

Covid-19 safe re-opening of supplementary schools on 24[th] March 2021 organised by NRCSE
Mental Health
During the covid-19 pandemic we have been keeping in touch with families in the community especially the vulnerable and disabled families. It serves as great opportunity to meet and catch up with fellow members to do welfare check during difficult times.
Recent events
- January 2020 New year dinner party: New year community event
February 2020 – Pita Mela: Prizes were handed out in a cooking competition for the best ‘pitas’(traditional foods)
February 2020 - Bengali class children’s party: End of term fundraising party, with quizzes and competitions.
February 2020 - Boishakh Boi Mela: Bangla new year party
February 2021 - Bengali School celebrated Ekushey February (internatonal mother tongue language day): Teachers and students engaged in activities and events via zoom prizes were given out for competitions
– April 2021 Cooking session: Sharing of recipes via zoom and healthy cooking sessions will take place after lockdown is lifted.

Medway Diversity Forum
Farzana Chowdhury was appointed as Director for the MDF Board of Directors in December 2020. Farzana has been actively involved with the women’s network which is a valuable project run by MDF. SKC members have been engaging with various activities associated with MDF.
Sports and fitness
Zumba, badminton and swimming have continued for the women and children in Medway on a weekly basis to encourage a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately due to covid-19 some of the activities were discontinued, however we were able to accommodate Zumba via zoom.
Future Plans

Bengali Mother Tongue class will continue to promote our cultural activities, singing, reciting, role play etc. This will increase children’s abilities and make them more confident.

Future examination for a few students to carry out GCSE exam in Bangla.

Broad range of activities for socially excluded women in South Asian Community, disabled families, and other disadvantage groups.

Working with families for lifestyle changes such as eat less meat, recycling, growing your own produce, donate used items and use reusable alternative.

Training opportunity, digital skills and resources need to continue to improve practice for staff and their professional development

Effective education programme to include SEN children in Bengali school.

SKC hope to organise future award Ceremony to celebrate the achievements of the youth within the community.

Parental engagement to be developed for supplementary school.
