Public Benefit / Impact
Moving Memory produces performances, workshops and training, offers guidance to others and contributes to research so that people across the country perceive ageing differently. Our experience as older people, and the techniques we have developed, resonate with, and have proved valuable to other marginalised communities.
The work the company produces – and the way it is produced – shows that getting older can be liberating and life enhancing. Through working intergenerationally, Moving Memory demonstrates the richness, value and importance of older people’s lives and their contributions to local communities. The company’s unique Moving Well collaborative practice engages people of all ages and backgrounds with the creative process and is designed to enable participants to work together to tell the stories they want to tell, express their individual identity, and have a voice in wider society.
The Trustees remain satisfied that Moving Memory Dance Theatre Company delivers a clear public benefit through the work it does to challenge ageism, and to bring health and well-being benefits to participants.
The company undertakes a range of ongoing monitoring and evaluation activities which help to measure how well it is succeeding in achieving its aims, how it can improve and how it can increase its impact.

Report of the Trustees
For the Year Ended 30th June 2023
2022/23 Activities
Organisational Development
2022-23 was Year 1 of our Strategic Business Plan 2022-25. Significant achievements of the year, in line with our Action Plan, were the successful completion of the DamnIt!DanceIt! Healthy Ageing Challenge, the subsequent establishment of a new strand of community engagement, Groovin’ Well , and the convening of a national Arts, Health & Ageism Roundtable. We also embarked upon research and development for a new theatre show drawing upon the lived experience of our core performance company of older women aged between 54 to 94.
We were able to meet our strategic objectives of reaching more people through performance and involving more people through workshops. In order to support the expansion of our work, from April 2023 we increased the Creative Director to four days per week and employed a new part-time Administration Manager with the support of The Considered Ask. We were also able to offer continued freelance work to our four newly trained Creative Facilitators on expanded DamnIt!DanceIt! and new Groovin’ Well programmes.
As part of our commitment to the continuing professional development of the Moving Memory team and trustees, we were able to provide the company with training in Evaluation supported by The Big Ask, and in Safeguarding supported by Social Enterprise Kent during 2022-23.
Marketing & Audience Development
Additional support from The Considered Ask enabled us to continue to work with Flying Geese Arts Marketing & Development Consultancy to undertake a Stakeholder Survey and strengthen marketing around key projects drawing on evaluation material designed in collaboration with the company. The focus of the consultancy was to demonstrate our value to potential commissioners including venues, public health and local authorities. This resulted in an impressive database of cross-sector contacts as well as increased presence on social media and a Promoter’s Pack designed to meet the strategic objective of breaking into new stakeholder markets. The Promoter’s Pack was distributed widely and is available to download from the Moving Memory website New Promoters Pack! - Moving Memory Dance Company
Arts, Health and Ageism Roundtable
In April, with the support of Flying Geese, Moving Memory facilitated the first national Arts, Health & Ageism Round Table – an open invitation to charities, practitioners and organisations working in, or connected to the arts, health and ageism sectors to discuss the impact that ageism plays in arts and health .
The Round Table took place online with 73 individuals signed up to take part, 5 panel member presentations, and smaller break-out sessions led by members of the Moving Memory team.
The discussion was chaired by Professor Roy Sandbach, Professor of Population Health at Newcastle University. Panel members were Sian Stevenson , Creative Director of Moving Memory Dance Company; Veronica Franklin Gould , President of Arts4Dementia; Arti Prashar , Co-Chair of Creative Ageing Development Agency, and Claire Shelton , Director of Well-being at Social Enterprise Kent.
The Round Table asked us to consider:

“Thank you Moving Memory – what an incredible group of people gathered around this hot topic and such a rich conversation!”
DamnIt!DanceIt!
DamnIt!DanceIt! was Moving Memory’s response to the SBRI[1] Healthy Ageing Challenge funded by UKRI[2] to test the viability of placing creative movement workshops, for and by older people, in shopping centres. The aim was to find a replicable model of activity which responds to the need to sustain physical activity in older people and support their social connections. The project also addressed the wider pernicious effect of ageism by providing public performances which demonstrate the positive capabilities of older people and encourage audiences to reassess what it means to be older.
DamnIt!DanceIt! was launched in Spring 2022 and continued into its second phase in Autumn 2022. There were returners from the previous workshops as well as new people at both the Pentagon Shopping Centre in Chatham and The Royal Victoria Place Shopping Centre in Tunbridge Wells. The groups ‘gelled’ and grew in confidence during phase 2 and the project exceeded our expectations -as captured in a video made by Moving Memory Associate Artist, Bob Karper https://vimeo.com/767224454.
An unexpected outcome of the project was that the Tunbridge Wells group presented their choreography as part of the THRIVE contemporary dance showcase at Trinity Theatre, and the two groups came together to perform as part of The Wave at Electric Medway Festival in Chatham.
Collecting data for research and evaluation has been a very important part of the project, involving our Creative Facilitation Team in training for undertaking structured observation led by Flying Geese. The findings of the evaluation are published in the full report produced in collaboration with Mandy Barnett Associates and available to download from our website

We are now able to demonstrate that DamnIt!DanceIt! is helping to increase levels of physical activity in older people, improve wellbeing, and challenge age-related stereotypes. A Case Study document produced by UKRI is available to download from the website UKRI case study - Damn It! Dance It! - Moving Memory Dance Company
Building upon the success of The Healthy Ageing Challenge, we began to explore the potential of engaging older people in other public settings, in particular libraries, in Gravesend and Southborough. As well as providing follow-on opportunities for DamnIt!DanceIt! participants, these Groovin’ Well sessions, funded by Active Kent/Kent Sport Together through their Tackling Inequalities fund, have attracted diverse groups of attenders from under-resourced communities.
“I arrive in one space and leave in a much more uplifted one.” Workshop participant
“It was a pleasure having you all in the library, we look forward to having you back. Customers that I had spoken to were enjoying the sessions and they liked the location and group dynamics, the customer that joined on the last session told me that she was sad that she hadn’t joined in before, it was so much fun. So positive feedback from everyone, which is such a great thing.” Librarian
The work is captured in a film made by Active Kent at Gravesend Library in June this year and downloadable from our website Active Kent & Medway films - Moving Memory Dance Company
Groovin’ Well
To capitalise upon the success of DamnIt!DanceIt! we expanded our Moving Well offer and established a new community engagement project called Groovin’ Well . Hosted by community venues and partners, Groovin’ Well workshops bring people together to loosen up, let go and have a laugh. As with all our projects, the sessions are led by and for older people. Sessions build from simple getting-to-know-you activities through to making group choreography for presentation in local public spaces.

Groovin’ Well launched at The Horsebridge, Whitstable in Spring 2023, funded by Canterbury City Council and continued with funding from National Lottery Awards For All. An additional Groovin’ Well ’ project subsequently became established at Southborough Civic Centre funded by Kent Sport Together and other groups are in the offing. Feedback on the impact of the workshops from participants includes :
“Getting to know the others & ability to work out very rusty “muscles” - both physical & creative.”
“exceptional support & encouragement throughout - made to feel a valued member of the group.”
“We each worked to our own strengths & one of you will say adapt if you can't do something. Look at how your body wants to move & how it can stretch.”
The Devil’s Doorbell
Following a commission by 1 Degree East to present ideas for a new show at South by South East Festival 2022 at The Gulbenkian Arts Centre, we were successful in securing Arts Council England funding to R&D our first indoor theatre show since March 2020. The Devil’s Doorbell is a passionate response to the pervasive misogyny written through women’s lives and gives a voice to women of all ages to demand change. The core performance company went into Research & Development in December resulting in presentations of workin-progress at Trinity Theatre, Tunbridge Wells and The Horsebridge, Whitstable in early 2023. The performers drew on their own and other women’s experiences and feedback from audiences and venues was engaged and positive:
“Not at all what I was expecting – very powerful - & exciting piece of theatre.”
“A well done complex grey area, looking at shame, really powerful.”
“Life-affirming, transgressive, moving.”
“Inspiring, powerful, strong message.”

Governance & Personnel
The Trustees are committed to fulfilling the expectations and legal responsibilities required by the Charity Commission and have been diligent throughout the year in considering and implementing appropriate policies and working practices.
Risks
The charity does not have any long-term commitments that pose significant financial risk, our low overheads and flexibility mean we are able to be resilient and dynamic.
The Trustees work with the Development Director to monitor individual projects against budgets and review all financial matters, identifying any financial risk, at quarterly board meetings. The Trustees seek to develop multiple income streams and deliver on the fundraising strategy.
The Trustees are committed to ensuring good governance across the whole organisation to ensure that all areas of potential risk are regularly reviewed, and mitigation strategies are in place. Policies on Health and Safety, Privacy, Safeguarding, and Diversity & Inclusion are in place to mitigate risks in these areas, and are regularly reviewed. The Trustees recognise the importance of strong administrative and governance systems in successfully delivering the most effective public benefit of the charity and that commitment has a financial cost.
Note on reserves
The charity remains largely project-funded. We continue to fundraise to grow unrestricted and core funds and aim to develop a stable foundation from which we can grow the charity’s work. Our three year strategic plan sets income generation targets. In the long-term we will be seeking to accrue reserves sufficient to cover six months’ activity.

Independent Examiner’s report to the Trustees For the Year Ended 30th June 2023
I report to the charity Trustees on my examination of the accounts of the charity for the year ended 30 June 2023.
This report is made solely to the charity’s Trustees, as a body, in accordance with Part 4 of the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008. My work has been undertaken so that I might state to the charity’s Trustees those matters I am required to state to them in an Independent Examiner’s Report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, I do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the charity and the charity’s Trustees as a body, for my work or for this report.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the Trustees of the charity (and its directors for the purposes of company law) you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 (‘the 2006 Act’).
Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the charity are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the 2011 Act’). In carrying out my examination I have followed the directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.
Independent Examiner's statement
I have completed my examination. I can confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe:
-
Accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 386 of the 2006 Act; or 2. The accounts do not accord with those records; or
-
The accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or
-
The accounts have been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities (applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)).
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
