## **Ainon Baptist Church Trustee Annual Report** ## **2022/2023** **Registered Charity:** 1176466 ## **For the Year Ended September 2023** The trustees present their report for the year ending 30[th] September 2023. ## **1. Objectives and Activities** The overall objective of the charity is to promote the advancement of the Christian faith according to the principles of the Baptist denomination primarily through the North Cardiff area. Ainon Baptist Church is committed to: - Regular public worship, prayer, bible study, preaching and teaching - Baptism, as defined in the Baptist Unions Declaration of Principle - The communion of the Lord’s Supper which shall normally be observed at least once a month - Evangelism and mission, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally - The teaching, encouragement, welcome and inclusion of young people - Nurture and growth of Christian disciples - Education and training for Christian and Community Service - Giving and encouraging pastoral care - Supporting and encouraging charitable social action in the UK and abroad - Encouraging relationships with and supporting Baptist and other Christians - Providing an environment where individuals can grow and mature in their relationship with God and respond to His ‘call’ on their lives. ## **2. Achievements and Performance** ## **Ton’s Tots** Each week during school term time we host a toddler group. Numbers attending are encouraging and we average around 12 parents/grandparents/carers and 15 children each week, but we always have room for more! There is a real community spirit and friendship within the group and it is lovely to see so many benefitting from this regular gathering and the support it provides. 2 Ainon Baptist Church Trustees Annual Report October 2022 to September 2023 ## **Foodbank** The Foodbank Distribution Centre was open every Wednesday afternoon this year. We continue to both collect and distribute food to those who need it and it is a privilege to be a part of helping individuals and families feed themselves. Each session takes a team of 5 volunteers to run from a total team of 18 volunteers who take turns on a rota basis. This year we provided food for over 320 people in need. ## **Ainon Lunch Club** Our regular fortnightly lunch club for the elderly has averaged about 17 people. It is a very welcoming and friendly atmosphere which has made a real impact on the lives of those who eagerly look forward to the lovely food and social interaction. Our team of volunteers work so hard to make this a special time for those who are lonely and isolated. ## **Renew Wellbeing** The Renew Wellbeing session has been a resounding success. It is open to all and we have various activities set up that people can choose to do or not do, and there’s always a friendly welcome and a listening ear if one is needed. Half way through the session there is a time for prayer meditation which takes part in a side room and God has been so faithful and brought the right words to say each week. He has used the sessions to really speak into people and their situations. We average about 20 people each week and a number of people have commented that it is the highlight of their week. ## **Cuppa with a Copper** The South Wales Police continue to use our building for their community engagement programme called ‘cuppa with a copper’. This year, the programme moved from the last Thursday of each month to a regular fortnightly drop in within Wednesday’s Renew Wellbeing session. It is great to see the local police take part in the wellbeing activities and make themselves available to help, support and build bridges and connections with our community. 3 Ainon Baptist Church Trustees Annual Report October 2022 to September 2023 ## **Youth Club** With over 50 young people on our books, the success of our Friday evening Youth Club is evident. We continued to operate a split evening where school years 5 and 6 attended between 6:30pm – 8:00pm and years 7 to 11 run between 7:30pm – 9:00pm. The crossover half hour is to help the younger and older youth to integrate and connect. Plans are in development to reshape our Youth Club for 23/24. ## **Bear Valley Church** In April 2023, a team of 7 people from Bear Valley Church, again arranged by Missional Links Wales, visited Ainon, led by their Pastor, Lee Johnson. The aim of the mission week was for them to support and work alongside the activities of the church and build bridges into our community. A week of taking school assemblies and classes in two local schools as well as helping in our lunch club, Renew Wellbeing and Youth Club all proved so valuable. The week culminated in a community Barn Dance in the local Village Hall, attended by over 80 people - a great fun evening! It was an incredibly positive week and another mission week in 2024 was confirmed. ## **Other events** During the year, a number of other events took place to develop our links with the local community and encourage participation and social engagement; - Community Training events run by Cardiff County Council – 18[th] Oct & 15[th] Nov 2022 - A fundraising evening for the Salt Peter Trust and their work in Uganda – 25[th] Oct 2022 - A Foodbank lesson and collaboration with the Home Economics Dept in Radyr Comprehensive - 22[nd] Nov 2022. As a result, menu cards were developed by the pupils, printed and distributed to all Foodbank Distribution Centres across Cardiff. - A full and successful Christmas programme of events… - Tongwynlais Christmas Fayre – 24[th] Nov 2022 - Christmas Football World Cup evening showing Wales v England – 29[th] Nov 2022 4 Ainon Baptist Church Trustees Annual Report October 2022 to September 2023 - Christmas Escape Rooms – 5[th] to 10[th] Dec 2022. Two hundred people attended over the week to enjoy this festive puzzle! - Christmas Film Night – 15[th] Dec 2022. Showing the film Elf, something for families and children in the community. - A CLAS Community Garden Award was presented to Ainon in recognition of the impact of our community garden – 16[th] Mar 2023 - Regular Community Litter Picks began – 18[th] July 2023. These are on going every 6 – 8 weeks by a dedicated team of volunteers - Youth Club Family Fun Event – 21[st] July 2023. Pizza and fun games and activities for the families of our Youth Club attendees. - Limitless – 5[th] to 10[th] Aug 2023. We took over 20 young people to the week long Limitless summer camp, a wonderful event of around 5,000 young people from across the UK gathering together for fun activities, Bible teaching, music and worship. It was a special time and had a profound impact on many of the young people. All of these outreach activities wouldn’t be possible without the support from our church members and volunteers who dedicate their time to serving others to impact our community for the good. ## **3. Safeguarding** Ainon Baptist Church has continued to subscribe to _Thirtyone:eight_ and to use them as the umbrella organisation for the processing of Disclosure and Barring Service applications for volunteers and staff. Gina Baynham and Rebecca Whittle stepped down as our Safeguarding Officers this year and in July 2023 we appointed Sally George as our new Designated Person for Safeguarding (DPS). ## **4. Financial Review** Over the year, the Charity received income of £105,432 (£219,186 in 2022) with expenditure of £105,176 (£465,471 in 2022) and finished with a surplus of £256 (deficit of £246,285 in 2022 which was covered by grants and special gifts for the building project). Income from tithes saw a modest increase as numbers attending have increased. 5 Ainon Baptist Church Trustees Annual Report October 2022 to September 2023 ## **Reserves Policy** The trustees have examined the charity’s requirements for reserves in the light of the main risks to the organisation. It has been decided to continue holding reserves to a maximum of four months’ unrestricted running costs. ## **Building Account** Proceeds to the Building Account have now been expended following completion of the building project. ## **5. Future Plans** Going forward we are actively developing our plans to become a community hub within Tongwynlais, engaging with more people to make Ainon a centre of community life for all ages. We continued to take the church into the community and to develop and open up our building for the community. We want our building to be a welcoming and safe place, the first-place people look for help and community. A place for all in the village and villages around us to meet, gather and where support is available throughout the week. We are doing all this for the deliberate and intentional purpose of making Jesus known, showing His love and declaring the gospel of grace in both word and action. ## **6. Structure, Governance and Management** Ainon Baptist Church is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and was registered as a Charity in January 2018. Trustees are nominated to Elders and by Elders of Ainon Baptist Church which is done in an open and transparent process. Ainon Baptist Church members have the opportunity to vote to elect a Trustee for a 3 or 5 year term, with a potential to renew their term after this time. New trustees are sought to reflect the needs of the Church. In order to join as a trustee DBS clearance is checked and new trustees must sign up to all elements of the Confirmation of Trustee Appointment form. Sarah Rees was elected as a Trustee and Leon Whittle was re-elected as Trustee for a further 3 year term in January 2023. Gina Baynham resigned as a Trustee in June 2023. 6 Ainon Baptist Church Trustees Annual Report October 2022 to September 2023 Each Trustee is given a copy of the Charity Commissions CC3 document which includes comprehensive details on the roles and responsibilities of trustees. The charity employs one full time member of staff and employed a part-time member of staff until June 2023. None of the Trustees receive fees or reimbursed expenses in respect of their trusteeship. **7.
