The trustees present their report for the year to September 2022.

1. Objectives and Activities

The overall objective of the charity is to promote the advancement of the Christian faith according to the principles of the Baptist denomination primarily through the North Cardiff area.

Ainon Baptist Church is committed to:

• Regular public worship, prayer, bible study, preaching and teaching

• Baptism, as defined in the Baptist Unions Declaration of Principle

• The communion of the Lord’s Supper which shall normally be observed at least once a month

• Evangelism and mission, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally

• The teaching, encouragement, welcome and inclusion of young people

• Nurture and growth of Christian disciples

• Education and training for Christian and Community Service

• Giving and encouraging pastoral care

• Supporting and encouraging charitable social action in the UK and abroad

• Encouraging relationships with and supporting Baptist and other Christians

• Providing an environment where individuals can grow and mature in their

• relationship with God and respond to His ‘call’ on their lives.

2. Achievements and Performance

The building work and our new extension was finally completed in early 2022 and we held our first Sunday meeting in February 2022. The whole project took 8 months and the transformation was incredible. The additional rooms, space and new extended kitchen and toilet facilities have made the building fit for purpose to implement our community vision going forward. We give thanks to God for His provision and blessing.

Ton’s Tots

We reopened Ton’s Tots at the beginning of March which was nearly exactly two years to the day after closing our doors due to COVID. Numbers have been steadily increasing and we are now averaging around 12 parents or grandparents and 15 children each week, but we have room for more! A couple of these have been returning parents but over the two years that we were closed a lot of our tots started school in that time. We are working hard to build new relationships.

Foodbank

We opened a Foodbank Distribution Centre in April 2022, which operates every Wednesday afternoon. We now both collect and distribute food to those who need it and it is a privilege to be a part of helping individuals and families feed themselves. Each session takes a team of 5 volunteers to run from a total team of 18 volunteers who take turns on a rota basis.

Ainon Lunch Club

Our original plan to re-start Lunch Club before Christmas was delayed due to the building not being ready and so it was the beginning of April 2022 when we finally were able to invite all our regular diners to bring a friend for a complimentary Afternoon Tea, marking the reopening of Lunch Club. The event was a resounding success - our diners loved the new premises, loved the afternoon tea and loved being together again! 20 attended and we

gained several new ‘regulars’, including some from the village. Since then our regular fortnightly gathering has averaged about 17 people in a very welcoming and friendly atmosphere which has obviously been much appreciated. For several of our members this Lunch Club just helps to add something uplifting into what would otherwise be a mundane existence. We have also felt very blessed in the way volunteers have come forward to join the team - their help is invaluable & are a fantastic, dedicated team.

Renew Wellbeing

Renew Wellbeing cafe was on our hearts before Covid and it’s become a reality since May 2022. We have people regularly attend who aren’t part of Ainon and the group has been such a blessing to many. We have various activities set up that people can choose to do or not do, but there’s always a friendly welcome and a listening ear if one is needed. Half way through the session there is a time for prayer meditation which takes part in a side room and God has been so faithful and brought the right words to say each week. He has used the sessions to really speak into people and their situations.

Cuppa with a Copper

The South Wales Police began using our building in May 2022 for their community engagement programme called ‘cuppa with a copper’. These are run on the last Thursday of each month and it is encouraging to see the Police use our building to help, support and be available for our community. The Police have also dropped in a number of times to engage with our Toddler group and Youth Club sessions, building bridges and connections.

Youth Club

Through lockdown youth ran on zoom which was difficult, fun and chaotic! Coming back after lockdown was quite scary and when we opened up the hall in February 2022 it was very echoey and there was no kit and just a few kids from the village and church. We now

have over 50 youth on our books. We would love to take a bigger group to Limitless next year and for them to want to come to the worship evenings when we introduce that. We are going to extend the Friday evening so younger kids are here for the first half and the second half is for older children with a crossover.

Community Worker

In October 2021, Marianne Smith came from Bear Valley Church, Colleyville, Texas to volunteer as our Ainon community worker. Her visit was arranged by Missional Links Wales. Marianne was hosted by the Church and provided with accommodation and a living allowance. She was an amazing blessing to many and used her gifts, talents and abilities to serve both Ainon and the wider community. God used her to impact the lives of many and she became such an integral part of church and community life. She returned to Texas in June 2022 with a promise to return and visit us again.

Bear Valley Church

In March 2022, a small team of 6 people from Bear Valley Church, again arranged by Missional Links Wales, visited Ainon, led by their Pastor, Lee Johnson. The aim of the trip was for them to visit Marianne as well as develop a relationship with Ainon with a view to arranging future visits where they could partner us and help us in our community engagement and outreach. The Bear Valley team were incredible people, so warm, gracious and encouraging. It was a very positive week and an agreement to plan a mission week in 2023 was happily confirmed.

All of these outreach activities wouldn’t be possible without the support from our church members and volunteers who dedicate their time to serving others to impact our community for the good.

3. Safeguarding

Ainon Baptist Church has continued to subscribe to Thirtyone:eight and to use them as the umbrella organisation for the processing of Disclosure and Barring Service applications for volunteers and staff. Joanne Dinsmore stepped down as our Safeguarding Officer in December 2021 and Gina Baynham and Rebecca Whittle replaced her shortly afterwards.

4. Financial Review

Over the year, the Charity received income of £219,186 (£243,923 in 2021) with expenditure of £465,471 (£155,634 in 2021) and finished with a deficit of £246,285 (surplus £88,476 in 2021). Grants and special gifts for the building project covered this deficit and continued to prop up the income. The completion of the building project accounted for the deficit in expenditure and increased expense.

Reopening of the church after the pandemic and completion of the building has seen regular expenditure return to more normal levels. Income from tithes saw a modest increase as the Church re-opened for normal activities and new members joined.

Reserves Policy

The trustees have examined the charity’s requirements for reserves in the light of the main risks to the organisation. It has been decided to continue holding reserves to a maximum of five months’ unrestricted running costs.

Trust Account

The Trust Account held with the Baptist Union has been fully utilised to help complete the building project and the account is now closed.

Building Account

Proceeds to the Building Account have largely been expended to complete the building project. A sum of £6,835 remains in order to pay the retention monies owed to the Building contractors.

5. Future Plans

Going forward we are keen to develop our plans to become a community hub within Tongwynlais. We are actively doing events and planning more to engage people and make Ainon the centre of community life for all ages.

We want to take the church into the community and to develop and open up our building for the community. We want our building to be a welcoming and safe place, the first-place people look for help and community. A place for all in the village and villages around us to meet, gather and where support is available throughout the week.

We are planning to engage with key partners to help provide essential services to the community and discussions with Cardiff County Council and a number of Christian charities are ongoing.

We are doing all this for the deliberate and intentional purpose of making Jesus known, showing His love and declaring the gospel of grace in both word and action.

6. Structure, Governance and Management

Ainon Baptist Church is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and was registered as a Charity in January 2018.

Trustees are nominated to Elders and by Elders of Ainon Baptist Church which is done in an open and transparent process. Ainon Baptist Church members have the opportunity to vote to elect a Trustee for a 3 or 5 year term, with a potential to renew their term after this time. New trustees are sought to reflect the needs of the Church. In order to join as a trustee DBS clearance is checked and new trustees must sign up to all elements of the Confirmation of Trustee Appointment form. Andy Baker and Kenny Wilson were elected as Trustees in April 2022. Tony Franks resigned as Trustee in November 2021 and Joanne Dinsmore resigned as a Trustee in December 2021.

Each Trustee is given a copy of the Charity Commissions CC3 document which includes comprehensive details on the roles and responsibilities of trustees.

The charity employs one full time member and one part-time member of staff. None of the Trustees receive fees or reimbursed expenses in respect of their trusteeship.
