About Summerfleld Stables
SumMert￿ld Stables is a community group that has been established over forty-three years. Ils aim is
lo encourage children and young people in the Yardley Wood area of Bimingham to understand and
inleracl with horses.
The 51ables were stsrted by Roslyn Tedd-u￿In in June 1969 when she was 21. Since that time il has
been serving the local Community and has provided many opportunities for Children and adults alike.
The young people who visit the stables are mostly be￿een the ages of seven and fifteen and come
from the surrounding areas. including Yardley Wood. Hall Green, 8alsall Heath. Kings Heath and
Billesley. We particularty encourage children who have di5abilib"es, both physical and mental as well
as young people who have had behavioural issues. Some of our young people are not in mainstream
school and we welcome looked-after children and adopted children.
On December 20th 2017 Summerfield Stables achieved registered charity status. Although no longer
a trustee, Roslyn Tedd-urwin stsll remains a very imp)rtanl figure in the day lo day running of the
stsbles and has an important overview in decisN)ns involving horse welfare. The committee is
extremely grateful for her contribution to the stables for over 45 year5 and for her continuing
contribution this year.
There have been a number of changes to trustees tx)th during the year and since the year end..

which helps lo build their confidence and future aspirations. Horse riding and care develop young
people's Iransferrable skills which is essents.al for many young people who may otherwise leave school
wilhoul essential skills which they need foi the workplace and society in general. Encouraging young
people to volunteer is important as this may become a life-long inleresl which will help strengthen our
communities for the future.
Purpose

Achievements and performance
To provide facilities, advice and guidance to enabl? members of the community within the area
of benefit to have the chance of horse riding and associated skills.
This year has been quite a challenging year aeross at Summerfold due to a wel winter and a very dry
summer which led to riding costs across both sites. Unfortunately. the Stables was hil by Storm
Darrah in December 2024 and this eaused damage to trees and buildings across both srtes. Fund
raising efforts managed to repair much of the damage and a grant from the m0veff￿nt fund helped to
gel both siles functional again with fencing and buildings repaired. This has presented a huge sel back
on both siles and impacted our activiti'es throughout the wnler of 2024 to 2025. Despite this we have
our Solihull sile enabling our volunteers to engage in regular training sessions for riders al Stage 2
level and above which trains the horses so that they are suitable for a variety of ridden aclwilies from
Dressage to Cross county It has allowed many young people to engage in competitions from
Dressage. Show Jumping and also Eventing. These ¢ompetib"ons have been at Solihull Riding Club,
the Kings Heath Show and also the National BHS ehampion5hips. Thi5 has been an amazing
experience for so many young people who otherwise would not gel this opportunity. The c05t of
competitions has also been prohibitive to some and we have supported young people to volunteer at
Solihull Riding club in exchange for vouchers that can cover their enty fee for competitions.
The number of riders having weekly sessions us has generally been stable and is al capacity
despite expansion of our opening hours to 8.00pm. There were some points where capacity was not
completely full due to staff ill health and storm damage acfOSS the winter. Efforts were made to offer
spaces to people from the wailing list and a combinalion of closing the wailing lisl and offering
numerous spaces reduced the number waiting lo around 200. Despite the wailing list being closed we
receive regular enquiries on the phone. email and social media. All of our rider registration fomis are
now completed through ECPro and the system is also used for monlhty memberships and booking of
one-off sessions such as FX)ny days and pony camps. The system has also made the reporting of
accidents much rr¥)re effective as well as recording information about the horses. There is still a little
more of the system to complete. Staff and key volunteers completed their First aid at work qLtalificalion
to ensure that they are able lo keep everyone safe when onsrte. We Included extra trauma training
including log rolls to ensure staff are able to ￿SPOnd appropriatety lo any incidents.

Achievements and performance (tontinued)
In particular to providg a Service whlch Is Inlended to make riding and associated skills
available to people who b¢uuse of dlsabililies or disadvantage suffered by them would have
not been able to ride.
This year has seen a steady enrolment in our provision of the Changing live5 through horses ICLIH)
program. We have provided more daytime spaces for this provision which is especially developed lo
support the provision for young people at risk of exclusion, as it is in line wrth the National Curriculum
and so will complement their schwl provision. We are developing our offering to include term lime
small group sessions which are very much in demand. An important part of our work on accessibility
has become raisin9 the visibility of diversty within horse riding and horse care. We were part of a
project with British Equestrian where we t¢)ok part in the filrning of several videos ,with the aim of
showcasing some of the diversity within equestrian sport. The hofses for all research completed by
British Equestrian in 2023 showed Ihe importance for the visibility of minority groups in the sport and
we are so pleased that these videos are an important part of this work. Georgina was also nominated
for a National Award from the FEI. one of four intemalional finalists.
Lets, Enable CIC continued to hire our premises and horses for of 2024 to enable the provision
of more specialised services for those wtth complex needs. This aligns with our aims of increasing
accessibility to horses as we had a large number of young people on our waiting list in need of more
5pecialised service5 which we do not cutrenlly have the staffi'ng for. Lets, Ellable have delivered one
lo one and small group pony care sessions at Summerfield but also offer a mobile service which visits
schools and day centres in the local area. Sadly 'Lefs Enable. ceased ils activities towards the end of
2024 so Ihal Nina could study for her masters in Speech and language therapy. 11 has been a great
loss lo the provision for young people with complex needs and we would hope that some services
would resume in the future. Our pony days have again been in huge demand and our 'pat a pony
sessions, have continued to be fully booked out each time we have njn them and allow many families,
who otherwise would not get this opportunity. the chance to interact with horses. We are k)oking to
increase these one-off sessions in holidays so Ihal young people can still have access to hoises
despite our membership lessons being full.
Our Summer Camp al Solihull Riding Club was again very successful. For nearly week5 we ran
camps back-lo-back to allow a range of young people lo access the range of facilities for all disciplines
from Dressage lo Cross Country. The camps are important. not just for the riding skills for young
people but a150 their Social and emots.onal development and we have done our best lo keep them at as
low a cost a5 possible de5Plte a rrKKe expensive venue. As well as camps we have Provided the
opportunities for young people to attend Horse Shows at Kings Heath Horse show, online
¢ompetitions and even the National Riding School championship at Pickenng Grange where we won
one of the nine national categories. Many of our children have been engaged in activities relating lo
horse and pony racing this year with tsvo older teenagers who were awarded scholarships to the 'riding
a dream academy. giving them a years scholarship lo train to ride ￿ehOrSeS. This is an excellent
opportunity for young people who wish lo work within the equine industry and rts focus is on young
people from under-represented groups. Many other young people look part in week long scholarship
se55ion5 at Newmarket wh￿h were free lo all who I￿k part. With the pony club we ran free
introductory pony racing sessions which were very tx)pular and we hope to increase this funded
opportunity in the future. All of this has helped to raise aspirations in our older riders and help them to
aim towards positive out¢omes either in terms of an equestrBn career. more qualifications or a higher
level or riding recreationalty.

To provido such services where appropriate at a reduced cost or no cost at all.
This year we have done our best lo keep prices al a low level however in April 2025 we did make the
decision lo raise prices. Like many riding schools. Summerfeld was faced with a huge increase in
Costs acr055 a very wel winler and rise in utility bills, feed and staff wages. We rernain one of the
lowest cost charitable riding schools in the region_ 1115 ¢lear that in order to be more sustainable in the
future we will have lo review prices annualty. Unfortunatety, many of our key funders have been
unable to fund our work this year and thi5 has heightened the financial constraints the charity has
faced. We continued lo develop the Changing lives through Horses Program through the Bnt15h Horse
Society, as this is funded by schools through a young person's EHCP and so will not be of an extra
cost lo the parent. We have run both 121 and group sessions for young people and thi5 has enabled
many young people to participate in hofse care and riding sessions who would othernise be unable to
do so. We have had several successes already within the changing lives through horses scheme
which has helped youn9 people to reengage with edu￿tIOn and in several cases move back into full
time education.
To improve the welfare of equines by rescu• and rehabllitation
Our equine herd has remained mostty stable over the last year. We have an aging population of
equines who are d(Hng less and less work with lighter riders. This managed reduction in workload
helps to keep them in good health bul the deereased workload has meant our equine woikforce is
gradually becoming less efficient as our older horses do have higher needs in terms of more
specialised food and veterinary treatment. Having said this. our horses still have a huge contribution to
make to our organisab.on as they are often the most reliable mounts for children with SEN or as a
calmer for many children's first lessons.
In order to support our older equines. we have focused on the training of some of the younger
members of our herd. Two of our newer horses went on a training holiday together lo help make a
strong start lo their ndden careers. Unfortunately. Dreamer struggled during some parts of his training
and showed quite unpredictsble behaviour. An Xray showed li9amenl damage that would make him
unsuitable for ridden work al Summerfield so we have worked to develop his confidence in being
handled so that he can seek a new career as a eornpanion pony through the Blue Cross, direct
rehoming scheme. Flynn was judged to be surtable for ndden wort( at Summerfield and has returned
home lo ¢ontr"nue his educabon. Two other equines, Sunny and Pete also underwent a period of extra
training to help to keep them suitable for ndden work within the sch¢)ol. Jolene retumed to her owner
after a period of over a year on loan to us as her owner has now finished her university course. We
have again spent a considerable amount on new saddles and saddle fttin9 to ensure each horse is
comfortable and has a saddle which will be able lo be adapted lo fil them whenever they change in
size. This year we continued to work lo improve Ihe welfare of horses in our care by providing the
farriery. veterinary. denlistry and chiropractic treaknenls that they needed to stay in good health.
Fundlng
This year we have continued lo build on our exam success and. despite setbacks from storm damage,
we still held exams and candidales were successful. We enrolled two new apprentices al the end of
the summer 2025 and we are currentty working wf(h Askham Bryan College to deliver these.
Unfortunately, the Career Development fund changed its format so that il is no longer using the
voucher scheme which had been so successful for our riders. This was a big step in making training
towards BHS exams more affordable for young people so it has been fell as a big loss. We are
currently looking for another funding source to support the costs of training.
