Objectives and actlvltles
About Summerfield Stsbles
Summerfield Stables is a community group that has been established over foty-three years. Its aim is
to encourage children and youn9 people in the Yard￿y Woc*J area of 8imingham to understand and
interact with horses.
The stsbles were started by Rostyn Tedd-UNiin in Jur* 1969 when she was 21. Since that time it has
been seNing the thal ￿Mmunity and has provided many opportunities for children and adults alike.
The young people who visit the stables are mostly tetsveen the ages of seven and fifteen and come
from the surrounding area5, including Yardley Wood. Hall Green, Balsall Heath, King5 Heath and
Billesfey. We particulady encourage children who have disabilities. both physical and menlal as well
as youn9 people who have had behavioural issues. Some of our young people are not in mainstream
school and we wel¢ome Icoked after children and adopted chiklren.
On December 20th 2017 Summerfield Stables a¢hieved registered ¢harity status. This required some
hanges lo our committee as Rostyn Tedd-UThYin resigned her posrtion and we added ￿) nw)re
trustees," Eleanor Holmes and Jennifer Disley-Jones. Georgina Uwn and Cheryl Fox- Barratt retained
their positions on the committee. Roslyn Tedd-urwin still remains a very important figure in the day lo
day running of the stables and has an important overview in decisions involving horse welfare. The
committee is is extremety grateful for her contribution lo Ihe stables for over 45 years and foi her
continuing contribution this year.
We believe that interacting and engaging wtlh horses prov#Jes a unique experience for young people,
which helps to build their COnfider￿ and fvture aspirakn"ons. Hofse riding and caTe develop youn9
people's Iransferrable skills which is essential for many young people who may othe￿iSe leave school
without essential skills which they need for the woik place and society in general. Encouraging young
people to volunteer is important a5 thb5 May becoff￿ a life4ong interest wh￿h will help strengthen our
communities for the future.
Purpose
To re-school and re-train rescue horses in order lo use them to enable members of the community in
the surrounding area to have access to horse riding and related activth.es with a particular focus on
access for those suffering disability or disadvantage.

To promote any charitable purposes for the benefft of the communty in the area of Birmingham and ils
surrounding district I'the area of benefir'i.
in part￿Ular. lo provide facilrties advice and guKlance to enable ￿MberS of the wnmunity within

to provide such seThices where appropriate at a reduced cost or no cost at all..
to improve the welfare of equines by rescue and rehabilitation.
Public Benefft
We have referred to the guidance eontsined in the Charty Commission's general guidance on public
benefit when reviewing our aims and objectives and in planning our hjture activities.
Achlevements and perfomian¢o
To provide facilities, advice and guidance to enable members of the community withln the area
of benefit to have the chance of horse rldlng and associated skills.
This year was an exciling year for the stsb￿s as in June 2023 we opened a new site at Solihull Riding
Club for the training and devekipment of our riders at stage 2 and 3 level. This sile has stsbling for six
horses and we hope to s[￿Y develop and grow into il allowing us to relieve the pressure on the
capacity of the Hall Green site. We buill our new srte frorn the ground up within one month with a huge
amount of help from volunleers, partKulady Georgina UNin and the Lavin Family, who worked
tirelessly to complete the 511e in kn.me for our open event on the 3rd June 2023, which was well
attended by the BHS. BritTsh Equestnan and the pony ¢lub. Due to this huge development at Solihull
there has been le$$ building work at SUM￿￿rf1e1d other than general maintenance work.
The number of riders having weekty sessions with u5 ￿ now fairfy stable and the expansion of our
opening hours to 8.00 three nights a week has allowed more capacity. Unfortunately due to increased
publicity and the increased interest in outdoor sports and the benefrts of horse riding for mental health
the wailing list is still increasing wrth currently 200 children waiting for spaces. We ho￿ more capacity
for lessons will develop throu9h the building of our new srte and the training of the new horses that we
have acquired this year. The main demand is for beginner lessons bul there is also demand for the
progression and development of riders in all areas. We are continuin9 to slowty expand our provision
to meet this need.

In particular to provide a ser¥i¢e which is intended to make rlding and associated skills
available to people who because of dlsabllltles or dlsadvantage suffered by them would have
not been able to ride.
This year has seen an expanS￿n in our Pfovision of the Changing lives through hotses ICLIHI
program. This program is new to us al Summerfield but il is complementary to much of the work we
have previousty done working with young people struggling at school. CLtH is especially developed to
support the provision for young people al risk of exclusion as it is in line with the National Curriculum
and so will compliment their school provision. The changing lives through horses provision would
provide direct access lo the BHS stage exam and would gNe young people a route of progression
tr)wards an internalionalty recognised qualificats"on. There is a huge demand for this provision from
local schools and we hope to devebp this over the next few years.
An important part of our work on aceessibilty has become raising the visibility of diversity within horse
riding and horse care. We have again taken advanta9e of many photo opportunities with the BHS and
Bri11sh Equestrian to enable them to produce more images showing ethnic diversity in particular. The
horses for all research ¢ornpleted by British Equestrk4n in 2023 showed the importan¢e lor the visibility
of minority groups in the sport and we are so pleased that the photos continue lo be part of their
website and publications. In November 2022 Georgina Urwin won a national award from the British
Horse society as an 'Unsung Hero. for the work with SuMn￿rfe1d Stabks and increasing ac￿SsIbIlity
in horse riding. This award ha5 helped to iai5e the profile of accessibility within the equestrian
communty and the importance of it being an accessible sport. We hope other stables will welcome
this and we will continue to see an increasingly diverse range of children seeking to access horse
riding who may previously have had barriers which prevent them from accessing the sport.
Levs Enable CIC has been hiring premises and horses this year to enable the provision of more
specialised services for those wth complex needs. This alKJns wlh our aims of increasing accessibil
to horses as we had a large number of young people on our warting list in need of more specialised
services which we do not Cu￿ntty have the Staffing for_ Levs Enable deliver one to one and small
group pony care sessions at SuMMerf￿rd but also offer a mobile service which visits schools and day
cenlres in the local area_ The improved facilities and the accessible toilet have made the work of this
CIC possible and have opened up our srte to a huge range of people with disabilities.
Our pony days have been in huge demand this year and our tsster days and 'pat a pony sessions,
have been continued to be fvlly booked out each lime we have run Ihem and allow many families, who
otherwise would not get thi5 Opportunity. the Chan￿ lo interact with horses_ We have also run parties
for Eid, carol singin9 at Christrnas and our Donkey has attended the lo¢al church on Palm Sunday. All
these events have helped horses to be more visible in the community. Aer055 the holidays we
conts'nued to run the HAF projeci funded by SireetGames for children receNing free school meals. This
is a holiday club run across 4 days of the week which also supplEs one meal for eligible children. This
has been hugety successful and we plan to conlinLTre this pro1￿1 in the future.
OUT Summer Camp at Solihull RKling Club was again very successful. For nearly two weeks we ran
amps back to back to allow a range of young people to access the range of facilities for all disciplines
from Oressage lo Cross Country. The Camps are importanl. not just for the riding skills for young
people but also their Social and emotional devek)prrÈnt and we have done our best to keep them al as
low a cost as possible desprte a more expensive venue. As well as eamps we have provided the
opportunrties for young people lo attend Horse Shows at kn'ngs Heath Horse show. Cole5hill Heath
Riding clLtb, online competitions and even the Nat￿nal Riding Club championship al Onley where.
once again, one of our young people won the 13 to 18 year old ¢alegory. Many of our children have
been engaged in a¢bvilies relating to horse and pony racing this year with thiee older teenagers being
awarded scholarships lo the 'RkJing a Dream Academy. gNing them a yea¢s scholarship to train to
ride racehorses. This is an excellent opwrtunity for young people who wish to work within the equine
industry and ils focus on young people from under-represented groups. Many other young people took
part in week-long scholarship sessions at Newmarket which were free to all who took part.

We also received free tickets to the Horse for the Year show for a number of young people which was
for many children the highlHJht of their yearl Raising aspIrat￿n5 is an important part of our work and
taking young people to see high level compelitK)ns is an important part of this.
To provide such services where appropriate at a r¢du¢ed Cost or no ¢osl ot all.
Again we are happy that we have been able to provide services for another year without a price rise.
This has been due lo our n￿nthlY n￿MberShIp scheme so riders pay ffK*nlhly rather than per session
which has provided more stability in our incorne. In order to keep on lop of the membership scheme
we have started lo use the booking System EC Pro as il lakes the payments automatically This
reduces the administrative burden on a weekly basis and will make booking in for a¢b"vibes ea$ier.
Many of our riders eonlinue to slnjggle due financial constraints and we are again grateful to Yardley
Great Trust for their ¢ontinued support of the rr#)st vulnerable riders in their area. We have been
developing our Changing Lives through Horses program Ihrovgh the British Horse SOc￿ty as this is
fvnded by schools through a young person's EHCP and so will not be of an extra cost to the parent.
This has enabled many young people to parttcipate in horse ¢are and riding sessions who wouhj
otherwise be unable lo do so. We hope lo develop this s¢heftE more over the next few years.

To improvg the welfare of equines by vtscue and rehabllitallon
This year we welcomed several equines to join our permanent team al Summerfield. Spot-on joined
us over the winter due to his owner reb.ring from riding and being unable lo find him a suitsble home.
He has joined the Solihull team and is very popular with many riders. Lenny joined us after being
recommended lo us by our vel. He struggles with his weKJht management and his behaviour and has
struggled to find a new home due lo this. He is progressing Steadily with hi5 new role and with training
is is gradually understanding the work in the school. In lime we hope he will be very useful as he is
steady to ride and is a good weight carrier makn.ng him suitable for our beginner riders. Flynn is
youn9 pony who is Sven's half brother. He has had very little training but IS 9ood nalufed and friendly.
Dexler is a small bul speedy pony who has been offered to us by Murphy's old owners as he was
unsuitable for the riding school where he had been working due 10 him being loo fast for the Children.
He has been very popular in le$sons wtth a range of Children. Dreamer is a 14.2 Arab who has had an
unsteady start in lrfe. He will eventually be for our more advaneed riders but he may lake a while to
settle in his new role due to having had many hoffes in a short spxe of lime and this has affected his
confidence. Jolene is a 14.2 cob who is currently on loan lo us while her owner is al university. She
has done many riding club a¢b"¥ities in the pasl and we hope she will be suitabk for riders taking their
stage 1 and 2 ride exams.
This year we have continued lo build on our exam success al￿ have held many exams at Stage 1. 2
and 3 level. Unfortunalety we are unable to run the stage 2 and 3 ride exam or the stage 3 teach exam
but we hope that we would be able to run these at Solihull Riding Club. Again, many of our rKYe
benefitted from the training voucher scheme which rolled out by the British Horse Society and was
big step in making training towards BHS exarrts rrore affordable for young people. With the work of
the BHS and the Pony club having a big focus on equine welfare Ihe increase in the availability of
exams and the training will have a positive impact on horse welfare for years to come.
This year we continued to work to tmprove the welfare of horses in our care by provhding the farriery.
veterinary. dentisty and Chiropractsc treatments that they needed to stay in good health. Some of our
horses wenl on training holiday5 Wlth our saddle fitter lo help improve their schooling or with their
rehabilitation. We have spent a considerable amount on new saddles lo ensure each horse is
¢omfortable and has a saddle which will be able to be adapted to rrt them whenever they change in
size. Sadty one of our retired residents was pul down this year. Toby had lived life to the fullest and
had been retired for many years. He will be sadty missed by so many of the children.

Plans for future periods
Operational
Despite having an increased number of riders on our try)oks we are continuing to slruggle to keep up
with dernand for horse riding. We have over 200 children on the waiting list and some have profound
needs. The new site at Solihull will help our riders to prc*Jress on and hopefulty create more capacity
in this area but loner term we are also l¢)oking for other Fossibilities for creating more spaces for
beginnefs and those needing more one-to-one support. We are exploring the option of opening a new
site in in Yardley wood at the back of Christ Church in 2024 which will help us to conb.nue to meet our
aim5 in the local community.
