Objectives and activities About Summerfleld Stables Summerfield Stables is a wmrnunity group that has been established over forty-three years. Its aim is lo encourage children and young people in the Yardley Wotyj area of 8imiingham lo understand and interact with horses. The stables were started by Roslyn Tedd-urwin in June 1969 when she was 21. Since that time it ha5 been seNing the local communty and has provided many opportunities for children and adults alike. The young people who visit the stables are mo5￿Y bets￿n the ages of seven an(1 fifteen and come from the surrounding areas. including Yardley Wood. Hall Green, Balsall Heath. Kings Heath and Billesley. We particularly encourage children who have disabilib"es, bolh physical and mental as well as young people who have had behavioural issues. Some of our young people are not in mainstream school and we welcome looked after children and adopted children. On December 20th 2017 Summerfiekq Stables athieved registered charity stalus. This required some change510 ourcommittee as Roslyn Tedd-uwn resigned her positron and we added tsvo more trustees. Eleanor Holmes and Jennifer Di51ey-Jones. Georgina Uwn and Cheryl Fox- Barratt retsined their posi1Ksns on the committee. Roslyn Tedd-urwin still remains a very important figure in the day lo day running of the stables and has an important overview in decisions involving hotse welfare. The committee is extremely grateful for her contribution to the stables for over45 years and for her continuin9 contribution this year. We believe that inleracling and enga9ing wrth horses provides a unique experience for young people, which helps lo build their confidence and future aspirations. Horse riding and care develop young people's Iransferrable skills which is essential for many young people who may otherwise leave school without essential skills which they need for Ihe work place and society in general. Encouraging young people to volunteer is important as this may become a life-long interest which will help strengthen our ornmunilies for the future. Purpose To re-school and re-train rescue hofses in order to use them lo enable members of the community in the surrounding area to have acee5S to horse riding and related activitses with a particvjar focus Dn access for those suffering disability or disadvantage.

Summerfiekl Stables. 50th year has proved to be one of the most challengingl Despite Covid causing the stables to close for Significant pericJs. successful funding bids and fundraising efforts have enables us to make continued progress with our building work. The building work on our newest b￿ck of stables was completed and a converted shipping contsiner to be used as a classroom was a150 Sited. Most 51gniftcantly was the prog￿$5 on the 1￿h￿"rtg around the stsble yard. Due to Covbd we realised that our activities would need lo be in much smaller 'bubbSes' an so we installed lighting around the site with funding from PetPlan so that we would be able lo run actNities after school ratherthan juston weekends. We became a Brits"sh Horse Society Approved Centre in the Summer of 2020 and due lo Covid some of the stage 1 and 2 exams have now been allowed onsrte. This gives access lo these inlemalionally Tecognised qualifications for many young people. During the March lockdown our vtsits from le￿1 schools and nurserEs stopped. Despite this many of our key volunteers continued throughout the lock down period. Many of these were teenagers who found that the volunteering was essential to Iheif mental health. Many of our rnosl vulnerable children also have EHC plans and so were allowed by the local council lo continue wlh activities which were an integral part of their education or mental well*eing. As a resutt we were able lo keep the horses fit during the March lockdown and this enabled us to open as soon a5 the lock down ended with reslriclions in place.

Throughout Covid we continued some of our provision for the most vulnerabk children such as those with Disabilities. those in care and those who are excluded from or at risk of exclusion from school. This year we provided Pla￿ments for young Peop￿ attending Uffculme School and James Brindley School, which are both sehools which speeialise in provision for children with Aulism. We aim lo extend these links lo more children in future enabling the young people to interact wjth hotses bul also to train for exams with the British Horse Society. Throughout Covid the wailing list for nding lesson5 ha$ InC￿85ed as there has been a huge intere$t in oulIJooT activities and also many childien have needed aclivilies Ihat support their mental health. Once the stables ieopened after lockdown all of our current rKlers were able to restsrt bul we were mel with the ¢hallenges of the resth"clions on numkrs set by the govemment and the necessary cleaning of equipment. During the pandern￿ many of our young people struggled with their mental health and many joined our wailing list who have complex needs including those with severe mental health problems and those al risk of suicide. We were parbcularly anxious about many of the Children we support who are al risk of radiea1isat￿n and those who are at risk of domestbc violence. These were some of the first children io restsrt lessons after the relaxation of thkdown rules. Our pony days were as ever popular throughout 2019 through to March 2020 however they were then cancelletJ due lo lockdown. During Summer 2020 we became a Pony Club linked centre so that younger children wo ride with us and join in our pony days will be able to work towards badges and achievement awards. This will be a good way to improve chiidfen's self-confidence and our youngest members ffom the age of three upwards will benefit in the future. Many of our a¢kn'vity days and tsster session5 for those with disabilities have had lo be on hold this year due to Covid as scKial distancing is not possible during these activities. We hope to restsrt these as soon as social dtstsncing regulath.ons will allow. One of the huge successes of 2020 was our detem1inat￿n to hold pony camps where it was safe to do so. Due to this we had much srnaller nurnbers on each camp (four on each camp) and had lo adhere lo social distancing. Due lo rnost of our activtties being out-doors we thankfully were able to keep all riders safe and Covid free and they were able to have a much needed holiday at Kinlel Hall in Kiddeminsler- sadly our last chance to use this venue due to its sale in September 2020. Although 8 huge uplift for all of the team the camps were a huge strain on our staff and volunteers who were èn9aged in camps for three weeks as we ran a total of 7 camps. We offered funding for many of the young people on these camps, some from our own funds and Yardley great trust also sponsored some young people.

Several of our riders continue to be fvnded by Yardley Great trusi for their riding and also for Pony camps. To improve the welfare of equlnes by rescue and rehabilltation In the winter of 2019 a new horse Searfett joined the stables from a private home as due to her difficult behaviour and the ownerfs personal circumstsnces making rt difficurt for the owner lo cope. In summer 2020 we welcomed tsvo new equines lo the stables on loan from Ingestre stsbles in Slaffordshire. The ponies were unable to be ridden due to leadrein lessons being ¢ancelled and so they were gaining weight which caused a big risk lo their health. We were delighted lo be awarded a Pel Plan Grant towards our volunteer Iraining and the development of our facilities for the training of volunteers. This was to upskill our volunteers as soon as lockdown restrictions were lrfted and it meant thal we became a British Horse Society Approved centre in 2020- enabling us lo run some of the Stage 1 and Exams on srte. In order to develop the volunteer training Pela Roberts a fellow of the Bnts"sh Horse Society joined the team in a freelan¢e capacity to supplement the training already run by Dan Spencer. This has been of huge benefit to our team of volunteers as well as to our horses. This year we continued lo work to improve the welfare of horses in our care by providing the farriery. veterinary, denb.slry and chiropractic treatments that they needed to stay in good health. Sadly some of the veterinary treatment for the animals in our care is not a￿y5 successful and one youn9 horse died due lo colic in July 2021 and another was euthanised in November 2019 due lo worsening arthritis.
