## **Home Live Art Limited Report of the Trustees For the year ended 31 March 2024** 

The Trustees, who are also directors for the purposes of company law, have pleasure in presenting their report and the financial statements for the charitable company for the year ended 31 March 2024. The Trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and the Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019). 

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES** 

The objectives of Home Live Art are to advance the education of the public and empower local communities in particular through the promotion, exhibition and facilitation of 'live art' and contemporary performance both nationally and internationally, by means of touring, public performances, broadcasts, exhibitions, workshops and courses and other suitable means. 

Home Live Art is an artist-led, queer-led creative organisation based in Hastings on the Southeast coast of England. It is dedicated to developing new sites and audiences for culture by supporting artists to develop their work and building strong local communities through creativity. 

**Our Vision** is for a creative community where everyone can feel at home, and where Live Art is a radical and inclusive way of exploring and understanding the world. 

We believe that Live Art is a way of thinking about what art is, what it can do, and where and how it can be experienced. It is a means of connecting people, places and ideas. Live Art breaks the rules about who is making art, how they are making it and who they are making it for. 

**Our Mission** is to electrify and diversify the cultural ecology in the towns of South East England through bold programming and innovative community-led work.

## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE** 

## **Significant activities** 

Programme of Activity - Charitable Activities 

Home Live Art pursues its Vision and carries out its Mission through the delivery of our Artistic Programme. We empower individuals and communities through creating space for their ideas to happen and develop. 

## **Queer History Collective** 

In partnership with Hastings Museum & Art Gallery 

The Hastings Queer History Collective is a group of volunteers dedicated to preserving and sharing the queer history of Hastings and the surrounding areas. In summer 2023, they launched a three-year project, 'Queer Stories of Hastings and St Leonards,' culminating in an exhibition at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery in 2026. The collective will research and collect stories and artefacts about Hastings' queer spaces and personal histories. Their first public event, 'Queer Places and Spaces,' will feature insights from the collective and a talk by radical cultural historian Dr. Diarmuid Hester on the importance of remembering queer spaces. 

## **Playing the Race Card:** 

Driven by local resident Claudine Eccleston in response to her own experiences of racism, PTRC aims to continue to foster a town-wide dialogue on race through creativity. Led by Claudine and a voluntary group of local Black residents and supported by HLA in a model of creative allyship, the project hosts events and activities that stimulate the kind of discussion that has rarely happened in the town. The group is working towards a major exhibition in summer 2024 entitled: Black Joy! Up Close and Personal and are currently inviting Black artists from the South East to submit artworks. 

## **'friend' by Gillie Kleiman** 

Friend is a call out for 4 non-professional dancers to showcase their talent within the comfort of their own homes, with an audience composed solely of their friends. Deadline for applications: 20 November 2023. 

## **One Foot in the Groove** 

A vibrant and inclusive weekly dance club tailored for individuals aged 60+ working with local choreographer Darragh O'Leary for 10-week season. The resulting dance routine was performed in Hackney at the Posh Club in December 2023. 

## **Painting the Prom** 

Large-scale public artwork on the lower promenade of St Leonards. Funding applications for Phase 2 of this project are currently being developed with local residents to be submitted in 24/25. 

## **Trans Pride Hastings Collaboration** 

Home Live Art co-produced a sold-out performance event on 28 July 2023 for and with Trans Pride featuring the artists Wet Mess and Nando Messias. 

## **'Last Gasp: A Recalibration' by Split Britches** 

At the Stables Theatre in April 2023. The performance re-examined what it means to be together, reaffirming their iconic status in lesbian-feminist theatre. 

National Partnerships: New Queers On The Block 

Since 2020, Home Live Art have been working with Marlborough Productions to support the artistic development of LGBTQIA+ performers and audiences through the New Queers on the Block initiative. Phase 3 will take place over three years from 2023 through to 2026 and will support local Producer Hannah Rose Fox to curate and produce a series of performances at The Stables Theatre from UK based LGBTQIA+ artists.

## **Knotty Festival 2024** 

Biennial performance festival, showcasing radical artists in unconventional sites taking place over two weekends in June 2024 (7-9 and 14-16). Confirmed events include:

## **When the Day Met the Night** 

A new commission and performance premiere in Hastings for Knotty Festival conceived by Afri-Co-Lab and led by artist Anna Maria Nabirye and choreographer Darragh O'Leary. This performance will feature a large community cast, starting from the shared hopes and dreams of participants. Guided by anti-racist practices of collective care and harm reduction, the aim is to create something inclusive and open, led by humanity and community. This approach will shape both the process and the performance. 

## **Salty, Queer Performance Party** 

An inclusive space for LGBTQ+ folk and their allies to come together and enjoy some unforgettable queer performance. 

## **Playing the Race Card** 

The group is working towards a major exhibition in summer 2025 entitled: Black Joy! Up Close and Personal 

## **One Foot in the Groove**

## **Financial Review** 

Home Live Art operates a tripartite business model drawing income from public bodies, fundraising and earned sources. These accounts present a turnover of £178,843 representing a reduction of 14% on our YE 2024 Accounts, which we had anticipated. 

Through rigorous and robust financial planning & monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting (management accounts, cashflows, budgets, audited accounts monitored and approved by the Trustees), maintaining insurances and reserves to protect our assets and activities, contingency plans and funds, strong governance, leadership and rigorously efficient financial management the organisation continues to manage and mitigate risk. 

## **Reserves Policy** 

We maintain 3 months reserves, which for the year ending 2024 is equivalent to £48,000. Through stringent financial modelling we will ensure we will carry £48,000 reserve funds forward to underpin our capacity to drive forwards with stability. In addition, we have allocated a designated reserve of £15,000 to underpin our artistic ambition. 

## **Fundraising** 

Home Live Art successfully secured funding as a National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) of Arts Council England (ACE) for the period 2023-2026, underpinning organisational stability going forwards. Implementation of our fundraising strategy will guide us through our endeavour to diversify our income and procure resources towards our charitable activities. Our annual grant of £75,435 contributes towards both the core running costs of the organisation together with our artistic output across the year. 

In addition, we have been successful in securing a 3-year grant from Esmée Fairbairn to support two new producer roles, starting in 2025.

## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT** 

## **Governing document** 

## **Management & Governance** 

Home Live Art's Memorandum & Articles of Association set out our charitable purpose and how we are governed and led. The Articles detail responsibilities, powers and delegated authorities of the Board and Leadership. 

Trustees are responsible for ensuring Home Live Art is well governed, scrutinised and held to account - providing strategic leadership, monitoring financial strategy and risk, authorising stakeholder relationships, addressing succession planning and ensuring Home Live Art's programme and operational obligations are well managed. As part of this, the board of trustees approve and annually refresh a suite of governance and procedural documents and organisational policies. Trustees meet 4 times a year, including 1 AGM. 

## **Leadership & Operations** 

The trustees delegate leadership of Home Live Art to the executive team which comprises Artistic Director, Katy Baird and Executive Director, Duckie Ltd. In addition, Home Live Art's core team includes Producer, Hannah Rose Fox. Home Live Art regularly collaborates with specialists, consultants and a pool of creative associates, production, education, and performance specialists engaged to support delivery of our artistic programme. We invest in professional development & training of our core team, freelance collaborators & board, considering this as pivotal to our ongoing resilience & progress. Home Live Art is based in Hastings, with a (temporary) studio in St. Leonard's-on-Sea. 

## **Risks** 

A solid organisational structure, strong governance, a leading team, and expertise at all levels ensures risk is managed effectively. We fully consider approaches to risk mitigation, monitoring, and management as part of our ongoing practice. A contingency programme plan and contingency budget scenarios have been prepared; awareness of risks and risk mitigation as part of our on-going practice is embedded across all activities and a Risk Register is developed on an annual basis and reviewed and monitored by the Trustees. Reserve funds further underpin the organisation's capacity to drive forwards with stability and to minimise risk. 

## **Equity, Diversity & Inclusion** 

Equity, inclusion, access & opportunity for all sits at the core of everything we do. We strive for equality, equity and diversity in all areas of our creative programme, operations and reach. In pursuit of this we have implemented a time-bound delivery plan for the year to guide us through a process of implementation, change and improvement to support our development, imbed inclusive practices across the leadership of the organisation and play our part in contributing to a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive arts sector. 

## **Safeguarding** 

Home Live Art is committed to protecting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults. We believe that everyone has the right to live and work free from abuse of any kind. We consider it our responsibility to keep children and vulnerable adults safe and we are committed to protecting children and vulnerable adults in all of our activities and providing a safe and supportive place to work. Our Safeguarding Policy has been developed in accordance with this commitment and the requirements and principles of statutory legislation. 

## **Environmental Responsibility** 

Home Live Art is a small arts organisation, consisting of three part-time staff, each of whom works from their home base to support company business. As a producing organisation with no venue, our work varies from small-scale performance activity to large-scale, site-specific projects often delivered in partnership with other institutions such as local authorities, museums and festivals.  Home Live Art recognises that its activity has an environmental impact which cannot be ignored. Our overall aim is to better understand this impact and where possible, make changes to our working practices to limit or reduce this. 

## **Recruitment and appointment of trustees** 

The Trustees are also the directors of Home Live Art for the purpose of company law. Home Live Art articles of association require a minimum of three Trustees. There is no maximum number of Trustees. A third of the directors are subject to re-election at the Annual General Meeting, with no maximum length of service. Only the current directors can appoint new directors.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the charitable company for the year ended 31 March 2024. 

## **Responsibilities and basis of report** 

As the charity Trustees, who are also directors for the purposes of company law, are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 ('the 2006 Act'). 

Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity's accounts carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 ('the 2011 Act').  In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act. 

## **Independent examiners statement** 

I have completed my examination.  I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect: 

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Company as required by section 386 of the 2006 Act; or 2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or 

3. the accounts do not comply with the requirements of section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair view' which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or 4. the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102).

## **1. Accounting Policies** 

## **Basis of accounting** 

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention, except for investments which are included at market value and the revaluation of certain fixed assets and in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) ‘Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102), and the Companies Act 2006. 

Home Live Art Limited meets the definition of a public benefit entity under FRS 102.  Assets and liabilities are initially recognised at historical cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant accounting policy note(s). 

## **Going concern** 

The financial statements are prepared, on a going concern basis, under the historical cost convention. 

## **Incoming resources** 

All incoming resources are included in the statement of financial activities when the Charity is entitled to the income and the amount can be quantified with reasonable accuracy.  Grants received are deferred to te extent that the conditions of their receipt are to be fulfilled in a future period. 

## **Resources expended** 

Liabilities are recognised as resources expended when there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the Charity to the expenditure. 

## **Taxation** 

As a registered charity, the company is exempt from income and corporation tax to the extent that its income and gains are applicable to charitable purposes only. 

## **Tangible fixed assets** 

Tangible fixed assets, other than freehold land, are stated at cost or valuation less depreciation and any provision for impairment. Depreciation is provided at rates calculated to write off the cost or valuation of fixed assets, less their estimated residual value, over their expected useful lives on the following basis:

No employee earned more than £60,000 during the year (2023: nil). 

The total employee benefits including pension contributions of the key management personnel were £40,657 (2023: £27,850). 

## **10. Trustee remuneration and related party transactions** 

The charity trustees were not paid or received any other benefits from employment with the charity in the year (2023:£nil). 

One trustee, Polly Gifford, received payment for professional services supplied to the charity of £2,700 (2023:£1,350). 

Trustees' expenses represents the payment or reimbursement of travel and subsistence costs totalling £nil (2023:£nil). 

There are no related party transactions to disclose for 2024 (2023:none).
