ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2020
The trustees present their report and accounts for the year ended 31 December 2020, which have been prepared on a receipts and payments basis. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the charity’s constitution and applicable law.
Structure, governance and management
NRT is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) with its constitution being dated 15 December 2017. The CIO obtained charitable status on 15 December 2017.
Training and instructions are provided for new trustees by means of meetings with the current trustees and the provision of documentation in relation to responsibilities and procedures.
The Trustees are shown on page 1.
Objectives, activities, achievements, performance and public benefit
The objects are, to advance the understanding and/or treatment of Neurological diseases by making grants to the UCL Institute of Neurology and, potentially, to other similarly well established centres for neurological disease research.
In planning our activities for the year, we have taken into account the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit at our trustee meetings.
Over 4 million people in the UK are living with a neurodegenerative disease. More people are likely to die from neurological disease than from Cancer or Heart Disease yet neurological research is currently much less well funded. NRT’s objective is to provide start-up finance for practical neurological research in less well funded areas. All NRT costs are personally met by the Trustees which means that 100% of any donation goes directly into practical research.
Achievements and performance
The Trustees are delighted that despite the pandemic, NRT still managed to raise £118,880. This has again come from a variety of grants and donations, including gift aided donations, with significant support from overseas for UK medical R & D. THs Trustees are particularly grateful to the Sir John Fisher Foundation for their continued support in difficult times.
During the year NRT donated £55,000 to assist IoN in appointing a consultant level neurologist to coordinate and undertake specific aspects of neurological research.
Financial review
The net income for the year was £56,880 (2019: Net expenditure of £12,218) as shown in the receipts and payments account on page 5.
All expenses and overheads continue to be met by the Trustees.
Cash is held by NRT to cover grants made or expected to be made to approved projects. Further projects are approved as and when the Trustees are confident they will have sufficient funds to support those projects. As at 31 December 2020 cash held was £148,075.
Plans for future periods
Going forward the charity will aim to increase income generation year on year. The trustees look forward to continuing their support for approved projects and to starting new projects as funding allows.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES/MEMBERS
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2020 which are set out on pages 5 to 7.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).
I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent Examiner’s Statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
-
accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or
-
the accounts do not accord with those records; or
-
the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair view’ which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached
