**Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) 1176249** ## **Annual Report** **Period: 1[st] April 2021 to 31[st] March 2022** ## • **Objectives and Activities** ## **Summary of the purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document (SORP para 1.17).** The objects of the CIO are: - (1) The protection and promotion of health, particularly among people suffering from breast cancer and other breast disease in Kent and other parts of the South-East of England (“the Local Area”); - (2) The relief of those in need as a result of ill-health resulting from breast cancer in the Local Area; - (3) The promotion of research into the nature, causes, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of breast cancer and other breast disease; and - (4) The advancement of education through providing training to medical professionals specialising in breast cancer and reconstructive surgery in the Local Area. ## **Summary of the main activities in relation to those purposes for the public benefit, in particular, the activities, projects or services identified in the accounts (SORP para 1.17 and 1.19).** Improved care for breast cancer patients – Continued funding of training and professional development courses for breast care nurse specialists and other nurses involved with breast cancer patients at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. Provision of acupuncture sessions, fitness and well-being courses for patients living with secondary breast cancer. Purchasing of equipment to improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients with breast cancer. The trustees have reviewed the guidance issued by the Charity Commission regarding the public benefit of the Charity’s activities (SORP para 1.18). Breast Cancer Kent, PO Box 1355, Maidstone, ME14 9UP, breastcancerkent@gmail.com ## • **Achievements and Performance** ## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole (SORP para 1.20).** Patient well-being after breast cancer diagnosis and treatment is an important element of the Charity’s work. The charity supports an acupuncture service and fitness classes for patients with secondary breast cancer. We continue to maintain a petty cash system at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Breast clinics, which allows us to purchase items for elderly and vulnerable patients such as a taxi home or a surgical support garment. This year the charity agreed to fund a 2-year MRes degree for a breast surgical research fellow at The University of Kent under the supervision of Professor Michelle Garrett in collaboration with Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Breast Unit and the Kent Oncology Centre. The research aims to monitor the response of triple-negative breast cancer to upfront chemotherapy using high-resolution contrast enhanced ultrasound and tumour biomarkers of cancer growth and blood vessel formation. ## • **Financial Review** ## **Review of the charity’s financial position at the end of the period (SORP para 1.21)** The accounts were prepared using the Financial Reporting Standard for Smaller Entities (FRSSE). At the end of the financial year, the charity is in a healthy financial position with £261,191 in the current account. ## • **Structure, Governance and Management** ## **Type of governing document (SORP para 1.25)** Constitution. ## **How is the charity constituted (SORP para 1.25)** Charitable Incorporated Organisation. ## **Trustee selection methods (SORP para 1.25)** - (1) Apart from the first charity trustees, every trustee must be appointed for a term of three years by a resolution passed at a properly convened meeting of the charity trustees. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under s.144 of the Charities Act 2016 (The Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed It is my responsibility to - examine the accounts under s.145 of the Charities Act - follow the procedures laid down in the general directions given by the Charity Commission (under s.145(5)(b) of the Charities Act) and - to state whether any particular matters have come to my attention ## **Basis of independent examiner's statement** My examination was carried out in accordance with general directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters.
