Spelthorne Mental Health Association is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation governed by a constitution. Trustees are appointed from the membership by the Management Committee.

The objects of the charity as stated in the constitution are the preservation of mental health and relief of those suffering from mental illness in the borough of Spelthorne. Summary of activities: we run a day centre with therapeutic classes and activities, e.g. art, crafts, dressmaking, woodwork, computing, literacy, plus outings and social interaction. This is funded by a charity shop.

We have had regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit, and note that 1) our clients say that the service helps them to stay well and reduces social isolation 2) the service is open to any Spelthorne resident age 18-65 referred by a health or social care professional, provided we can meet their needs. We keep existing clients after 65, and we provide transport to ensure that all clients can access the day centre. We do not charge for the service, other than 50p per session to cover tea or coffee.

Achievements We have continued to run the day centre and have welcomed several new clients. We seem to be getting more clients with complex problems, possibly because statutory services are raising their threshholds for help. New activities include card making and construction of miniature models. The partnership with the probation service has continued to be very fruitful: their community service workers use some of our workshop and computer facilities, maintain the garden and decorate the building. This benefits their mental health.

SMHA normally has no statutory funding or grants. It is funded by the income from the charity shop and the flat above it, plus a small amount of other fundraising and donations. The shop income is increasing, perhaps because many other local charity shops did not reopen after Covid.

Signed by Anne Damerell, treasurer, on behalf of all the trustees, on 10 October 2025
