## **Llandaff 50+** **Patrons: Baroness Finlay of Llandaff Matthew Williams, Curator Emeritus of Cardiff Castle** ## **The Trustees Annual Report for the Year Ending 30[th] June 2023** Llandaff 50+ was created in 2008 and registered as a charity with the Charity Commission 7[th] December 2017, it has a charity number 1176165. The objects of Llandaff 50+: _The promotion of social inclusion, among persons over 50 in Llandaff who are excluded from society as a result of the conditions that arise from old age, by the provision of facilities for their social interaction and recreation and opportunities for volunteering._ ## **Achievements & Performance** 2023 has been milestone year for Llandaff 50+ and The Pound Project. We completed the building phase in 2022, and in 2023 completed a full year of piloting social activities and testing our building. It has also been a second year of steady transition from focus on the building, to focus on working towards social activity in The Pound, and the purpose of the charity. Over the year, 60 members have participated in weekly activities, with 94 volunteering contributions. We have piloted and closely monitored a small range of activities, and can begin to see that the model, as set out in our Business Plan, promises the essential self-funding sustainability **.** In May 2023, we undertook a survey across our membership, which confirmed very clearly, that Llandaff 50+ is achieving the purposes we aspired to, and set out in, our Business Plan. This dynamic and unique initiative has offered individual and community benefits, and now appears to possibly hold the promise of local, national, and potentially wider benefit. The Pound project is designed to explore whether, with suitable buildings, older people could, and would, work together to promote social inclusion and wellbeing amongst the local older population. We have continued to learn how to manage our new building, security, maintenance, eco features etc. We have continued to build the necessary management structures, taking account of health and safety, safeguarding, and other collective responsibilities. These will be essential as we plan to build towards increasing numbers of people benefitting from The Pound. In the spring, we evaluated a year of monitoring data from volunteers in the heritage room. This yielded valuable information about this volunteering role, and how beneficial it was to this small team of individuals, and to visitors. In summer 2022, Welsh Government visited the Pound project and were very impressed by our building, our progress, and our potential. The Pound has also become part of the Cardiff Council Age Friendly Initiative. The Older Peoples Commissioner’s Office has also expressed an interest in our initiative at The Pound becoming a case example from which others could learn. Accumulated Funds: Current Assets 2022-23 Bank Current £24,001 Bank Deposit £40,139 Petty Cash £20 £64,160 ## **Structure, Governance & Management** Trustees are bound by the Constitution of Llandaff 50+. Election to the Board is held at the AGM. The current Board of six Trustees have remained in post since the launch of the charity in 2017. The Board and the Finance and Management Committee have met regularly throughout the year, as has the Heritage and Activity Leaders’ Forum. As a self-management organisation, with no paid staff, **volunteering is the workforce and lifeblood of the organisation** . The Board has valued the commitment of **eight lead management volunteers** providing a total of 3,051 hours (1,143,936,280,258,198,119,65,52 hours) during 2022-23. The Board has also recognised the risks of any one volunteer undertaking a disproportionate number of hours. The Board has been actively seeking to expand, to add the new skills needed and to share the growing workload. **This has proved much more challenging than expected.** ## **Governance** We are still a fledging Charity, with much to learn and management systems to refine and consolidate and have received much support from charitable sector colleagues. We are now in need of professional support to help move us forward to expand, as set out in our Business Plan, to make best use of The Pound, with all the safeguards of charity law requirements. The Trustees are pleased to able to report that the charity is in a sound financial state. ## **Looking Forward, Plans for 2023-24 include:** Build the strength of our management teams to include the new skills and experience needed for the next steps of our development. Focus on sustainability of the project and the vision of increased wellbeing for the community.
