Chairman’s Report to the Membership

Dear Membership,

Another year behind us and another year upon which to reflect. As someone who has been in this club since 2006, I have witnessed many changes and made many friends along the way, one of which has just passed away, Rodney Myers. He was involved from the very beginning, without him there

would possibly be no club, a very special man who will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Our membership has refashioned itself every few years with today’s transient population coming and going from the region. Since Covid our numbers are annually returning to approximately 150, which is far higher than they used to be several years ago as we strive to attract new people into our community. Several of our more recent members have moved to the area and even settled in the village which is superb for the future stability of FMPGC.

The challenges, however, remain the same. Our operational costs are climbing along with our aspirations too, but I’m pleased to say that we are in good shape. The current Board, as I mentioned this time last year, is without doubt, the best one I have worked with as Chair and that continues to be the case. As a team we work exceptionally well together with a healthy mix of dynamic thinking, solid process and consideration for the entire membership range.

Our demographic has been steadily aging so the Board, along with our team Captains are currently discussing a strategy to attract younger talent in the 20-40 years age range. Our club structure is excellent and constantly improving with new ideas and streamlining thanks to the skill sets available from your Board members, three of which will be standing down this year, Geoff, Pat and Heather. Pat Styles who has served your club reliably and diligently for several years is now replaced by Jon Bulman as Treasurer. Heather Ashworth, our superb Membership Secretary is handing over to Ann Cotton. As for Geoff Jenkins, well he’s irreplaceable! The Board will miss all of you but continue to enjoy your company on the water.

This time last year I was personally at my fittest for a long while after training for the Great River Race along 22 miles of The Thames. Geoff, myself and a mixed crew made the trip to the capital with Serafina and put in a very respectable time for this water marathon. Another crew, once again coxed by Geoff, will be representing us in this year’s event coming up soon. We wish them well.

The Scillies in May was, as always, very well attended with many members going across to the islands to take part. We have been fortunate to have two gigs allocated to our club each year but with new formats and increased demand on the expanding world championships event, it is possible that less crews will be able to enjoy this experience in the future. On the plus side, other events are now on our radar. The five islands regatta in Poole, Dorset, The Masters Championships in Paignton, a summer regatta in Lyme Regis and maybe more next season. There are plenty of regattas to take part in around the region. However, one of the biggest hurdles to attending these events is the availability of a tow vehicle and driver. An absolute necessity if we are to take our own gig. Take note of our towing members and where possible give them a pat on the back and buy them a drink… but not whilst they are driving of course!

Returning to the club membership and the aging demographic I would like to expand a little on that subject. It is my opinion, as one of the over 60s, that this group are among the most valuable in the club when it comes to the many tasks that are required to keep things ship shape and believe me, there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes. With potentially more time and flexibility at their disposal this work force is exceptional. It is with respect that I also acknowledge the input from many of our younger members who lead busy, working lives and therefore can only contribute at weekends or in the evenings. Everyday life can be tricky to balance at the best of times but their training and commitment to the formation of our race crews is admired, supported and encouraged.

Richard, who replaced Geoff as our Chief Bosun has excelled in this role pulling in help from other willing members to complete many repairs and refurbishments. The small teams of cleaners that keep our boathouse smart and presentable should not go unnoticed. It all matters. Our social crews are also regularly taking to the water for the sheer pleasure of rowing, forming new friendships and generally improving their health and fitness.

We are a charity, a CIO, Charitable Incorporated Organisation. We are a community asset and as such a vital part of the lives of the people with whom we share this space. Physical fitness and mental health is such an important part of modern life and we are able to contribute massively to that cause. Having said all of that we are predominantly a racing club, a sport, a Cornish Pilot Gig club, we always have been and I personally do not wish to see this change. Our race crews should include everything from Juniors to Masters but there are some gaps! The Masters end, the over 60s, are in pretty good shape, well most of them if you know what I mean! The Super Vets, over 50s are thinning out and the Vets, over 40s are starting to be populated by our A crews. Although there are no rules regarding older members racing with the younger crews and some are still superb candidates, it is not ideal, so we need to recruit. As mentioned, we are developing a strategy to attract new talent to the club, ideally experienced gig rowers to integrate into our existing crews. This is not an easy task with a lot of competition from nearby clubs so make it your mission to seek out and introduce our brilliant club to the gig rowers in your network. Our newcomer’s platform has also been getting a lot of attention since Jane and Maria stood down a few months ago. They both served this club superbly giving much of their time and patience to beginners and new members joining our ranks. A big thank you to them. More recently a small and experienced team of members has been developing this area and it is now back to strength offering a structured welcome to our club and the sport. I’m sure there will be more to tell on this in the near future. Finally, whilst on the subject of racing, if there are any candidates within our club who would like to know more about forming a junior section please get in touch. It has been a long time since we had one, but it would be amazing to build something new for the future.

Here’s an extract from my report last year: “A new gig is very much on our wish list, but some serious fundraising needs to become a regular event before placing an order. As a club we have not been active enough in this area and complacency has set in, so a cultural change is required to address this. Get thinking folks!” Well, we have placed that order and are due to take delivery of a new gig around April 2025. She will be built by Peter Williams of Bodinnick near Fowey. A reputable builder with an impressive pedigree in pilot gig construction. The keel is scheduled to be laid at the end of this year so watch this space for more updates at that time. Our fundraising has improved but still needs more effort club wide. It is happening with some great results, not least a fantastic regatta day where we made almost 2k but a club wide drive would be excellent if we can all put our heads together and generate a “can do” mentality. Small or large, bring forward the ideas and we can make them happen!

Also, from last year’s report and worth repeating especially for newer members: “An ideal scenario would be to replace our kit every few years with new so that all of our members benefit from accessing the better equipment as it rotates through the membership. Many, in our current club have enjoyed access to traditional wooden gigs since they joined which is superb, however, it has not always been that way. Our plastic gigs used to be prioritised for social excursions and training sessions with much more protection afforded to the wooden fleet. Naturally they stayed better and lighter for longer. In more recent years it has been agreed that most members should, at some point, enjoy rowing the real thing but the demands are there for all to witness with heavier gigs and more

maintenance pressures. It is and always will be a balancing act that occasionally gets out of kilter. New kit at regular intervals will keep the race crews motivated and hopefully attract other talented gig rowers to join FMPGC so that we remain competitive at all levels. I would like to think that we all, social, race orientated or otherwise wish to see our crews succeed in future events and fly the flag for our villages throughout the region and on the world stage.”

This has not changed but some gigs should perhaps be given a rest periodically to preserve their weight and condition. The race crews should be given priority to the faster, lighter gigs and newer oar sets. More and clearer directives will be installed to inform the members in the near future. This respects the fact that we are a racing club and as such, support for this culture is required across the entire membership. Likewise, all members should demonstrate a mutual respect for each other and what each and every individual gets from being part of our club. The joy of rowing is there for all to partake, the racing experience is not but it is to be supported and recognised throughout the year.

It is accessible to all, but safety should be a priority before embarking on such a high intensity activity. The “Friday Night Racing” between neighbouring clubs is the ideal way to get a taste of close quarter gig racing that only lasts a few minutes per race in an informal setting out in the Carrick Roads. If this whets the appetite and you wish to experience more, our race Captains can offer opportunities to develop.

Without the racing element, the heartbeat of our club would fade, and the excitement disappear. It takes all sorts to make a healthy, happy club that succeeds on multiple levels. It is constantly a balancing act but, on the whole, we are achieving this. Patience and respect go a long way to making this club what it is, a fantastic place to get your exercise, socialise with friends, build camaraderie and work out with crew mates on your journeys to racing regattas together.

We have an incredible community asset based in a location second to none and we must always appreciate that. We have regained possession of the beach shed thanks to our good relations with Jan Trefusis and it provides a valuable space to store kit and make repairs, not to mention an ideal base when holding beach events for the club. As Winter approaches and our opportunities on the water decrease, we will be holding more club nights in the Flushing Sailing Club. A vital facility to keep us all in touch whilst enjoying some much-needed social gatherings over a pint or two.

We don’t all live in Flushing but don’t forget that Flushing accepts us and shares its beautiful beach and waters with us. We are a happy family. We are in great shape and the future is really bright and exciting. Here’s to another year in the life of FMPGC.
