Chairman’s Report to the Membership

To my fellow club members and anyone associated with Flushing & Mylor Pilot Gig Club, Thank You for a great year since my election as your Chair. The second time I have held this position and happy to continue if you want me to. Following a couple of tough years through and beyond Covid our club has bounced back with a number of new members joining us and taking to the water with great enthusiasm. Our close, neighbourly association with Flushing Sailing Club is highly valued and the introduction of our Club Nights there have proved to be a superb opportunity for members to forge new friendships, new crews to evolve and also for non-members to come along and meet us for the first time over a pint or a glass of wine! I hope this can continue throughout the year and especially through the darker Winter months when we don’t see so much of each other on the water.

New members and an expanding club bring more challenges too, such as teaching beginners to row, keeping members safe and compliant, maintaining our fleet, our property and our kit. None of this happens by itself and as with many community organisations we rely on volunteers. After accepting the Chair last year, we ran several months without a formal Secretary, as well as a few other key positions but the slack was taken up by those already in place. This is acceptable for a short while but inevitably it results in people burning out and stepping down. We have since filled the Secretary role with Maria joining the Board along with her partner Jon Wood, both of whom have added useful and important opinion to discussions. We do still have capacity if anyone fancies joining the Board of trustees to broaden opinion and discussion even more.

One of the most important roles is without doubt The Bosun, in this case Geoff Jenkin. He has kept things ship shape and maintained and where necessary has even learned new skills to make sure our equipment is in good condition and fit for purpose. On occasion creating workshops for others to learn too. Geoff is stepping back from this role having exhausted his service to the club over recent years but, an old idea has once again come to the fore and this time Geoff, with the addition of several new and existing members has been able to make it work. We are in the process of re-structuring the extensive Bosun role into smaller sections each with a lead and deputy assigned to take care of them. This way it is hoped that no one person will have to endure the pressure of all the maintenance and each section will form working parties as and when required to complete necessary tasks, therefore spreading the workload throughout the membership. The more we can achieve ‘in house’ the more money your club will save towards the purchase of new kit and essentials in the future.

A healthy membership with a good cross section of age and ability brings many benefits. Retired members can enjoy the facilities during the weekdays all year round whereas working members and families need to access them at weekends. Spring and Summer often brings us all together on sunny evenings when training sessions overlap with social excursions. We have some of the finest waters in the country to play on and access is mostly uninhibited apart from a lively south easterly! The annual focus on The Scillies World Championships always ignites its own brand of motivation and determination among our rowers. This year an unprecedented number of our club made the trip across to the islands, many for the first time, raising their game and competing against the largest number of gigs anywhere in the world. In my 17 years with this club, I can’t remember such a united and enthused group of members taking to the water and supporting each other as they did in 2022.

Our Ladies Vets crew achieving the bronze medal position. A great result which for those of you who are new to this game, means we secure the right to take a second gig at next year’s championships. This of course allows more members to enjoy this opportunity as the number of entries is now capped with clubs allocated one gig only unless you increase that allocation on merit. So making the final heat of 12 is now really important.

Our Mens A placed 22nd, Ladies A 25th, Mens B 55th and Ladies B 76th. No less than two mens SuperVets crews represented us with respectable results. I must also mention the immense respect I have for some of the very senior rowers who competed, not only in the SV category but also the open races over the entire weekend. Geoff and his ‘Masters’ age category mixing it up with the younger 50 and 60 somethings and two men who I find quite inspirational as they gave it their all at the tender ages of 78 and 80. What an achievement.

So, with a cross section such as this it brings joy and motivation from all quarters of our club. I would like everyone to acknowledge the importance of every other member who makes up FMPGC. I strive to know you all but can’t always remember every name, I want you all to be proud of our club and to respect those that are trying their best to run it for you. We don’t always get it right and things go wrong, or things don’t work, or dates get missed. With more of you stepping up to share a slice of the responsibility we will get better and even more efficient. New technologies help to streamline some things such as a new sign-up system that we are now trialling and will be made available to you all very soon. However, you can’t beat good old-fashioned face to face communication to keep us all on the same page or at least understanding why sometimes our opinions perhaps don’t quite align. Patience and respect go a long way to making a happy club and a fantastic place to get your exercise as well as socialising with friends and crew mates.

We have an incredible community asset based in a location second to none and we must always appreciate that. We don’t all live in Flushing but don’t forget that Flushing accepts us and shares its beautiful beach and waters with us. Everyone matters if everyone cares. Nuff said!

The Grant was from the Parish Council.

Part sale of Plastic gig (see also last year’s accounts)

Expenditure

Events cost include charges relating to Scillies entry towing fees and race fees.

A continuing programme of boat maintenance

Rental costs no longer include Windsports and but do include Goonreve storage.

Miscellaneous Equipment costs are high with significant repairs to trollies part payment to new ergo machine new life jacket upgrades etc.

2. Commentary relating to the Statement of Assets and Liabilities

The valuation of the assets is presented at their insured value

The loan of £4,933 is in respect of the generous action of members in 2010 who loaned the club funds to be able to purchase Penarrow. The Committee understands that those who

contributed do not expect the ‘loan’ to be repaid, and as such it was a donation at the time. The

club has recognised the loan over recent accounts though this needs confirmation going forwards.
