Reference and Admlnlstratlve Infomiation The .Food and Faming Discovery Trust {Ihe Trusf) is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and a registered tharity. The Trust was constttuted on ￿ December 2017 in England and immediately commenced activities. The Trustees are listed on Page 1. 2. Objectives The principal objectrve of Ihe Trust is to advan￿ the education of the public in Norfolk, in particular the education of chiklren of school age, in food production, famiing and countryside educakn'on. in such ways as the Trustees may from time to time delermine, ensuring the education is ptesented in a neutral and balanced manner. 3. Strategy adopted by the Trustees to implement the objectives The Trusys strategy remains to be: Providing activities to educate about Famiing in Norfolk and to identfy the best way to incorporate fam)ing into the cU￿1(￿lIUm. Seekn'ng to work more closely Mrylh schools and ￿[legeS in Norfolk. Providing educational content for events held by the Royal Norfolk Agrlcultural Association. Public benefit The Trustees have had due regard to the Charity Commission's guidance to public benefft. The main activities undertaken to ￿rther the charity's purposes for the public benefft are, through the provisKJn of advice to fijrther assist in the education of food and farming in Norfolk. 4. Risk Management The Trustees have the overall responsibility for ensuring that the tharty has an appropriate system of controls, financial and otherwse. The key risk controls used include: Fom]al agendas and minutes for all Committees and Board activty. Comprehensive strategic planning. budgeting and management accounting. Estsblished organisational structure and fines of reporting. Clear authorisation and approval levels. 5. Achievements and performance Review of activltles Key projects in 2022 have induded: Learn about Livestock. Learn about Livestock gNes pupils the Chan￿ to experience farming firsthand and by enabting sthools to care for a ewe and her lamb(s) for a fijll school week. The project was ffirst pik)ted in 2019 and is aimed at giving children, ranging from Earty Years to Sixth Fom, the chance to learn about animal husbandry and to engage schools in food and famling education. Th￿ year the project v￿S expanded to allow 14 schools across Norfolk and SuffoEk to take part in this rewaiding learning experience. This project was kindty sponsored by the Clan Trust. Dls¢overy Zone. The Discovery Zorte is the educattonal hub for Ihe Royal Norfolk Show. 11 aims to hsghlight and promote the links belween science, technology, engineering and maths, and food, fam)ing and the countryside. to teach children more about agriculture in their local area and where th￿r food comes from. This year the theme was the potato, and Ihe Discovery Zone Trail demonstrated a field to fork joumey for school groups and M￿berS of the public to enjoy and learn from. A number of brilliant organisations to be a part of the Discovery Zone and deliver content during the Show, including the Norwtch Science Festival, the Papillon Project and Morrisons. wrth over 8000 school children in attendan￿ across the ￿ days and extremely positive feedback from teachers, we are exciied to begin plans for 2023.The Discovery Zone was generousty supported by a number of local chartties and trusts. The Digital Hub contains exctting interactive elements for users to explore. including Whays In The Field. intera¢tNe maps that enable visitors to explore the Norfolk countryside by region or by season. a Careers Section that allows vi5ttors to find out more about the career opportunities and training schemes available locally and the ever popular Conscious Consumers Resources that span topical issues around food, agriculture and the environment Show Ambassadors. This r￿V iniiiative for Sth Form Students promotes leadership, communication and teamworking skills. by giNllng students the responsibility of being an integral part of the Discovery Zone at the Royal Norfolk Show. We had 46 Sixth Form Students from fve schools and colleges take part in 2022, and they all did a fantastic job engaging with the general public. spectal guests and school groups. We look forward to expanding this stheme for 2023. Forest Gardens for Schools. In recognition of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. we launched a joint project with the SAW Trust. Nik Thomson Horticulture and th8 Gressenhall Environment Hub called Forest Gardens for Schools. We hope this project will help schools to create sustainable. tMI)dNerse spaces, which can also yield food, whilst teaching students about woodland ecology and liodiversity. In the first pilot year of the proje(I we are worktng vthh four schools. These types of gardens use the wnciples of forest ecology to have layered Fdanting that predominantly provide sources of malerials and food for use. We are building in resilience lo changing dimate into the gardens by creating more shaded areas. better soil structure and a carbon sink. This is a new venture that we are working closely wrth teachers and school grounds teams on to explore both the viabilty and benefits to enable more schools to participate in the project This project is generously fvnded by the John Innes Foundation. b. Going concern Throughoul the year. the Trustees have considered the kvel of funds held at the year and also consideTed Ihe forecast income and expenditure to 315E December 2024 to be sufficient with the level of reserves for the Trust to be able to continue as a going concern. S. Review of Finances Al the end of the year the Trust made a surplus of £21,599 (2021.. £30,647). The closing funds at the year*nd was £57,052 (2021: £35,453). The charity is aware of its responsibilities for impkmenting a reswes policy. The unrestricted resetves are held to support administration and overhead costs. The intention is that this should be grown and maintained in surplus. Such unrestricted income is expendakAe at the disuetion of the Trustees in the furtheran￿ of the objectives of the charity.
