Stuart House (the House) is a Grade 2* Ilsted medieval town house dating from the 15
century and is located In the centre of Liskeard in Cornwall. It is one of the very few such
houses left in Cornwall.
The House is thought to have been bullt by Sir Henry Trecarel and became home to the
Jane family during the I￿ century. Joseph Jane was Mayor of Liskeard In 1635- 1636
and an ardent supporter of Charles I who stsyed at the House for seven nights durlng
August and September 1644 - a Stsy which gave the House its present name.
Joseph Jane's son. William, who was born in the House In 1645, became Regius Professor
of Dlvinity at Oxford University and played a part in The Glorious Revolution of 1688.
The maln feature of the House is the Cross Passage which runs East/west with its original.
granite arch at the west end. The maln entrance door inside the porch 15 the best
evidence of age and is pre or early Tudor which dates it from the 15 centuryi long before
Charles I's vlsit in the 1641Ys.
Other features of the House include three granite fireplaces. the most impresslve being in
the Receptlon Hall, a fine 18 century staircase. IP century roof timbers, which were
exposed in the Yrussed" and trud0￿ rooms* granite mullioned windows. slate floors and
a "secrev, passage belleved to have led to the old Pipe Well in Fore Street before a roof
fall blocked IL

STUART HOUSE TRUST
Restoration
The Stuart House Trust (the Trust) was set up in 1986 to negotiate the acquisition of the
House and to establish and run it as an Arts and Heritsge Centre.
The Trust acquired the House in 1988 with the help of grants from Engllsh Heritage. the
Rural Heritage Commission and others.
Between 1988 and 1999 restoratlon work was undertaken, in seven phases, under the
directlon of Rlchard Churth RI￿ an archftect experienced in working on old buildings.
By the end of 1999 all the restoration work was completed and this was soon followed
with basic furnishings together wlth the reconstruction of the Kin¢s bed chamber to
Illustrate the visit of Charles I" in 1644.
Since 1988 the Trust has undertaken the restoration of the garden to a design prepared
by the Cornwall Garden5 Trust and has opened the House to the community as an Arts
and Heritsge Centre for exhibitions lec￿re$, meetlngs and as a venue for a number of
local groups.

STUART HOUSE TRUST
Achievement of the Trust's Ob"ectives
The Directorfs report shows that all of the Trusvs objertives are being achieved as far as
possible in a difricult year.
Maintaining a property of thls age is an ongoing task and that, together with keeping a
healthy bank balance are major considerations for the Dirertors.
2023 has been a busy year tying rfrbuild footfall to pre-covid leve15 and conslderable
progress has been made with exhibitions of local artists work, craft work and being
Involved In various Llskeard event
rth the openlng of the old Ilbrary building and other cafes in town there is increased
competition. However the Stuart House café continues to do well. thanks In very large
part to the team of volunteers who help regularly. Our grateful thanks to all of them.
Craft sales, art exhibitions by local artists and various other attractions bring visitors to
the House and some civic events- e.g. the Town Cryers, annual gathering and visitors
from other reglons both home and overseas have been hosted in house.
The garden continues to be a big attraction, especially in fine weather and we are
enormously grateful to the garden team who maintsin it to such a high standard.
The cost of maintsining and heating a building which is over year5 old Is an ongoing
challenge and the current economic dimate is such that it is proving difficult to generate
sufficient Income to cover costs as the accounts show.
