Achievements 2024-2025

This is the seventh Annual Report to an Annual General Meeting of the Rowlands Gill Volunteer Library Association.

We have been in operation for seven years having taken responsibility for the operation of the Library on 10 July 2017.

Customer numbers and book loans have gradually increased but book loans are lower than pre pandemic by about 10% but increasing. Customer numbers are gradually increasing with an average per session of around 23.

In the year since the 2024 Annual Report, we have:

We continue to get a steady stream of donated books. Due to the kindness of local people we have nearly been overwhelmed by the number of books in the library. We continue to operate a system which keeps the numbers manageable through sales from the library, at Tesco, through World of books and We buy books and book sales from the library.

But most important of all we have around 30 active volunteers who keep the Library open and very active. We welcomed new volunteers Debbie English, Gillian Dixon and Angela Lumley. We said goodbye to Anne Lemin, Nina Barr, Merry James, Gillian Dixon and Keith and Anne Turner who have given up their precious time to help the library be the vibrant place it is today.

Thanks to all volunteers who have given their time to working at the library, particularly those who currently work to keep the library open.

The library continued the Warm Spaces campaign (rebranded Warm Welcome) and throughout the winter offered free tea and coffee (provided by Tesco’s) to anyone who came into the library. We obtained a £500 grant for Warm Welcome so the campaign costs the library nothing. We will continue to offer the library as a Warm Welcome space in the coming cold winter months. Lorna Harvey leads on Warm Welcome, thank you Lorna.

Last year’s two trustees resigned and were replaced by Val Rankin and Denize Taylor Thanks to Anne Lemin for her sterling work as treasurer maintaining a very secure financial base. Her contribution has ensued the future of the library for many years to come.

Over the last year I have continued discussions with local organisations in the NE39 Partnership which aims to coordinate our combined activities to improve services to local people and to help them through the cost-of-living crisis and maintain and improve services locally. These meetings continue to be held and the library will continue to take great interest in the outcomes and how we can serve the people for the local area.

A new group started using the library on Tuesday afternoon monthly – the Local History group. It is hoped the Creative writing group will continue to be hosted in the library in the Autumn.

We have website! www.rowlandsgilllibrary.org. It contains our opening hours our services, regular groups meeting and special events. It also includes a directory of organisations that

make up the NE39 Partnership and the regular activities in the Rowlands Gill, High Filed and High Spen areas.

The future

We continue to be responsible for paying bills including gas, electricity, water, business rates (at a discount because we are a Charity) and cleaning amongst one or two other things. But it also means we can carry on providing an essential service to local people. To cope with this, it is estimated that we will have to raise around £7,000 to £9,000 a year in income. We will do this through all the activities mentioned above and others to be introduced.

The Council will hopefully continue to supply new books to the library from other volunteer libraries and buying new books. They will also carry out maintenance to the building. Refreshing the books available in the library is essential to give a great service to local people. This is directly related to the number of books issued by the library. We need to encourage more people to borrow as many books as possible. This continues to be our main priority for our efforts in the future.

However, we continue to focus on is making the library a community hub - a place where people can meet in groups and to get information about local activities, where people can enjoy a range of activities which communities enjoy, rely on and enable them to fulfil their wishes and ambitions. To do this we continue to be flexible in our use of the library. It may mean groups meeting during library opening hours and meeting when the library is closed.

The Council will be providing new computers later this year. We have decoded to reduce the number of public computers to 4 and administrative computers to 2. We also expect the photocopier to be replaced. This time it will have A£ printing capacity and we hope it will operate through wifi and allowing printing directly from mobile phones.

To measure our success in the future we will continue to count the number of people using the library, the numbers of books borrowed and the number of copies produced by the photocopier amongst other things and report those figures regularly.

In March, April and May we trialed new opening hours by extending them into lunchtime and from 4 to 4.30 on Mondays and Tuesdays. The extra half hour was not successful but trustees have decided to make opening at lunchtime permanent, so our hours are: Monday and Tuesday 0930-1600 and Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 0930-1230

Finances

The library finances continue to be healthy and guarantee financial stability for the foreseeable future.

However, our normal income streams have reduced a little. Income from book sales in Tesco proves to be a steady. Group meetings have been popular and we hope to increase their number. We need to continue to promote the library as a community hub and attract more groups using the library as a meeting place which will help to make the library sustainable over the long term.

Any ideas on about using the library as a community hub will be extremely welcome.
