## **TRUSTEES’ REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MAY 2025**

Teach2Teach International (T2T) was established as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in November 2017 and has registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales (registered charity number 1175660). It is governed by a foundation model constitutional document of the same date and the accounts have been prepared in accordance with this constitution.

## **Objectives**

T2T’s objective is to advance the education of children and young people living in areas where there is a lack of quality teachers, both in poverty-affected countries and among displaced and migrant populations. We achieve this, although not exclusively, by providing training for volunteer teachers to work in schools and communities and upskilling existing teachers and head teachers in advocacy and best pedagogical practice. The aims of our approach are to enhance educational provision for children who would otherwise be deprived of such opportunities, to engage parents and care-givers in their children’s education, and to create opportunities for and to increase the skill base of unemployed young people. Starting in northern Ghana, T2T brings high quality education and training opportunities to some of the world's most under-served communities.

The core premise of T2T is that education is the most effective way to empower people and assist them to escape poverty.

## **Achievements**

In 2024/25, T2T ran and completed two extremely successful projects: T2T Radio 2 and CVT 2 project.

The purpose of these two projects was to improve student outcomes by strengthening schools and teaching at systems level. This means working with a wide range of stakeholders (– educational institutions, school inspectors, head teachers, teachers, parents, care-givers, community volunteer teachers and students) by providing pedagogical support in 5 target schools in the Northern and Savannah regions of Ghana; to encourage enrolment and attendance of students; to improve pedagogical practice amongst existing teachers and head teachers; to recruit and train 15 unemployed young people to be community volunteer teachers providing them with a pathway to employment and increasing the number of teachers in the classroom; and to consolidate SMCs and PTAs for effective community engagement in their schools.

Working in association with its local implementing partner, the Centre for Learning and Vocational Studies (CLiVS), the Ghana Education Service, the University for Development Studies and Bagabaga College for Education, and two local radio stations – Savannah and Dashun and their subsidiaries, we delivered projects in 5 beneficiary communities and broadcast 64 T2T Radio shows reaching a potential audience of 7 million listeners. The radio shows, in English and Dagbani languages, featured teachers and head teachers Radio participants were trained in safeguarding, communications and advocacy skills, and a broad range of pedagogical theory and practice to ensure they were best equipped to both appear on the radio panels and also teach using the T2T / CBE methodology in the classroom, directly benefiting their students. The aim was to promote full student enrolment and regular attendance and to carry skills over into the classroom to promote better educational outcomes for the students in target schools. Live phone-ins to the radio stations followed each prerecorded show, and our teachers and head teachers responded on air to those who phoned-in.

## **TRUSTEES’ REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MAY 2025 (Cont’d….)**

The radio programmes reached broadly and deeply into communities and importantly engaged key decision makers (parents and caregivers) to encourage them to enrol children and ensure they attend school regularly - particularly girls and children with disabilities and other marginalized groups – and persuade them to attend school. Further engagement at community level included 30 Community Listener Groups (CLGS - three in each of the target ten beneficiary communities) which brought together up to 1,500 (150 people, two CLGs, five communities) to discuss the educational issues raised during the radio programmes. The T2T radio project ran June 2023 – Aug 2024 CLiVS conducted a training workshop for beneficiary teachers and head teachers with 15 participants (50 % women) taking part in the workshops.

In January 2025, 15 CVTs were recruited from our participating communities, trained in CBE methodology and deployed in our partners schools. Head Teachers and school inspectors participated in the training to ensure global adoption of the project and consistent support of the CVTs.

With regular monitoring and evaluation of students and CVTs, improvement in student outcomes were truly astounding, with an uplift in literacy and numeracy of 75%.

All T2T Radio programmes and the filmed version, T2T TV are available online as an open educational resource on T2T’s YouTube Channel. The knowledge gained helps influence duty bearers and other stakeholders (e.g. SMCs, PTAs, NGOs into education, the MMDAs and GES) through Radio stations and the media in general to support education in their communities. Participants leverage their knowledge about leadership and advocacy skills/tools to support and connect actively to uplift their involvement in advocacy activities in their communities. As part of the activities to ensure effective implementation of the activities of the Radio Project, CLiVS embarked on regular monitoring, evaluation, support and orientation visits to all the five beneficiary schools.

We would like to acknowledge the sad passing of Mohammed Karimu Alhassan our lead partner and director of CLiVS. Karimu was a great man of huge integrity, insight and wisdom who tirelessly served his community for over 35 years, and with whom Teach2teach International has worked over the whole period of its existence. He leaves a massive legacy in the many tens of thousands of lives he touched and will be missed by all those who had the privilege to know and work with him.

## **Funding**

In the most difficult fund-raising environment yet, T2T International nevertheless continues to benefit from generous donations from private individuals, and from running events while also receiving support from organisations like The Craps Charitable Trust and the Phillip King Trust. We are grateful for all donations, including from those who request anonymity.

## **Governance and management**

Andrew Skipper joined T2T as Chair of the board in September 2024, Nick Ring replaced Ian Glover as Treasurer, and Kate La Trobe joined with responsibility for EDI.

## **TRUSTEES’ REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MAY 2025 (Cont’d….)**

The trustees wish to thank Ian Glover for his tremendous work as treasurer. Ian served from 2018 – 2025, assumed a vast range of roles and responsibilities and only stepped back when his wife, Karen, was diagnosed with a terminal disease. Ian was steadfast in his support of T2T, someone whose advice was valued by all and who stepped up to each challenge as it presented itself. Without Ian’s contribution, T2T might not have been able to exist. He brought solidity and propriety to our finances and governance, essential to building our unparalleled reputation within the sector. Our enormous thanks go also to Nola Beirne, who retired after several years of service. We are grateful to Nola for her incredible stewardship, wisdom, sanguinity and guidance and for leaving such a good legacy for those who succeed her.

The trustees who served during the year and their roles were:

- Andrew Skipper (Chair)

- Anita Lowenstein Dent (Founder and Deputy Chair)

- Nick Ring (Treasurer)

- Nola Beirne (Safeguarding) (retiring Sept 2025)

- Anne Grafe-Buckens (Appointed 12 July 2024) (Risk)

- Diana Phillips (Appointed 12 August 2024) (Fundraising and community engagement)

- Kate La Trobe

- Keith Hansen (to be appointed Sept 2025)

Apart from the first charity trustees, every trustee is appointed for a term of three years, passed by a resolution of the board at a properly convened meeting of the charity trustees. In selecting individuals for appointment, the existing trustees have regard to the skills, knowledge and experience needed for effective administration of the CIO. The trustees have also considered guidance from the Charity Commission of England and Wales on public benefit in preparing their report.

The charity, which currently has contractors working part-time to provide its services in the UK and oversee its out-of-country projects, works additionally with a network of highly skilled professional Advisers, such as lawyers Slaughter and May, who continue to support the work of the organisation on a pro-bono basis. This has allowed us to function on an exceptionally small budget, having access to skills and expertise from a calibre of advisers that would otherwise be unaffordable.

## **Financial summary**

T2T raised £18,903 (2024: £74,003) in cash donations during the year. This represents a decrease of £55,100. The challenging fundraising environment was made harder by the announcement that USA was defunding USAID and in the UK FCDO funding was also cut substantively. While many small NGOs are folding, T2T has responded by shrinking its core costs and continues to fundraise from individuals, trusts and foundations, cuts its cloth accordingly, and continues to operate comfortably within the funds available. It also received an estimate £179,498 (2024: £218,000) of free services and gifts of amenities in pro bono support resulting in total turnover of £198,401 (2024: £292,003). The charity reported an overall deficit of £18,641 (2024: £48,446 deficit) for the year. The charity remains solvent and continues to work with grant-giving organisations, including multi-year funders.

7

## **TEACH2TEACH INTERNATIONAL**

## **TRUSTEES’ REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MAY 2025 (Cont’d…..)**

The fundraising environment continues to be difficult, and the charity ran one event in this financial year (the Pop-Up Tea Room) to raise unrestricted funds to cover ongoing costs. The charity's cash position continues to be managed prudently, and the Trustees ensure that the future liabilities are fully covered by cash and reserves before new ventures commence so that projects, once funded, can continue through to completion.

## **Future plans**

T2T actively and continuously seeks new sources of funding. It is pursuing grants and sponsors to consolidate and establish a strong infrastructure to underpin its activities; document and record its processes so that activities can be replicated, adapted and rolled out to other regions and potentially other countries with similar needs as well as its fundamental aim of enhancing teaching skills in difficult to reach impoverished areas. The impact of the global pandemic and more recently other global crises including wars in the Ukraine and Middle East have had a significant effect on the organisation, its funding, and its ability to take on new projects. Because of its relatively small size, T2T has managed to adapt its programmes very quickly but the future operational environment continues to be uncertain. Notwithstanding, we continue to fundraise with the intension of commencing a new project in2026 and placing the organisation on a more sustainable long-term footing. In January 2025, after over 7 years serving pro bono, Anita Lowenstein Dent stepped down from the board of T2T International to assume the role of CEO, promoting a more sustainable operational model for the organisation.

## **Risk management**

The trustees under the leadership of Anne Grafe-Buckens (Risk) and Nola Beirne (Safeguarding), regularly review the risks to which the charity might be exposed and take steps to mitigate them. Amongst other measures we have policies on whistleblowing, safeguarding, risk management and a risk management framework which is periodically reviewed. The Trustees believe that the procedures we have in place are effective in managing risk but continue to review them to ensure they are appropriate for the operations we have in place.

## **Reserves policy**

As at 31 May 2025 T2T had reserves of £34,833 (2024: £53,474), a decrease of £18,641 or around 35% compared to the prior year. £24,397 (2024: £38,904) of these reserves are unrestricted and the balance of £10,436 (2024: £14,570) is restricted to funding for operational and other activities. The trustees recognise that reserves must be held to cover operating costs and commitments, and they believe that T2T holds sufficient reserves to meet these costs. The level of reserves will be reviewed annually and revised accordingly taking into account project or operation needs and obligations.

## **Funds held as custodian**

No funds were held as custodian during the year.

## **TEACH2TEACH INTERNATIONAL**

## **TRUSTEES’ REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MAY 2025 (Cont’d…..)**

## **Statement of trustees’ responsibilities**

Charity law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of the charity and its activities during that year. In preparing those financial statements the trustees are required to:

- select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently;

- make judgements that are reasonable and prudent;

- state whether the policies are in accordance with the charities SORP and with applicable accounting standards, subject to any material departures and explained in the financial statements; and

- prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to assume that the charity will continue in business

The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records, which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDING 31 MAY 2025**

I report on the accounts of Teach2Teach International for the year ended 31 May 2025, which are set out on pages 11 to 17.

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**

The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 and that an independent examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to:

- Examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011;

- Follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission ' under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act 2011; and

- State whether particular matters have come to my attention.

## **Basis of independent examiner's report**

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a comparison of the accounts with the accounting records kept by the charity. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair' view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

- Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:

- to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act 2011;

- to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records; and

- to comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 have not been met;

- to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
