## **CARE FOR ZAMBIA – TRUSTEES REPORT YEAR ENDING 31 JANUARY 2024**

Care for Zambia is the main provider of funds for the Mutende Project, Chingola, Copperbelt, Zambia.

Care for Zambia works in partnership with the trustees of the Zambian Charity “Mutende Children’s Village”.

The project runs a children’s village and a primary school in Lulamba, Copperbelt Zambia

At the end of the year there were 36 children in the village and over 400 children in the primary school.

There are now 7 boys in one youth house and 8 girls in the second youth house. During term time some of these are staying away at college and university.

## **Some of the achievements this year.**

During this year, Marian and Paul Uttley started the process of handing over the co-ordinating role to Colin and Cara Medus of The Bridge Trust Ltd Charity. Discussions began with The Bridge Trust to combine the two charities and agreement was made by the trustees to continue to work towards this conclusion.

The two charities arise from the same origin and people involved in both charities are doing work in Zambia, although Bridge is involved in similar support activities in India.

During this July 2023 trip the decision was made to expand the primary school due to increasing numbers and the increasing demand for good education at a reduced cost. The primary school places are supported by sponsors from the UK.

During the year, three youths were on university courses at Copperbelt University, two boys left Mutende to train in Car Mechanics at Luanshya Technical College. One boy has successfully completed his courses here and was enrolled to study automotive electrical engineering. One girl is at teacher training college and one girl is studying in physiotherapy.

Colin and Cara Medus visited Mutende Children’s Village in 2022 and in July of 2023 when they accompanied a trip with a group from Linden Church Swansea led by Chris Matthews. They visited again early this year with two other people as they continue to take over the co-ordination of this project.

2023 saw the completion of the refurbishment of all the roofs on the houses in Mutende Children’s Village.

A total of 12 staff are employed locally in Mutende Children’s Village, 4 males and 8 females.

During 2023 there was a turnover of teachers in the Primary School, due to government offering more teaching places. The standard of education in the school continues to increase with all students passing their Grade 7 exams at a high standard. The children from Mutende attending our primary school are making excellent progress and those going to secondary school are in general doing well.

One of the main challenges for The Mutende Project is the lack of electricity. The nation is suffering from sever shortage of power and steps need to be taken to install solar power, which will be examined in 2024-2025.
