CARE FOR ZAMBIA – TRUSTEES REPORT

YEAR ENDING 31 JANUARY 2023

Care for Zambia is the main provider of funds for the Mutende Project, Chingola, Copperbelt, Zambia.

Care for Zambia works in partnership with the trustees of the Zambian Charity “Mutende Children’s Village”.

The project runs a children’s village and a primary school in Lulamba, Copperbelt Zambia

At the end of the year there were 40 children in the village and 237 children in the primary school.

There are now 7 boys in one youth house and 8 girls in the second youth house. During term time some of these are staying away at college and university.

Some of the achievements this year.

We were pleased to see that one of our children had graduated with a BA in nursing. During the year, five youths were on university courses, two studying for professional diplomas and four studying for trade and craft certificates.

Mutende has a minibus, purchased in 2020 and the chicken project is proving successful in selling chickens for meat and the profits are being used to support the running costs of the minibus. The funds generated from the chickens are such that farmland has been rented for the growing of maize and groundnuts.

Two new roofs have been fitted by local tradesmen to two children’s houses, so all three children’s houses have new roofs. A new roof for the fellowship house/managers’ offices is planned for 2023.

A total of 12 staff are employed locally in Mutende Children’s Village, 4 males and 8 females.

In June 2022, the chair of trustees, a second trustee and a volunteer were able to visit Mutende for the first time since the end of Covid restrictions. No Covid had been experienced in Mutende, due in part to strict policies. Mutende was found to be in an excellent state and all reports are of a high quality of care.

In September 2022 a trustee and volunteer – who is a social worker and with a history of visiting Mutende – visited the Children’s Village. The volunteer carried out an inspection of the facility and reported on this to the trustees and chair of the Children’s Village trustees. Its summary was highly complementary and recommendations were noted.

In the summer, the government made education free for all children and employed 30,000 new teachers to help cope with this. Some of our teachers were recruited by the government, so new teachers were successfully appointed to replace these.

During the June visit, new textbooks were purchased for the school as there is a need to keep resourcing the school.

The extension to the school, built by Orkid Studios in 2012 was in need of repair. New windows and walls were built, replacing wooden structures that had deteriorated with stone walls and metal windows.

The temporary block that had been built with wooden walls was changed to a brick-built building.

There is a need to extend the school and plans were put in place to build some new classrooms in an area at the back of the school. The old classroom blocks were repainted.

No money was spent on advertising or administration. 100% of money raised through sponsorships and gifts was used for the main objectives of the charity.
