## **CARE FOR ZAMBIA – TRUSTEES REPORT**

## **YEAR ENDING 31 JANUARY 2022**

Care for Zambia is the main provider of funds for the Mutende Project, Chingola, Copperbelt, Zambia.

Care for Zambia works in partnership with the trustees of the Zambian Charity “Mutende Children’s Village”.

The project runs a children’s village and a primary school in Lulamba, Copperbelt Zambia

At the end of the year there were 32 children in the village and 240 children in the primary school.

2018 saw the firm establishment of two youth facility houses to cater for young people from Mutende Children’s Village, who have reached 18 years of age but have not finished their school education or are moving into tertiary education and cannot be re-integrated back into their extended family. In January 2022 3 girls and 2 boys were transitioned to the youth facilities. These children are still at secondary school.

Mutende has its own source of water via a bore hole which appears to be working efficiently and also supplies water to the adjacent Primary School.

## **Some of the achievements this year were;**

Mutende has a minibus, purchased in 2020 and the chicken project is proving successful in selling chickens for meat and the profits are being used to support the running costs of the minibus.

A new roof was fitted by local tradesmen to one of the houses (Beit house) and plans are in place for all houses to be re-roofed in 2022.

A total of 25 staff are employed locally in Mutende Children’s Village and the Mutende Primary School (Harold Mwenge Memorial Academy).

2021 was a difficult year, no visitors were able to visit the facility due to Covid restrictions. Although the school was closed for many months during the year, Care for Zambia supplied a “furlough” payment to the teachers. No Covid was recorded in Mutende, which kept to a strict isolation policy.

In terms of education, this proved to be a very successful year, with all children at Grade 7 passing with good scores and two more young people entered university to study Medicine and Engineering.

In 2021 there were a total of 14 students in higher education either completing their courses or still studying. Where possible, Government bursaries were obtained, but several generous gifts have covered the costs for these young people for a period of 3 years at university

A new headteacher was appointed at the school and some staff have changed, but the school is in a better place than it was a few years ago and the standard of education remains high. Government inspectors are well satisfied with the school

No money was spent on advertising or administration. 100% of money raised through sponsorships and gifts was used for the main objectives of the charity.

Care for Zambia is keen to expand the school and upgrade the facilities and this is in the plan for 2022 and ongoing.

We have had many successes in recent years in educating the children who are admitted to Mutende. For example, children have moved from not being able to read nor write to achieving Grade 7 within 5 years.
