TRUSTEES' REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2023

The trustees present their report and accounts for the year ended 31 March 2023.

The accounts have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in note 1 to the accounts and comply with the charity's governing document, the Charities Act 2011 and the Statement of Recommended Practice, "Accounting and Reporting by Charities", issued in March 2005.

Structure, governance and management

The charity was established by a charitable trust deed on 8 November 2017.

The trustees who served during the year were: S Saner T Hornbuckle J Armitage (Resigned 11 February 2023) A Moody M Powell I Pawsey S McCormack Mrs A Lawrence (Appointed 11 February 2023) Mrs A Clark (Appointed 11 February 2023) Mrs J Johnson (Appointed 5 July 2023)

The trustees have assessed the major risks to which the charity is exposed, and are satisfied that systems are in place to mitigate exposure to the major risks.

Objectives and activities

The charity's objectives are to provide the opportunity of riding to people with disabilities in the Nantwich and District area in Cheshire. The policies adopted in furtherance of these objectives follow the National Riding for the Disabled Association guidelines and there has been no change in these during the period.

The Trustees have paid due regard to guidance issued by the Charity Commission in deciding what activities the charity should undertake.

In the past twelve months the Charity has paid for all the costs associated with the three horses it owns and for one pony on loan. The riding sessions have all taken place at Reaseheath College either using the Mechanical Horse or the Group’s horses in the Indoor Arena. Donations are requested for all rides but it has been decided to keep these totally voluntary for the time being.

Achievements and performance

Volunteers continue to be registered with the Group and DBS checks and references are being undertaken. These have to be renewed every three years. New Volunteers are being sought and trained to the accepted standards in line with the insurance requirements. Currently there is only one fully trained and approved coach able to take sessions but some volunteers are training to become qualified coaches. There is a waiting list of potential riders and when possible new riders are introduced but this is dependent on the number of equines and volunteers available.

Fund raising and grant applications have been severely curtailed during the Covid-19 pandemic. It has not been possible to hold the planned events which has been reflected in the income. Most essential equipment has already been purchased with the exception of a few items.

The Trustees decided that in line with National Governing body's recommendation that eighteen months running costs should be kept in reserve to ensure the Charity has a sound base. They are aware that in future years to allow for the continuance and growth of activities there is an inevitable replacement of horses needed to be secured.

TRUSTEES' REPORT (CONTINUED) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2023

Financial review

Many Charities have suffered in these difficult financial times and there is a reduction in our donations in the past twelve months. Our fundraising efforts continue and we receive support in many different ways.

We have received kind donations from individual riders and volunteers and in memory of one of our riders who sadly passed away before Christmas. The parents of two other participants held fund raising events for us which were both successful and enjoyable. Certificates and Rosettes were presented to them in recognition of their support.

The year ran at a deficit which has been funded out of reserves. The expenditure was higher than usual because of several one-off payments including the purchase of two new younger horses, costs for items for the new build and ongoing training for the volunteers. The major building project has been funded completely by our benefactor but the other costs we have had associated with this will bring many benefits in the future both in additional income and increased activities.

The Charity is back running full sessions every week again on the horses and using the Riding Simulator at our base at the College. The progress our riders have made is amazing, but we still have a very long waiting list of over 50 potential riders which we need to resolve. We are obviously very popular and provide a good service to people off all ages with a disability in the local area. Our volunteer numbers have continued to grow and we have several young students volunteering as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

We continue to apply for any grants that are available to boost our funds and have been very fortunate with the help from supporters who have held private events and donated money to us instead of gifts. We have formed partnerships with other local Charities and three Rotary Clubs among other organisations and businesses to help us. The Trustees are grateful for all the help we receive in this way as well as many regular or one-off donations we receive.

On behalf of the board of trustees

Basis of independent examiner's report

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
