ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE- Charitable activities
Since inception in 2011, starting as a hospital charity fund and subsequently forming an independent
charity in 2019, PLANETS Cancer Charity has built a strong community of patients, carers and
healthcare profes5i0nals.
Overthe past 13 year5 we have achieved more than anyone thought possible. We have-
Established a network of patient support groups and conferences, for pancreatic, colorectal and
neuroendocrine cancer types across the Wessex region.
Fundraised £1 million for the introduction of intra operative radiotherapy IIORll with the UK'S first
mobile electron beam radiotherapy machine which can deliver radiotherapy to advanced cancers
during surgery. This machine ha5 already treated over 200 patients (Dec 20221 and is expected to treat
another 2,000 during its lifetime. It has helped deliver ground-breaking result5
published in leading
international medicaljournals- by drastically reducing recurrence rates for these aggressive cancers.
Funded full-time pancreatic and neuroendocrine tumour PhD and MD researcher5 to work with the
cllnician scient15t5 in Sauthampton's world leading cancer immunology research department.

Helped to achieve European Neuroendocrine Cancer Centre of Excellence status120161.
Funded Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy IHiPeCI at University Hospital Southampton NHS
Foundatiorb Trust IUHSI, one of the first centres in the UK to use this treatment.
Funded a full-time neuroendocrine tumour dietitian. one of the first in the UK, specialising in helping
patients from across the region, with these rare cancers with serious effects on the digestive system.
Invested in a range of srnall projects supporting treatment and care for PLANETS cancer patients from
ultrasound machines, radioisotope delivery equipment, DAB radios for radiotherapy bunkers,
psychotherapy sessions for patients struggling with their cancer diagnosis and targeted fitness
support for cancer patients among many other small but significant and important items to a5SiSt
cancer patients on theirjourney.
This year we funded the followlng projects:
The Reconstruction in Extended Margin Cancer Surgery IREMACSI study which is investigating the
quality of life and health economic outcomes from perineal reconstruction in abdominopelvic
cancer patients.
Ongoing research into pancreatic cancer-associated diabetes, genetic variants and metabolomic
analysis using the UK biobank cohort to help develop effective strategies for the early detection
of pancreatic cancer which is considered to have the worst survival outcome among cancers.
Trial of 3D printed models of livers containing centrally sited tumours, based on patients, CT
scans, to allow for better personalised planning of their operations by creating exact replicas of
the organ, showing the exact relationship between vital structures and the tumours.
A fully refurbished wellbeing room for patients on ward 09 at Southampton Hospital
AIL of this has brought our local cancer community together.
In line with our charitable goals, all funds we raise are being channelled into new treatments that are
directly saving lives, patient support initiatives which change the lives of those with cancer and
research projects which may one day help us find new treatments such as immunotherapy for current
and future patients.

Year in review- Aprll 2023 to 31 March 2024
Thi5 has been another important year for the charity as we continue to establish ourselves on a long-
term, sustainable footing a5 an independent charity. Previously we managed with volunteer support,
rather than staff on the payroll. We have now moved from this arrangement to paid employment for
our CEO and Director of operations as well as a new Fundraising and Events Officer role from April
2023. This additional resource has been an essential part of our charities journey and will allow us to
provide a better, more comprehensive and professional service in the future. Establishing ourselves
on this more formal. profe55ional basis WILL enable the further growth of the charity as we seek to
achieve our charitable goals.
This continued development of our charity has also seen a greater involvement of our Board of
Trustees, with establishment of subcommittee groups to ensure close rèview of finance, events,
patient support and projects on a regular basis. This is an essential part of our governance structure.
This year has also seen us increase our media profile, by publicising stories related to our fundraising
projects, patient support initiatives, research, treatment programs and advocating for issues that
seriously affect our patients.
Some of the stories which we have published in the media this year include:
May 2023
PLANETS announced Its petition calling for patients to be offered affordable travel insurance had
secured more than 132,000 signatures.

It was started after we warned that cancer patients were being denied valuable holiday respite due to
extortionate costs. In some cases, insurers will not cover patients at all.
Following the success of the petition, we wrote to the Financial Conduct Authority IFCAI, the UK'5
financial regulator which oversees the travel insurance industry, to highlight the issues. This has
resulted in PLANETS being asked to collaborate with the FCA, as well as the Association of British
Insurers IABII, to support a review and put forward proposals to overcome some of the challenges
being faced.
July 2023
PLANETS highlighted how we had developed a unique exercise referral pathway for patients to boost
recovery from treatment. It offers patients access to a qualified fitness expert as a routine part of
their care following diagnosis.
September 2023
We ran a press release on one of our cancer patients who has undergone traumatic but life-saving
surgery who is spearheading a research project that aims to transform treatment options and
outcomes for others in the future.
PLANETS have helped to fund the project, Reconstruction in Extended Margin Cancer Surgery
IREMACSI
which is underway to investigate cornplication frequency, quality of life and financial
implications following different reconstrurtion techniques.lt is hoped the study will improve patient
and doctor decision-making and find the best methods of reconstruction to improve outcomes.
The study is being led by researchers at University Hospital but taking place at eight sites across
England.

October 2023
In October we raised an incredible £34,934 at our car rally event- Scrap the future Part 31
Starting at Popham Airfield, with fun Top Gear style challenges then onto Doncaster, the halfway
mark, before ending the long journey to Cameron House on Loch Lomond. It was amazing to see so
much effort was put into these car transformations and to have so many teams involved.
Our Scrap car rallies are always a highlight, as well as being a great way to raise money and awareness.

November 2023
We marked World Pancreatic Cancer Day by unveiling an"inspiring and emotional" short, promotional
film about PLAN￿S. the challenges of a cancer diagnosis and how we are working with patients and
the clinical teams transforming care.
The film highlights the charity's commitmentto making a difference to the lives of cancer patients and
features a number of those helped by PLANETS in recent years. It also shows members of the
PLANETS clinical and fundraising teams, explaining how fundraising for the charity changes lives.

January 2024
We announced that surgeons in Southampton would be the first in the UK to begin using 3D printed
modets of patients, livers to help them perform complex cancer operations. The story received
widespread Local and national media coverage.
Converting the data available from CT and MRI scans of patients with hilar cholangiocarcinoma -
type of bile duct cancer
into 3D models will enable better planning and decision-making prior to
surgery.
As the cancer occurs in the bile ducts that lead out of the liver and join with the gallbladder, it 15
frequentLy difficult for surgeons to establish whether a tumour can be safely removed or not until the
operation is underway.
As a result, this can Lead to °irreversiblÈ steps" being taken that may result in poor short and long-
term outcomes for patients. By using 3D printed models tailored to each patient, clinicians will be
able to assess the tumour and its close attachrnents such as blood vessels and bile ducts at scale pre-
surgery.
The project is led by Mr Arjun Takhar, a consultant hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancer surgeon at
University Hospital Southampton, who is part of a team of experts supported by PLANETS, which is
funding the pilot study and has received a £2,000 grant from The H05Pltal Satur&lay Fund to put
towards the initiative.

February 2024
A new wellbeing room funded by PLANETS opened for patients with Liver diseases at University
Hospltal Southampton.
The facility, located on the gastroenterology and hepatology ward, provides a quiet space for patients
and a place for private conversations which would previously have taken place at the bedside.
It offers the opportunity for patients to relax on the sofa and watch TV and there are plans to add
weights and cardio equipment in the coming months.
PLANETS contributed £12,000 for the development which was made possible through a partnership
with property developer Taylor Wimpey Southern Counties, which raised more than £20,000 for the
harity over 2023 after making it the company's'charity of the year,.
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Financial position
The Charity's financial position as of 31 March 2024 can be found in the Balance Sheet. As of 31 March
2024 the charity bank balance was £375,616.55 {and £85,000 currently in a high interest savings
account). The charity generated income of £419,896 for the period from l April 2023 to 31 March
2024.
At the beginning of the financial year we had £17,102 ringfenc&d to go toward5 funding Research and
Development Projects.

Throughout the year we funded the following R&D=
The Reconstruction in Extended Margin Cancer Surgery IREMACSI study which is investigating the
quality of life and health economic outcomes from perineal reconstruction in abdominopelvic
cancer patient5.
Ongoing research into pancreatic cancer-associated diabetes, genetic variants and metabolomic
analysis using the UK biobank cohort to help develop effective strategies for the early detection
of pancreatic cancer which is considered to have the worst survival outcome among cancers.
We also funded the following projects..
Trial of 3D printed models of livers based on patients, CT scans to allow for better personalised
planning of their operations by creating exact replicas of the organ.
A new wellbeing room at University Hospltal Southampton within the gastroenterology and
hepatology. This provides a quiet space for private conversations as well a5 the opportunity for
patients to relax or exercise using weights or cardio equipment to maintain their physical
condition.
A NET dietitian wasjointly funded with the Robert White Trust to help patients across the Wessex
NET group area, including attendance at the weekly NET MDT as well as at the monthly NET
clinics in Dorchester, Poole, Bournemouth, Southampton, and Portsmouth. The role is also
designed to include education of patients and other members of the clinical service around the
region about dietary management of NET patients. (Funding started in May 2021 at a cost of £5k
per monthl our liability for this ended July 2023 with the hospital trusts now supporting this role
permanently.
We also funded numerous patient support days and conferences.
The Charity will continue to operate normally for a period of at least 12 months from the date of
approval of the financialstatements.
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Reserves policy
For 2023124 the Charity's reserves policy, which is reviewed each year, was to retain an amount of
unrestricted reserves which was enough to cover l year of governance. management, fundraising and
administration. We aim to Spend income within 36 months of receipt. Where sums are set aside
towards the cost of a project or piece of equipment, we ringfence those sums until enough money is
available to meet the full cost of the project.

FUTURE PLANS
We need to raise £2 million over the next five years to achieve our goals of providing at least £250,000
for patient support. £500,000 for research into PLANETS cancers and £750.000 for innovative
treatments, whilst also covering our administrative costs which we aim to keep below 25% of turnover.
In the current, cost-cutting NHS environment, research and innovation is in danger of being side-
lined. The PLANETS team aim to ensure that patients across our region and further afield still have
access to the best available care. We are committed to funding several further projects including:
The ongoing support of the REMACS study. This is a national study and we are co-funding a PhD
researcher looking at quality of Ilfe and outcome measures after a range of different surgical
techniques for managing advanced pelvic cancers, such as recurrent rectal cancer.
Ongoing research into predictive Models for identifying people at risk of developing pancreati
cancer, using genomic data frorn cancer patients and the UK biobank as well as clinical riskfactors. We
are committed to funding laboratory costs for a PhD researcher.
50% Part funding an Upper Gl Cancer Network Data Controller p05t to enable dedicated and
onsistent, accurate, timely and secure data acquisition from clinical and basicltranslational science
sources. Over the 3-year lifecycle of the project, we aim to explore options for automation of data
extraction and acquisition via development of our existing relationships with the Clinical Informatics
Research Unit and the Social Data Foundation.
We are looking to support a clinical trial of chemosaturation therapy for secondary liver cancer which
works by isolating the liver from the rest of the body and 'bathing' it in much larger doses of
chemotherapy than would normally be possible because it does not enter the bloodstream.
We are also looking at potential collaboration with Southarnpton Hospita15 Charity to each fund 25%
of the cost of a new Da Vinci surgical robot, to doubLe the number of PLANETS Cancer patients
offered minimally invasive robotic surgery at the regional cancer centre in Southampton and
establish UHS as a national training centre for robotic cancer surgery.
