Transport Events Attended by the Teesside 500 Group’s Vehicles
Despite operational problems with our buses having forced the
cancellation of the last two events of our Autumn 2021 programme, we
were able to go into 2022 with perhaps the most ambitious rally
programme we have ever offered our members. Once into May 2022, we
were “out” on almost every weekend until September and even attended
five rallies with all three of our current runners, Dennis Loline JDC599,
Bristol VR RDC106R and Volvo Olympian M223SVN. As well as the
regular events, we also offered several new venues. A full list of our
attendances is detailed below:

We also participated in two other community events:

Vehicle accommodation, repair, maintenance and restoration

Of our seven vehicles, three (JDC599, RDC106R and M223SVN) were operational in the year with current MOTs. We invested a total of £3,113 in the accommodation, repair, maintenance and restoration of our vehicles.

Cleveland Transit 1995 Volvo Olympian M223SVN

Expenditure during the year was incurred for the replacement of a set of rear suspension plates and air bags together with two batteries. Middlesbrough Corporation Transport 1958 Dennis Loline JDC599 JDC599 suffered no significant maintenance issues and was available for the full season of events. Cleveland Transit 1977 Bristol VR RDC106R The fuel leak which RDC106R had developed towards the end of the 2021 season was successfully repaired during the winter of 2021/22. The bus was returned to operational service in spring 2022.

Towards the end of the 2022 season, the bus’s air compressor suffered a serious failure rendering it beyond repair. A replacement unit was sourced with the intention of it being fitted during the 2022/23 winter maintenance programme. Teesside Municipal Transport 1972 Daimler Fleetline JDC544L JDC544L was sent to an external repairer in 2018 from remedial work to its chassis. Following a hiatus in the project due to Covid-19, steady progress has been made during 2022. However, as the work has progressed, further corrosion to the chassis has been uncovered. Realistically, we do not now expect the repairs to be completed until the end of 2024 at the earliest. Tees-side Railless Traction Board 1967 Leyland PD2 JVN40E Given our other vehicles’ demands upon our team of volunteers, only limited further progress has been made on the restoration of JVN40E. Stagecoach on Teesside 2004 MAN 18.220 NK54BFE Since being purchased in October 2020, NK54BFE has been safely stored undercover. A number of issues remain to be addressed before the bus will be ready for MOT; these include the refurbishment of the battery cubicle, bodywork repairs to the front skirt, repair of the offside rear inner wheel arch liner, together with the fitting of replacement tyres. We plan to have this work completed during 2023.

Cleveland Transit 1998 Volvo Olympian R833OVN

This vehicle remains a non-runner with its replacement engine (purchased in the last financial year) still to be fitted. It has been stored at an external location.

Activities for the Membership

Monthly meetings are held for members at which the Trustees provide updates on vehicles and events before a main presentation on a transport-related theme either by one of the members or by a guest speaker. Meetings are usually attended by approximately thirty members and friends. During the Covid-19 restrictions, these were conducted online until in-person meetings could resume in spring 2022.

We continue to seek to maintain our members’ interest and engagement by the use of social media and our bi-monthly Newsletter. Our main Facebook page continues to carry our news to a wider audience and we have also posted regular nostalgia features on The Friends of The 500 Group Facebook page. Our Teesside 500 Group website also keeps members and the general public informed of our activities.

Section D Achievements and erformance p

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

With the relaxation of the Covid-19 restrictions, we undertook our most ambitious programme of events ever, attending fifteen historic vehicle rallies during the spring and summer of 2022.

Our activities through the course of the year generated a net surplus of income over expenditure of £4,940. This will be used to fund a number of restoration projects planned for 2023.

We have continued to develop links with local museums and other local transport history charities for the purpose of developing an archive of historic material.
