One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking up and gently throwing things into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked: "What are you doing?" The boy replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up, and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them back, they'll die”. ## **What we do:**
- **Carers Break Service –** volunteers give the carer a break by sitting with the person being cared for
- **Our Neighbourhood** – volunteer befriending and activities to reduce loneliness and social isolation
- **Carers Support Group –** we organise a monthly meeting to offer carers the opportunity to share concerns, receive support and simply take time out to relax
- `o` **Tea and Tunes –** is a quarterly event for people to come together to participate
in a performance by local musicians, followed by conversation, tea and cake.
- **Walking Group –** the group meets monthly and every client has a dedicated volunteer walking with them. The carer (husband/wife/son/daughter) has a day off knowing their loved one is doing something they love. The benefits of physical exercise and good company are incalculable.
`o` **Community Development in Northern Ryedale and Whitby District** – our Activities Coordinator runs a Farmers Breakfast in Lythe and has supported the development of a number of friendship groups in small rural communities in northern Ryedale and rural parts of Whitby District. **Lythe Farmers Breakfast** , on the first Wednesday every month was set up because loneliness and isolation has become endemic in many of our rural areas in North Yorkshire. This monthly group provides, those who are less able to interact and find themselves isolated, the opportunity to meet with friends old and new for a cup of tea, listen to a rural or locally inspired speaker and then most importantly have a bacon buttie and a chat.
- **On - Line Activities**
Ryedale Carers Support continues to provide 2 online activities that have filled an unmet need and have proved to be very popular:
**Virtual Walks** Volunteer ranger, Davy Major from the North York Moors National Parks leads a monthly virtual walk, enabling people to enjoy the countryside and a chat from the comfort of their sofas through Zoom. Walks include views, local and historical information and show the best of the national park in all seasons. Time for a chat, questions and sharing is always a part of this friendly and informal group. If people need help starting with Zoom, we can offer support to get them going.

**Virtual Singalongs** over 25 people who can’t get out meet on line to sing along to a variety of musical genres, music from the shows, country, sounds of the 60’s and much more. The social connection has helped people feel less isolated:
- **Community One Stop** run in conjunction with Ryedale Charities Together the Community One Stop is a doorway into the voluntary sector. Most people know how to access their GP and Health and Adult Services but the voluntary sector can be very confusing. There are two Community One Stops, they are held once a month in Pickering and Kirkbymoorside.

It was so successful last year, Ryedale Carers Support decided to do another calendar for 2024 as a way to reach out and connect with all our clients and volunteers. The A4 double sided card has a variety of photographs that highlight the different RCS activities

A quarterly newsletter for Ryedale Carers Support volunteers to keep them informed and involved in what we have been doing. As well as a ‘letter from Claire’, we feature recent sessions and events; what’s coming up; a humorous cartoon and useful contacts which the volunteer can share with the person they are visiting.

## **Working with other groups**
Ryedale Carers Support is known for responding to need and we can often do this by working with other community groups such as Next Steps, Sight Support, Carers Plus, the Ryedale Festival and Art Beat. In Ryedale we are very fortunate to have a strong community sector and this is reflected in Ryedale Charities Together (RCT). This is a group of six local charities who deliver services in Ryedale but do not belong to a national body. Over the last 2 years we have been working together to provide community one stops in our market towns.

## **Our Volunteers**
Ryedale Carers’ volunteers are the heart of the organisation and the 154 volunteers registered with us make a significant difference to the people they visit. We are very grateful for all their hard work and commitment. In April 2023 we had a thank you event at the Arboretum at Castle Howard, 54 volunteers attended. We are very grateful to the trustees of the Arboretum for making this possible. Later in April 2023 King Charles visited Malton, Claire Hall, Chief Officer of Ryedale Carers Support was presented to the King. This was a validation of the reputation of Ryedale Carers Support and the value the community places on the excellent work our volunteers do supporting our carers and the people they care for.
Ryedale Carers’ volunteers are the backbone of all that we do: we could not be the organisation we are without the hard work of all our volunteers and we are very grateful for the time they give us.
**Our Neighbourhood** is about connecting communities and providing support to people who may be isolated, lonely or need a bit of extra help. Our Neighbourhood is a project run in partnership with Carers Plus Yorkshire who hold the contract with NYC. With the help of our volunteers Our Neighbourhood aims to:
- Help people stay well and active within their local community or neighbourhood
- Offer opportunities to meet new people, join in social activities and perhaps try something different

## **Community Development in Northern Ryedale and Whitby District**
Farmers Breakfast has reached capacity with its clients, and a waiting list is now in operation. The speakers over the last year have ranged from a very tasty and informative visit from Whitby Seafoods, to live flying owls and birds prey in the village hall with a visit from Whitby Falcons.
Rod Dimbleby of The Yorkshire Post fame came and spoke to the group about the ‘Yorkshire Dialect’.
There are usually about 35 clients who attend the event with a good selection of volunteers who come on a regular basis.
Having celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee in 2022, we were fortunate enough to secure a
grant from the Woodsmith foundation to celebrate and have a party the coronation of King Charles 3[rd] . The party was celebrated with the children from Lythe Primary school, The group enjoyed a lovely trip out to the Kirkleatham museum, followed by a trip to Kaskanes in Skinningrove for a very good lunch.
Whitby DAG have been sending a regular mini bus to collect clients who have had to relocate to Whitby due to housing shortages in the villages.
The volunteers continue to be an invaluable help.
## **The Future**
Claire Hall has been with Ryedale Carers Support for 30 years and Chief Officer for the last 8 years, she has decided that now is the time to retire. The charity has been very fortunate in finding and appointing Ann Ferguson who will take over in July 2024. To mark her retirement and to give something back to RCS, Claire decided to do a sponsored walk around the perimeter of Ryedale, 91 miles over 7 days. The walk was launched in March 2024 with an article in the Yorkshire Post but will be completed in May 2024. At the end of this financial year over £6000 had been raised, we hope the total will be more than that.

His wife said I’d been the most important person in his life for the last 18 months. That makes you feel good.”
“It’s a friendship thing. The people I visit are lovely, really chatty - and RCS are very good at matching interests. One of my ladies read The Times every Sunday and she keeps me up to date!”

A has been fantastic, he’s the right person, they get on really well. It’s been a brilliant experience. When R goes down the path with A, chatting away, I feel a load off my shoulders. Normally, I’d walk out with him so I’m always involved. Knowing that he’s safe, and he’s with someone else .. I just go inside and it’s a huge, huge weight off my shoulders. “

Ryedale Carers Support will continue to offer face to face support, on line and group activities. Our funding is secure for the next 3 years and if we deliver a successful Carers Break Service, North Yorkshire Council have given us the option to extend for a further 4 years; this together with 3 years funding for the ‘Our Neighbourhood’ project and a new partnership agreement between Ryedale Carers Support, Support for Carers Scarborough and Caring Together Whitby gives us a firm platform and the building blocks to develop and extend our services. As can be evidenced by the new Tea and Tunes activity set up to replace the very successful Songs and Scones, we ran before the covid long down.
We know that working with others enables RCS to provide the best possible service for their clients.

The trustees confirm that they have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit when reviewing the objectives and activities and in the planning of future activities.

## **Achievements and performance**
A detailed review of the charity's activities and achievements in year are contained in the separate document 'Ryedale Carers Support Annual Report April 2023 - March 2024'
## **Financial Review**
The results for the period ending 31st March 2024 show final balances of £71,965 unrestricted general funds; £52,553 designated funds and £52,281 restricted funds. In year, the overall operational surplus, after transfers was £1,116; comprising a surplus in year of £13,994 on unrestricted funds partly offset by a deficit of £12,878 on restricted funds.
The surplus in year on unrestricted general funds is largely due to the fundraising income received to 31 March for the sponsored walk and corresponding gift aid. Donations have remained high again this year plus there has been a significant increase in bank interest received due to increasing interest rates. The deficit in year on restricted funds mainly reflects the spending this year of grants received in previous years. The restricted funding grants are listed in note 13 to the accounts, 'Movement of Funds', all of which show favourable balances at 31 March 2024.
The level of free reserves, that is those unrestricted funds not tied up in tangible fixed assets, nor held in designated funds, stands at £71,163 at 31st March 2024. The trustees consider that this level of free reserves is in line with the target level set in the reserves policy of one quarter of the annual projected expenditure for the forthcoming year.

## **Trustee's responsibilities in relation to the financial statements**
The charity trustees are responsible for preparing a trustees' annual report and financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice). The law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the charity trustees to prepare financial statements for each year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources, of the charity for that period.
In preparing the financial statements, the trustees are required to:
- select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;
- observe the methods and principles in the applicable Charities SORP;
- make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
- state whether applicable accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material departures that must be disclosed and explained in the financial statements;
- prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in business.
The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
The trustees are also responsible for the maintenance and integrity of the charity and financial information included on the charity's website in accordance with legislation in the United Kingdom governing the preparation and dissemination of financial statements.

I report on the accounts of: **Ryedale Carers Support CIO** for the year ended: **31 March 2024** which are set out on pages 6 to 15.
## **Responsibilities and basis of report**
As the charity’s trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ("the Act").
I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5) (b) of the Act.
## **Independent examiner's statement**
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that, in any material respect:
- accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Act; or
- the accounts do not accord with the accounting records; or
- the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

The financial statements are prepared under the historical cost convention. These accounts have been prepared in accordance with: the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) and the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102).
The charity constitutes a public benefit entity as defined by FRS 102.

There has been no offsetting of assets and liabilities, or income and expenses, unless required or permitted by the FRS 102 SORP or FRS 102.
## **Grants and donations**
Grants and donations are only included in the SoFA when the charity has evidence of entitlement to the resources and receipt is probable.
## **Government grants**
The charity has received government grants in the reporting period.
## **Tax reclaims on donations and gifts**
Gift Aid receivable is included in income when there is a valid declaration from the donor. Any Gift Aid amount recovered on a donation is considered to be part of that gift and is treated as an addition to the same fund as the initial donation.
## **Contractual income and performance related grants**
In the case of contractual income and performance related grants, income is only recognised once the charity has provided the specified services or performance related conditions.
## **Volunteer help**
The value of any voluntary help received is not included in the accounts but is described in the Trustees' Annual Report.
## **Investment income**
This is included in the accounts when receipt is probable and the amount receivable can be measured reliably.

## **2.2 Expenditure and Liabilities**
## **Raising funds**
Cost of raising funds comprise those costs associated with attracting voluntary income.
## **Charitable activities**
Charitable activities expenditure comprises those costs incurred by the charity in the delivery of its activities and services. It includes both costs that can be allocated directly to such activities and those costs of an indirect nature necessary to support them. Where costs are apportioned between projects, it is on the basis of staff time spent on each activity.
## **Liability recognition**
Liabilities are recognised where it is more likely than not that there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to pay out resources and the amount of the obligation can be measured with reasonable certainty.
## **Redundancy cost**
The cost of redundancies are calculated using the statutory redundancy pay guidelines.
## **2.3 Assets**
## **Tangible fixed assets for use by the charity**
These are capitalised if they can be used for more than one year and cost at least £700 each. They are valued at cost. Depreciation is provided at rates to write off the cost of the asset over a four year period leaving a nil residual value.
## **Taxation**
The company is a registered charity and is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities.
## **Fund accounting**
Unrestricted funds are funds which are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the general objectives of the charity.
Designated funds are unrestricted funds that are resources set aside for specific purposes at the discretion of the trustees.
Restricted funds are funds which can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor.
Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.
## **Leasing commitments**
Rentals paid under operating leases are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities on a straight line basis over the period of the lease.

The charity contributes to each employee's chosen defined contribution pension scheme. The pension cost charge for

## **Unrestricted Funds (General)**
The General fund is unrestricted and available for the general purposes of Ryedale Carers Support.
## **Designated Funds**
Reflects the redundancy and wind down provision of £52,553.
## **Restricted Funds**
The current restricted funds are only available for the purposes specified for each fund, which are:
NYC Carers Break Service - supported by NYC Health and Adult Services and the Integrated Care Board to provide a carers break service, using volunteers to give carers a break.
Support for Carers Scarborough & Caring Together Whitby - in partnership with Ryedale Carers Support delivering a range of services across Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale.
Our Neighbourhood - is about connecting communities and providing support to people who may be isolated, lonely or need a bit of extra help. It is a project run in partnership with Carers Plus Yorkshire who hold the contract with NYC. It was previously named 'My Neighbourhood' and includes the balance of unspent funds from the One Stop project.
One Stop - run in conjunction with Ryedale Charities Together the Community One Stop is a doorway into the voluntary sector providing information, advice and free activities. This has now merged into the Our Neighbourhood project and will continue to provide information, advice and activities to the lonely and isolated in Ryedale.

## **13.2 Details of Funds Held cont….**
Carers Support Group - one monthly support group to offer carers the opportunity to share concerns, receive support and take a break from their caring role.
Volunteer Expenses - supported by The Robert McAlpine Foundation to enable Ryedale Carers Support to recruit more volunteers and pay their out of pocket expenses.
Lythe Farmer's Breakfast - a monthly group to enable those who are less able to interact and find themselves isolated, to meet for a chat and refreshments and listen to a rural or locally inspired speaker. This now includes the remaining funds under Plough to Plate as this is essentially a renaming of the same client group and purpose.
Tea & Tunes - a quarterly event for people to come together to participate in a performance by local musicians, followed by conversation, tea and cake. This is also supported by the balance of unspent funds in the FEF (Food and Essentials) fund given by NYC.
