East London Connect Annual Review 2020

It goes without saying that this year has been a year like no other, and it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge some of the unbelievable challenges we have faced as a nation. Whether it be the recurring national lockdowns, ongoing fear and uncertainty about Covid-19, the ever increasing calls for racial justice in the UK and America, or the widespread disruption to young people’s A-levels and GCSE results, we have all been affected in one way or another. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to firstly acknowledge the heroic efforts of teachers, organisations and key workers, who have worked tirelessly to help as many people as possible at this time. It is such commitment and resilience that has spurred East London Connect on to continue its work in helping young people achieve their full educational and career potential.

Through our work with Catholic Palmer Academy and Alec Reed Academy, we offered A- level history students the opportunity to take part in a Master’s dissertation project exploring ways to integrate black British history into the curriculum. The valuable insights and potential for this project have been highlighted by the Cambridge Centre for Social Innovation (see link for more information: BAME (cam.ac.uk). We are grateful for all the teachers and support staff who helped make this project possible. We will be continuing to provide career and education services in schools and exploring socially distanced or online provision for higher education or employment advice.

As part of our work with organisations to help increase diversity and opportunities for people from underrepresented groups, we launched an innovative two-way mentoring scheme with the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office. Our mentees, comprised of 10 young people of ethnic heritage, are being mentored by 10 senior members of the Foreign Office from different departments. The aim of this scheme is to initiate two-way conversation and learning, not only from senior individuals but also from the young people who bring unique contributions and different cultural perspectives. Despite the limitations of Covid-19 and social distancing, we have successfully navigated a truly international virtual mentoring scheme which includes virtual work experience starting in January 2021.

East London Connect is also determined to ensure that young people from underrepresented groups, or those experiencing some form of disadvantage, can still achieve their full educational potential. Therefore, we are launching the East London Connect bursary, starting with one student. Students from our partner schools who will be starting university in September 2021, will be eligible to apply for the bursary, which is available for the duration of their degree course. In addition, the successful student will receive mentoring and career advice, as well as opportunities to share their educational experiences with their school.

Also, as part of our commitment to reaching more young people and creating long-term change, we will be starting work with a primary school to help inspire career and educational success at an earlier stage.

Finally, I would like to thank our Trustees Ade and Korede, our new member of staff Caroline, supporters and friends for your continuous encouragement over the years. East London Connect would like to wish you a safe and positive start to 2021.

Warm regards,

Richard Akerele
