# **14[th] Annual Report for the Year Ended 31[st] March 2023**

(5[th ] Annual Report, after its formation as Zone of the Mar Thoma Church - UK & Europe on 1[st] January 2018)

_“O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.” - Psalms 95:1-3_

## **1. Introduction**

It is with immense gratitude to God Almighty we present the 5[th] annual report of the Mar Thoma Church UK – Europe Zone, charity incorporated (CIO), and in doing so, we chronicle our beginning, starting as a prayer fellowship 65 years ago and the formation of the Council of the Mar Thoma Parishes in Europe in 2010. We thank God for his abundant grace and mercy in enabling us to function as an independent Zone of the Mar Thoma Church in the Diocese of North America and Europe.

After two tumultuous years with the effect of Covid 19 and associated restrictions, we were free to assemble for worship and organise events and activities in person, both at the parish and as a Zone. The global economy started 2022 with what appeared to be a new strength. Then came the Ukraine war, which has raised geopolitical tensions. This, in turn, have had a significant impact on the global economy. Resulting in a significant increase in the cost of commodities driving inflation. It is anticipated that the impact of the Covid 19 pandemic and the ongoing Ukraine conflict will be continued to be felt in the coming years. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monarch who reigned for 70 years, passed away peacefully on 8[th] September 2022.

In the midst of uncertainties and challenges, we have witnessed God’s amazing grace as a worshipping community. All our parishes and congregations have witnessed a significant and steady increase in membership. The growth is driven by inward immigration due to skill shortages in the local population, mainly in health care. In recent years we are also seeing significant growth in the foreign student population from South Asia to UK and Europe.

The Council of the Mar Thoma Parishes in Europe, continue to monitor the impact of the economic fallout from the various global and local events. As of now, we had minimal impact on our ability to function as a UK and Europe Zone of the Mar Thoma Church.

The Council of the Mar the Thoma Parishes in Europe (COMPE) is a unique instrument of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church instituted for conducting effective administrative coordination of all Parishes and Congregations in UK and Europe Zone in the Diocese of North America and Europe. The following annual report is presented here as a fulfilment of Clause 4 of the rules of the COMPE.

## **2. Governance and Administration**

In addition, His Grace

blessed with his presence at all our important events in person and also through various digital platforms. The progress we have made in the Zonal set-up, in particular the successful completion of the Zonal Office and Bishop’s Residence, is a testament to Thirumeni’s unwavering commitment, visionary leadership and dedicated service to the Zone. We are grateful for the leadership, dedication, commitment and pastoral care of our Diocesan Episcopa.

## **4. Zonal Office and Bishop’s Residence**

As per the decision of the Zonal Assembly to acquire a residential property to serve as the Zonal Office and Bishop’s Residence. A suitable property was identified at 149a Ashgrove Road, Ashford, Middlesex. The contract for the purchase of the land, together with the construction of a detached property with four bedrooms, one office room and four car parking spaces, was signed on February 2022.

The foundation stone, which was blessed by the Rt Revd Dr Isaac Mar Philoxenos Episcopa on 10[th] May 2021, was laid by Very Revd P T Thomas on 10[th] February 2022 after a short service of prayer and thanksgiving led by Very Revd P T Thomas and Revd Binu J Varghese. The building work has progressed at pace and achieved practical completion in early February 2023. The Zone has taken possession of the building under contract. The building was fully furnished in readiness for dedication and occupation.

The newly constructed Zonal Office and Bishop’s Residence was dedicated to the glory of God on 4[th] March 2023. The service of dedication was led by His Grace, the Most Revd Dr Theodosius Mar Thoma Metropolitan, in the presence of the Diocesan Bishop Rt Revd Isaac Mar Philoxenos Episcopa, respected clergy of the Zone and representatives from parishes and congregations. It was a solemn occasion and answer to the prayers of the faithful over the years and the fulfilment of a dream to establish a Zonal set up to serve the current and future needs of the Mar Thoma diaspora in UK and Europe.

Details of the building funds received, and expenses incurred are provided in the financial statement. It was only possible through the generosity of the members and their creative efforts in raising funds in support of the project. We acknowledge the efforts and contribution made by the clergy, parish and congregation office bearers in collecting and remitting the respective share of the monies from parishes to the Zonal Development Project Fund. In addition, to bridge the shortfall in project funding, “My Share for My Zone” collection drive was launched. This consists of £100 coupon with a door prize. We acknowledge the leadership of Revd Saju Chacko in leading this initiative, supported by Mr Bijo Kuruvilla and Adv Jacob P Abraham as co-convenors.

We acknowledge and thank the building committee for a project well managed, delivered on time, on budget and to an exacting standard. We owe a debt of gratitude to the building committee convenor Mr P M Mathew, Revd Binu J Varghese Zonal Vice President, Mr Thomas Abraham, Zonal Treasurer and Adv Jacob P Abraham, building committee member.

## **5.1 Intercessory Prayer**

The Zonal intercessory prayer, which was started in the midst of Covid 19, continued in 2022 with a revised schedule. The intercessory prayer sessions consists of praise, short meditation and prayer and were a timely source of comfort, strength and solace to all those who attend. Revd Binu J Varghese served as the coordinator for the Zonal intercessory prayer.

## **5.8.2 Light to Life Project**

We, as a Zone, have adopted the “Light to Life” project as part of our outreach program. The project was initiated by our Diocesan Episcopa, Rt Revd Dr Isaac Mar Philoxenos Episcopa. The Zone have signed a service agreement with Holistic Child Development India for the design of the program, implementation, monitoring and periodic reporting. Initial response from the membership have been very positive. Promoters have been appointed to solicit support for this worthwhile initiative at the parish level.

## **5.9 YOUMAT (Youth Ministry among Mar Thoma Students in UK & Europe)**

Since its inception in 2021, YOUMAT, the campus ministry, an initiative of Mar Thoma Church UK -Europe Zone, continued its activities in 2022 - 2023. The initiative provides pastoral care and support to both local and overseas students and newly arrived young migrants. The region continues to witness a large influx of the student community into UK and Europe. Podcasts and social media campaigns were launched to maintain contact and media presence. Around 400 students have now registered with the program and regularly participate in the various activities and are supported during the year.

YOUMAT volunteers coordinate activities with the help of local parish vicars and youth fellowship members. The individuals are contacted through phone and social media platforms to ensure their well-being and offer advice and guidance as required. Given the significant number of arrivals, one of the challenges that YOUMAT continue to face is the awareness of such an initiative in the Zone. We hope to address such concerns in the upcoming Year. Revd Jobi Koruthu continues to serve as the director of this program with a team of volunteers. The Zonal Council acknowledge the leadership and passion in driving the mission among the youths. The Zonal Council place on record our appreciation to Rev Jobi Koruth, the convenors and the volunteers.

**MALANKARA MAR THOMA SYRIAN CHURCH** UK & EUROPE ZONE

Revd Dn Subin Mathew Parayil was ordained as Kasheesha of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church on 11[th] June 2022. Rt Revd Dr Isaac Mar Philoxenos Episcopa led the ordination service held at Tabore Mar Thoma Church, Manchester. Revd Subin Mathew Parayil is the second person from UK - Europe Zone to enter the full-time ministry of the Mar Thoma Church. We offer our congratulations and pray that Revd Subin Mathew Parayail be filled with the Holy Spirit to be a good and faithful servant of the Lord.

We express our gratitude to everyone who participated, supported, and encouraged us, including the Vicars, Zonal Assembly Members, Zonal Organisations’ Leaders, and members of Parishes and Congregations in the Zone. We appreciate your prayers and cooperation. Revd Binu J Varghese, in addition to his responsibilities as the Vicar of St Johns Mar Thoma Church, Hounslow and the Bishop’s Secretary, has led and coordinated Zonal activities and communications. We thank Revd Binu J Varghese and his family for their commitment, leadership and continued support to the Zone.

Zone is also supported by many lay members in maintaining a Zonal Office and its activities. We acknowledge and thank them all for their support and contributions, who have helped us with the management of digital platforms and promotion of major programmes of the Zone.

## **13. Conclusion**

In Jeremiah 29:11, we read, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. When we look back, the words of prophet Jeremiah is very much true in our personal life and our church life. This should give us confidence to go forward, trusting in God and in God’s grace and mercy. We thank God for enabling us to worship the living God in person, free of restrictions, and organise programmes to strengthen our fellowship. We are grateful to God for providing us the vision to move forward with the project to establish a Zonal Office and Bishop’s Residence and for providing us the resources to complete the project and dedicate it for the glory of God.

Significant increase in membership presents itself both challenges and opportunities for us at the parish and Zonal levels. It is our fervent hope that we will rise to the challenge and provide pastoral care and assistance to those who are new to the Zone. It is also important that we recognise the need to be true to the faith and practice of our Church and make it relevant and meaningful to the younger generation.

What we are today are results of the prayers and efforts of our forefathers. The future will be the result of our efforts today. Therefore, let us work together to make the Church, the body of Christ, as vibrant and meaningful to the members and a blessing to those around us.

For and on behalf of the Zonal Council.

## **Independent Examiner’s Report to the trustees of the charity The Council of the Mar Thoma Parishes in Europe (117503) Report of the Independent Examiner to the trustees on the accounts of the Charity for the year ended 31 Mar 2022**

I report on the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 March 2021 which have been prepared in accordance with the Charities Act 2011 (the Act) and with the Financial Reporting Standard 102 (effective January 2015) adapted to meet the needs of unincorporated organisations, as modified by the Statement of Recommended Practice for Accounting and Reporting issued by the Charity Commission for England & Wales, effective January 2015 (The SORP), under the historical cost convention and the accounting policies set out in the notes of the accounts.

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**

The Charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements. The trustees are satisfied that the audit requirement of Section 144(1) of the Charities Act 2011 (the Act) does not apply, and that there is no requirement in the governing document or constitution of the Charity for the conducting of an audit. As a consequence, the trustees have elected that the financial statements be subject to independent examination.

Having satisfied myself that the charity is not subject to audit, and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to: -

- a) examine the accounts under section 145 of the Act;

- b) to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5) (b) of the Act; and;

- c) to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

## **Basis of opinion and scope of work undertaken**

I conducted my examination in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners for England & Wales in relation to the conducting of an independent examination, referred to above. An independent examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the Charity and of the accounting systems employed by the Charity and a comparison of the financial statements presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the financial statements and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning such matters. The purpose of the examination is to establish as far as possible that there have been no breaches of the Charities legislation and that the financial statements comply with the SORP, on a test basis, of evidence relevant to the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements.

The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and information supplied by the trustees in the course of the examination is not subjected to audit tests or enquiries, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the financial statements, and in particular, I express no opinion as to whether the financial statements give a true and fair view of the affairs of the charity, and my report is limited to the matters set out in the statement below.

I planned and performed my examination so as to satisfy myself that the objectives of the independent examination are achieved and before finalising the report I obtain written assurances from the trustees of all material matters.

Subject to the limitations upon the scope of my work as detailed above, in connection with my examination, I can confirm that:-
