Annual Report For The Year Ended 31[st] March 2021

12[th] Annual Report (01-04-2020 to 31-03-2021)

(3rd annual report, after its formation as Zone of the Mar Thoma Church UK - Europe on 1st January 2018.)

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18.

Introduction.

The report year 2020/21 will go down in history as a year dominated by a small virus which brought nations of the world and its people to its knees. Prevailing economic and political events and challenges paled into insignificance. As we prepare this annual report on behalf of the Council of Mar Thoma Parishes in Europe (COMPE), we are still in the midst of the Global Pandemic.

In Isaiah 41: 10. we state, “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand”.

We as a worshiping community, as individuals, parishes and the zone, have been reassured by God’s promise and His victorious right hand has enabled us to continue our activities in “the new normal”. As a zonal worshiping community, we were able to experience and witness God’s amazing grace and mercy.

“God created digital too”. Digital platforms have enabled us to extend places of worship into our homes and continue our worship services as parishes and zone. These digital platforms also enabled us to function as zone and conduct zonal programs and activities.

On October 18[th] , 2020, our beloved Metropolitan the Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Mar Thoma, the 21[st] Mar Thoma, was called to his eternal home at the age of 90. His passing, especially during this unprecedented time, has posed many challenges to the faithful and the church in dealing with their grief. His demise was a great loss not just to the Mar Thoma church, but also to the worldwide Christian community and community at large.

On 5[th] May 2021, Padmabushan, His grace, the Most Rev. Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostom Marthoma Valiya Metropolitan was called to his eternal home at the age of 103. Beloved Valiya Thirumeni was a guiding light in the life of the faithful as well as the nation for nearly a century. The recognition and citations made by the federal and state governments are a testament to his contribution to the national consciousness and his unstinting work uplifting the poor and downtrodden in the society.

The demise of the two Metropolitans in quick succession was a great loss to the church. Their time as the Primates will go down in history as a time when Mar Thoma church has grown beyond the shores of India and became a global entity.

Rt. Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Theodosius Episcopa was elevated to the position of Suffragan Metropolitan on 12[th] February 2020 and installed as the 22[nd] Mar Thoma with the title Theodosius Mar Thoma Metropolitan on 14[th] November 2020.

Thirumeni was our diocesan bishop during the time of rapid expansion of the UK and Europe region and played a significant role in establishing the parishes and congregations as well as the administrative set up for the region of UK and Europe (COMPE).

2

We thank God for the wonderful way Almighty has led and guided us as a worshiping community in the midst of unprecedented global pandemic. We have witnessed and experienced God’s abiding presence and grace during this time.

Covid 19 took the world by surprise and continues to cause tremendous suffering. It has changed the way we live, work and worship beyond our imagination. It is also anticipated that the pandemic will change the world as we know it and it is unlikely that we will return to the old. But we as people of faith, continue in hope, since Our Lord Jesus Christ has risen, conquering death.

As we conclude and report on the activities of the past year. May the Lord Almighty bless our Zone and make all our efforts for His Glory and for the extension of His Kingdom.

The trustees are continuously monitoring the situation to ensure the charity responds to the challenges and to continue to support various activities. The trustees would also like to express their thanks and gratitude to the Vicars and all parishioners in the zone for their continued support during these difficult times.

Internal Examiners Report to the Trustees & Members of The Council of The Mar Thoma Parishes in Europe.

On accounts for the year ended 31st March 2021

Charity no 1175503

Set out on pages 16 to 28

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts.

Basis of independent examiner’s statement.

Our examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

Independent examiner's statement

In connection with our examination, no material matters have come to our attention which gives us cause to believe that in, any material respect:

• the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

We have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Independent Examiner's Report to the trustees of the charity

The Council of the Mar Thoma Parishes in Europe (117503)

Report of the Independent Examiner to the trustees on the

accounts of the Charity for the year ended 31 Mar 2021

I report on the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 March 2021 which have been prepared in accordance with the Charities Act 2011 (the Act) and with the Financial Reporting Standard 102 (effective January 2015) adapted to meet the needs of unincorporated organisations, as modified by the Statement of Recommended Practice for Accounting and Reporting issued by the Charity Commission for England & Wales, effective January 2015 (The SORP), under the historical cost convention and the accounting policies set out in the notes of the accounts.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The Charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements. The trustees are satisfied that the audit requirement of Section 144(1) of the Charities Act 2011 (the Act) does not apply, and that there is no requirement in the governing document or constitution of the Charity for the conducting of an audit. As a consequence, the trustees have elected that the financial statements be subject to independent examination.

Having satisfied myself that the charity is not subject to audit, and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to: -

to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of opinion and scope of work undertaken

I conducted my examination in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners for England & Wales in relation to the conducting of an independent examination, referred to above. An independent examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the Charity and of the accounting systems employed by the Charity and a comparison of the financial statements presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the financial statements and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning such matters. The purpose of the examination is to establish as far as possible that there have been no breaches of the Charities legislation and that the financial statements comply with the SORP, on a test basis, of evidence relevant to the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements.

14

MAR THOMA CHURCH UK & EUROPE ZONE

The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and information supplied by the trustees in the course of the examination is not subjected to audit tests or enquiries, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the financial statements, and in particular, I express no opinion as to whether the financial statements give a true and fair view of the affairs of the charity, and my report is limited to the matters set out in the statement below.

I planned and performed my examination so as to satisfy myself that the objectives of the independent examination are achieved and before finalising the report I obtain written assurances from the trustees of all material matters.

Subject to the limitations upon the scope of my work as detailed above, in connection with my examination, I can confirm that:-

This is a report in respect of an examination carried out under section 145 of the Act and in accordance with any directions given by the Commission under subsection (5)(b) of that section which are applicable;

and that no matter has come to my attention in connection with my examination which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements :-
