North London Pastoral Assistants – Report of the Trustees , Year Ended 31[st] August 2022 

The Trust continued to offer supervised experience of parish ministry within a Church of England Catholic context. The scheme remains open to women and men, and welcomes applications from candidates wishing to broaden their worshipping and ministry experience in an inner city setting, as well as from those already more familiar with Catholic parish life. 

The Trust continued to receive generous funding from a range of charities including The Church of England Ministry Experience Scheme; The Cleaver Ordination Candidates Fund; The Fellowship of St John; The Greig Trust; and The Number One Trust.  It was able to house Pastoral Assistants in housing generously provided by The Diocese of London, and by a private individual within one of the parishes. 

For 2021-2, the Trust offered placements to six out of a possible eight young people to explore a vocation to ministry in the Church. Two Pastoral Assistants were recommended for training and have now commenced their studies in Mirfield College. One has accepted a place at at St Stephen’s House, one is pursuing non ordained ministry within the Church of England, one is staying on the scheme for a second year to continue the process of discernment.  One left the scheme during the year for personal reasons. 

Daily life continues to provide an invaluable grounding for future ministry. Pastoral assistants have taken assemblies and supported pupils in RE lessons and Messy Church activities at local primary schools. They have attended local YMCA youth activities, supported activities for older people in local community centres, helped in chaplaincy work at local hospitals and visited sick or isolated members of their congregations in their homes and in hospital. 

During the year, a full series of in-person formation sessions was provided – the previous year, due to lockdown, less was offered, the majority of it online. Six sessions took place in St Andrew’s Church, Holborn, with one in Salisbury. PAs and their formation supervisors also participated in a Quiet Day in a Franciscan house. NLPA also supported the cost of residential retreats for those PAs who wished, and enabled PAs to attend parish pilgrimages to Walsingham and other places alongside members of their congregations. Towards the end of the year, the Formation tutors, Frs Eric Lobsinger and Ben Kerridge led the PAs through a very full 6 day formation trip to Rome.

Basis of preparation
The accounts have been prepared under the historical cost convenlion with items
reeognised at cost or transaction value unless othernise stated in the relevant notes to
these accounts. The accounts have been prepared in accordance with the Statement of
Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities preparing the
accounts in accordance with the Financial reporting Standard applicable in the UK
and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) {effectiN'e l Januar! 2015) (Charities SORP (FRS
102), the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and
Republic of Irela￿a (FRS 102) and the Charities A¢t 2011.
Assessment of going concern
The Trustees consider that there are no material uncertainties about the Charity's
abilitv to continue as a going concern.

Expenditure
All expenditure is included on an accounts basTS and is recognised when there is a
legal or constructive obligation to pay for expenditure.
Charitable expenditure cotnprise grants ivhich are provided for when approved by the
Trustees, and support costs which are identifiable as wholl}T 01 mainly in support of
the Charity's objectives based on the allocation of sthff time and office resources.
Support costs are those costs which enable fijnd generator and charitable activities to
be undertaken. Where activities incurred relate to more than one cost category, it is
apportioned on the basis of time incurred.
Taxation
As a registered Charity, the Council is exempt from tsx on assessable income applied
within the objects of the Council.
Unrestricted funds
Unrestricted funds comprise those fimds which the Trustees are free to use foT any
puryose in furtherance of the charitable objects.
Debtors
DebtOTS are recognised initially at fair value. Subsequent io initial recognition they are
measured at amortised cost using the effective interesi method: less any impairn]ent
losses.
Creditors
Creditors are recognised initially at fair value. Subsequent to initial recognition thev
are measured at amorti5ed cost ￿Sing the effective interest method.
Cash and cash equiv8lents
Cash and cash equivalents consist of cash on hand and balances with bar￿, and
investments in monev market instniments which are readily convertible: being those
with original maturities of three months or less.
