**THE LEEDS BEEKEEPERS’ ASSOCIATION** BRANCH OF THE YORKSHIRE BEEKEEPERS’ ASSOCIATION AFFILIATED WITH THE BRITISH BEEKEEPERS’ ASSOCIATION Registered Charity No. 1175455

The Charity's name is Leeds Beekeepers’ Association, also known as LBKA, and the principal address is Temple Newsam Park, Leeds, LS15 0EA.

The names of the Charity Trustees are: Andrew Hebden, Chair Michael Badger, Vice Chair Karen Gauldie, Secretary Helen Lowry, Membership Secretary Kathleen Slater, Treasurer Catherine Graham, Education Officer Duncan Brearley David Haigh Clare McGettigan Stephen J Fox Angela Utley

## Structure and Governance

Our governing document is our Constitution, adopted 26th October 2016 and last amended on 24[th] November 2021. We are an unincorporated association, and our trustees are appointed or reappointed at our Annual General meeting held in November.

Membership of LBKA is open to anyone interested in the craft of beekeeping in the Leeds area. Trustees oversee all the day to day running of the Association.

LBKA is part of Yorkshire Beekeepers Association, which in turn is part of British Beekeepers Association, to whom a fee is payable annually for each member. From the British Beekeepers Association, we receive third party insurance for members, assistance with educational material, newsletters and many other benefits. We also have ongoing contact with the National Bee Unit with regard to bee health.

## Activities

Our objectives are to promote the craft of beekeeping in all its aspects, with particular emphasis on helping our beekeepers and informing the wider public of the importance of bees.

Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, our activities have been seriously curtailed, although individual beekeepers have been able to care for their own bees. Thankfully, during 2021 our activities have been returning to normal. Our weekly meetings through the active season were reinstated. Although we have been able to have some evening meetings such as winter talks and trustee meetings in person, many have still been held on line.

Training in the apiary has recommenced as much as possible. Our usual Taster Days were held, as were the BBKA Basic Assessments, and the usual Winter Course did take place.

Although outreach events were still very thin on the ground, we did as many as were appropriate. These included a number of school events as well as the Tadcrafters group in Tadcaster and the Otley Annual Science Fair in November.

## The Apiary

In the last 12 months, we have invested time and monies improving the teaching apiary at Temple Newsam. Activities have included the building of a new storage area for both storing and hygienically cleaning hive boxes, replacing older hive boxes, apiary garden

clearance including the initiation of a replanting program and providing new beekeeping caddies for groups inspecting the bees. In general, hygiene procedures have been improved.

We were also able to re-establish an observation hive so visitors to Temple Newsam Farm can safely view some frames of bees without the need for a beekeeper to be present. We invested in new nucleus hives so we could demonstrate the use of nucs in beekeeping to our members, as well as providing a source of bees and queens should we suffer any losses during the season.

Finally, we introduced a couple of new colonies to the apiary (after a disease check by the seasonal bee inspector), both helping restock after winter losses, but also adding new genetics to the bee gene pool at the apiary.

In the community we have, as usual, provided a service to remove swarms of bees from gardens and property, and re-home them as appropriate.

We are thankful for the generous hours contributed by LBKA members, both Trustees and non-Trustees, working on our educational courses and our outreach work. These have numbered around 30 individuals over the year.

## Financial

Our income derives mostly from educational courses, and subscriptions from our members. Following increases in our payments to British Beekeepers Association, we have had to increase our subscription prices. In addition, we have introduced some new membership categories. Details are:

Individual subscription £33 .00 Associate subscription £12.00 Partner subscription £19.00 Social subscription £5.00 Junior subscription £10.00 School subscription £33.00

Having held the prices of our Beginners’ Courses for a number of years, we have now increased them to £120 to reflect the increased costs of running them.

At the end of this financial year, our membership stood at: Individual - 158 Family - 43 Associate - 9 Honorary - 1 Schools – 1

We are in a healthy position financially, with cash at bank around £100,000. As mentioned last year a chunk of this money is earmarked to be spent to refurbish the Association premises, which will involve some rebuilding and general renovation of the site. This work is ongoing.

## Plans

The coming year will see more outreach activities, with emphasis on schools events. We have regular commitments to such events as Countryside Live and local Science Fairs. We will continue to improve our education programme where possible, with particular emphasis on retaining existing beekeepers and improving their knowledge and standards. In the course of our activities, we continue to provide all necessary protective clothing and ensure full access for disabled people who have an interest in beekeeping.

Signed on behalf of the Charity's Trustees

Kathleen Slater Treasurer
