## **Structure, governance and management**

Charity’s Trusts:

- Governing Document: CIO - FOUNDATION Registered 26 Oct 2017

- Charitable Incorporated Organisation

- Trustees are appointed as per the charity commission guidelines

Our charity is run by 4 trustees, led by the chair of trustees, who have met regularly to plan, review and evaluate our activities.

## **Names of trustees who manage the charity:**

Miss Seliat Agboola (Chair) Miss Khudeja Begum Miss Fatima Patel Miss Azeezat Akande

We are supported by a wider network of volunteers, totalling 10, who help to carry out the charity’s activities. Trustees agree to review and evaluate the appointment of trustees every 3 years and in selecting individuals for appointment as charity trustees, the trustees consider the skills, knowledge and experience needed for the effective administration of the CIO. Our trustees are encouraged to take part in the charity’s activities as well as attend seminars and courses which they believe will enhance their contribution to the charity. Trustees have met for an annual review and regularly review the key policies that the charity is governed upon as well as our constitution.

## **Objectives and activities**

Our objects as outlined in our governing document are to: advance the Islamic religion for the benefit of the public, particularly Muslim women in the UK, by means of raising awareness, providing information and offering advice about the Qur'anic scripture.

We have realised these objects through the following activities:

1. Producing and/or distributing literature on the Qur’an to enlighten others about the Qur’an and the Islamic religion

2. Providing coaching and mentoring to support Muslim Women and girls in their study of the Qur’an and the Islamic religion

3. Organising lectures and gatherings for Muslim Women to meet to discuss the Qur’an and the Islamic religion

Trustees have worked to ensure that all activities planned and undertaken have been done with regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit. Trustees believe that our activities encourage those that we work with to develop in a holistic manner thus becoming the best version of themselves and positively affecting their families, communities and supporting their ability to contribute to society at large.

## **Achievements and performance**

We launched in early 2017 and became a registered charity on 26/10/2017. We’ve raised awareness by having stalls at various events, organised online and in-person Meet Ups as part of our Qur’an & Me programme and planned and carried out Qur’an retreats. We've collaborated with Qur'an teachers and coaches to develop and roll out long term programmes such as our Qur'an Coach Training Programme and Internalising Juz Amma programme. We’ve prepared literature and shared this through our online social media platforms, our newsletter and our in-person activities. We ran a Ramadan fundraising campaign using the Launchgood crowdfunding platform to raise funds to cover our activities.

## **Major Projects**

## **QUR’AN & ME programme**

A series of online events (3), workshops (2) and a live talk show where women were interviewed to share their own journeys of learning the Qur’an in order to inspire others.

## **QUR’AN COACH TRAINING PROGRAMME (QCTP)**

QCTP is a programme to develop advanced Qur’an students and enable them to coach and support other women on their Qur’an journeys. We advertised the programme and continued to interview and select 10 coaches to join the programme and begin their training. These coaches came from different age groups and lifestyles. Training was given in house and supported by other training partners specialising in the Qur’anic Sciences. Coaches completed modules on Qur’an recitation and tajweed theory and another on memorising the Qur’an. They journaled and completed coaching calls with senior coaches to monitor, reflect and advance their development.

## **ANNUAL QUR’AN RETREAT: The Opening, Rediscovering Surat Al Fatihah**

Following our successful Qur’an retreat in 2017 we directed majority of our time and resources towards organising our second annual retreat. 53 adults with 3 children attended. This was an opportunity for women to take some time out from their busy lives and to learn more about the Qur'an and associated Islamic concepts. The bulk of activities that took place were lectures, workshops and seminars on specific Islamic themes and topics from the Qur'an. This learning was supplemented by coaching sessions- one to one sessions for attendees to sit with a teacher of the

Qur'an and assess their own progress and plan for improvements with respect to their learning of it. Accommodation, meals, retreat resources, and activities were included in the retreat programme.

## **INTERNALISING JUZ AMMA**

Organised and implemented a monthly series with a teacher specialising in the Qur’anic sciences. 132 women registered for this opportunity to learn about the themes and life lessons from a particular portion of the Qur’an.

## **Financial review**

At the end of the reporting period, Qur’an Halaqah had

Income **£ 12,323** Spending **£ 12,240**

## **RESERVES POLICY**

The trustees aim to maintain free reserves in unrestricted funds at a level which equates to 3 months of the charity’s main overhead costs. This at the moment corresponds to low reserves as our main overhead costs are only to maintain our online presence through our website and other platforms and as such are covered by donations. Our major outgoings are in relation to our annual retreats- this is a ticketed event and this ticket price is set to cover the outgoing costs (venue hire, food, speaker expenses- travel, resources, printing, activities and financial assistance). We factor in requests for financial assistance so as to ensure all that wish to attend the retreat can do so.
