In April 2022, we welcomed Family 3, who have 5 children. They moved into their home in N13, with an 18 month tenancy offered by a private landlord. In June 2022, we learnt that the Home Office had mistakenly referred them on to us, as the father already had British citizenship and had worked in the UK for several years, sending money home to his family in Afghanistan. At the point that the U.S, allies and coalition partners announced the withdrawal of all their forces, the father went back to Afghanistan to bring his family to the UK. It would appear that it was at this point that the mistake about eligibility was made by the Home Office.
Having got to know the family and their level of need,a collective decision was made by the ERW core group at this point to continue to offer the family practical support upon request, but cease the usual level of financial support we would offer to an eligible family.
Family 1 had already moved out of their home in Enfield to a town in Derbyshire. They weren’t happy there and could not get the necessary support for their eldest son, who has additional needs. They moved to Stoke on Trent during the year. ERW assisted the family with part payment of a large utility bill (see accounts).
Family 2, who have 4 children, continue to be settled in their home in Bush Hill Park. The children are doing well in school. There was a major leak in the skylight in the roof of the property which caused substantial interior water damage over time .ERW made a substantial contribution to the repairs (see accounts).In January 2023, the rent on the property was increased by £200 per month to £2000. This is beyond Housing Benefit levels of £1800. A top up was necessary, which the family could not afford. ERW made a collective decision to cover the cost of the shortfall for the duration of the 12 month tenancy.
An application was made to resettle a fourth family. Initially, it was intended to welcome a family from Ukraine, in response to the emerging crisis. We secured an offer of a Housing Association property, courtesy of Origin Housing. However, we established that a Ukrainian family would be ineligible under the community sponsorship scheme and so we applied to resettle an Afghani family. We were very fortunate to retain the commitment to this of Origin Housing, who provided a 2/3 bedroom house in N13, at an affordable rent. The couple, who have 3 children, arrived in April 2023. We supported the family in the usual areas. Early signs are that they are already quite adjusted to life in the UK, having spent 18 months in a hotel in Canterbury.
Prior to the arrival of Family 4, ERW attracted 3 new volunteers who provided a lot of help in setting up the family home, in advance of their arrival.
Financial position:
As can be seen from the accounts, ERW incurred significant expenditure in this reporting year (specifically-the contributions to the repairs of F2’s home and the rent top up). The rent top up is a particular concern, not only in relation to our finances but also as an indicator of the prohibitive cost of local rented accommodation.
Housing Benefit levels have not been uprated since 2020, so they are now well behind market rents.
