Objertives and Artivitles
Our oims
The object of Learn to Love to Read, as set out In its governing document, Is, In accordance wlth
Christian principles, to advance the education of children and their farTtilies acro55 the UK, in
partlcular but not excluslvely by provldlng Ilteracy support In partnershlp with prlmary schools,
churche5 and other organisations. In practice, the charity currently operate5 501ely in the London
Borough of Wand5WOrth.
Research Shows disadvantsged children are le55 likely to read well than their more affluent peers and
that poor reading skills in childhood generally result in limited literacy as adults, bringing well-
recognised risks of unemployment, poor health and low wages. We forge partnerships with schools
serving disadvantaged families. Government statistics show that in surnrner 2025, 25% of Year 6
pupils did not meet the expected standard in reading at the end of their time at primary school.
Every Child a Reader- we strive to make that vision a reality here in Wandsworth, always working for
the public benefit.

We are a small charity, working solely in Wandsworth and ernbedded in that local community. We
generally partner with primary schools whose catchment area includes a high proportion of families
who received the pupil premiun7 grant or have English as a second language. Our work takes place on
our partner schools, premises, at loeal children's centres, libraries and community centres. The
Children who receive OE*r one-to-one reading support are selected by our schools because they need
additional help,. other initiatives learty years, classes and parent workshops) are more universal,
thotsgh specific effort is made to encourage disadvantaged families, who would benefit most, to
engage with them. We are recognised as being professional and yet unthreateningi often enga8ing
families known by our partners to be reluctant or uncertain.
Qur work..
We want all children to have frequenti Posltive reading experlence5 and to be enabled and
empowered by learnin8 to love to read. We want parent5 to become more enga8ed in their
children's learning and have the confidence and ski115 to support their child's reading at home.
We have a three-5trand approach..
We work with primary-age children who are finding learning to read challenging. In thi5
reporting period we Provided trained volunteer support across nine partner schools,
Improving readlng fluency, confidence •nd ènloyment.
We work with pre-schooler5 at risk of starting School poorly prepared for reading. We run
early literacy cla55es, introducing simple parental activitles to help close the'word gap, 50
often seen between disadvantaged ¢hlldren and their more affluent peers on startin8
school. We give Bifts of books and other Iltera¢y resource5 at each 5es51on to enable
familie5 to prartice what they have learnt at home.
We work with parents, equipping and encouraging them to offer support at home, running
workshops and farnlly learning events and offering individual support and regular
messaging.
Achlevements and Performanc•
We improve reading attainment, confidence and enjoyment in the prSmary-age children we
work with, by ensuring our one-to-one support from OUT team of trained volunteer5 15 of the
highest standard. Becomin8 a confident reader wlll change a chlld's Ilfe.
W• ¢ff•r paront-•nga8om•nt activities, e.g. messaBin8 s•rvi¢e$, wtsrk$hops. Childr•n wlth
interested parents pull ahead of the rest whatever their startin8 point.
We provide free early literacy classes. Children fiorn poorer backgrounds are then less likely
to be disadvantaged before education even begins.

"I wasn't sure what to expect reoding with much younger children than I hod in the Past, but reading

shoring reoding with them, letting the child choose o book they want to have reod to them, talking
about the stories, whot they'd do if they were in the story. A child s imaginotton Ns boundless.
"It's lovely tofollow the improvement in the confidence ondAluency of o child s reoding, and
