Music & Worship Foundation Annual Report & Accounts

## **Greetings from Hannah Hodges, chair of trustees**

Welcome to our annual report! We are passionate about releasing every church to see their worship potential and connect with God in ways that work for them. **With your support, churches are discovering their unique voice in worship.**

Music and Worship Foundation CIO works through the ministry of **Engage Worship** , resourcing and training the local church for creative, sustainable and world-changing worship. More recently, the **Evergreen** project has been supporting and forming younger worship leaders.

Read on page six about our charity’s 40th Anniversary celebrations, and how you can see this vision extended into the future.

Thank you for your invaluable support!

## WORK AND ACTIVITIES OF THE CIO, April ‘24- March ‘25

## **Leading & Teaching at Conferences & Events**

We began this year leading the All Age Celebrations at **Spring Harvest Minehead** . This was a great time to connect to a wide range of people. We also led a matinee called the Big Family Bible Story alongside Bob Hartman, and taught a workshop on Intergenerational Worship.

## “

“Ever since Spring Harvest my three year old has been making us sing songs from the _Whole Church Worship_ book and reading/singing along before he’ll go to bed. Very precious!”

_Libby_

In this year we also led worship and/or delivered teaching at events including:

- the **Faith in Business** conference in Cambridge,

- the **Salvation Army** national Mission Conference in Warwick,

- a retreat for those ministering to sex trafficked women in **Bulgaria,**

- the 5-11’s venue at the **Satellites** youth festival,

- _**Whole Church Worship**_ training for Leeds Diocese, St Albans Diocese and churches around Walsall,

- A _**Rest Is Worship**_ retreat at the beginning of Lent.

## “

“Today was so good. Thank you and Sara for sharing the gift God has given you both with us all today. It was an honour.” “So enjoyed your training last week in Walsall. It was refreshing, encouraging and inspirational.”

_Colin & Lucinda_

## **Online Courses**

In addition to these, we also ran two _**Whole Church Worship**_ online courses. Each ran over three evenings and reached booking capacity. This online format proved to be accessible for people from all over the world and across the UK.

## “

“I can’t recommend this [ _Whole Church Worship_ ] course highly enough. It has helped to transform how our church thinks about all age/whole church worship… We have incorporated many of the ideas and resources shared during the sessions.” _Natalie_

## **Production of Publications**

This year we released _**Bible Noise**_ by our long-term collaborator Sunil Chandy. This book brings together fresh thinking and resources for reading aloud the Bible in groups and services. It encourages us to listen anew to scripture, one another and marginalised voices.

We also published a free Small Group Guide for our popular book _**The Rest Is Worship**_ . We included gathering ideas, Bible discussion, reflective activities and questions for application. There are also links to listen to songs, watch videos and engage with podcast episodes.

Gemma created a beautiful set of _**Encouraging Scripture Postcards**_ .

## **40th Anniversary Celebration**

On 28th September 2024, around 40 people gathered to celebrate 40 years of the Music and Worship Foundation. It was a delight to be joined by people who have served MWF from across the past 4 decades - some of the original trustees from 1984, through the eras of MWF regions right through to involvement in Engage Worship and Evergreen today. After the event one attendee emailed to say:

## “

**“It was great to reflect on the past vision and activities, but also equally to cast pearls of vision and wisdom for the future. It’s interesting, how in so many ways the same, original, vision is still as relevant and needed as ever.”** _Noël_

You can see more pictures, video and read more about this event at **engageworship.org/MWF-40**

We used this opportunity to launch a new way of supporting our work. **Friends Of Engage Worship** is a growing group of people who give regularly to this ministry. In return we keep them up to date with news, prayer requests and more. These regular gifts enable us to plan for the future, and build relationships with our treasured supporters.

Thank you to everyone who supports our ministry - it makes a huge difference! If you are interested in contributing to our work visit **engageworship.org/friends**

## **Evergreen**

Evergreen is a project which has been running since 2022, aiming to nurture and grow worship leaders in the 18-35 age bracket. We have identified this as a group which needs specific support in order to grow their spiritual formation and emotional health.

A group of 10 young worship leaders completed the 2024 **Evergreen+** programme. This combined a weekend, day retreats and mentoring to encourage spiritual growth for sustainable ministry. Feedback from this group included:

## “

**“The residential and talking/reading about rest made me hungry to go on a solo retreat, which I then did, and it was a really wonderful experience!”**

## “

**“Evergreen has refreshed my soul time and time again. I am so grateful to show up to a retreat space where the team know my name and are invested in my wellbeing and seeing me grow. It has been an invaluable experience and I am so grateful. Thank you!”**

**“I’ve loved Evergreen & have been particularly loving the mentorship - we keep in contact loads and I really appreciated having that person!”** _Eleanor_

_Stephanie_

In 2025 we have focused on the wider Evergreen community, and ran a retreat day on 28th February in Guildford. Our guest speaker Tibz Adeniyi focussed on the topic **“Community, Conflict & Christ”** , which led to deep reflection and discussion on issues around conflict. We also gave space for people to worship without having to feel responsible for the music or technology, which is a great blessing to many!

## **Resourcing Worship Through Our Website**

The team spent a significant amount of time reviewing every one of the hundreds of free resources we offer on our website. Older or outdated ideas were either “retired” or updated in order to better serve the current needs of churches.

We have been posting weekly _Whole Church Worship_ sheets to further facilitate intergenerational worship. These are based on lectionary readings although they can be equally useful for those who don’t follow these set passages.

We launched a third season of our Pause/Pray reflective podcast. These episodes feature intentionally short, “express” prayers aimed at people engaging with God during junction moments in their day.

**----- Start of picture text -----**
“
**----- End of picture text -----**
_Charlie on the Anxiety episode of Pause/Pray:_

**“It was so, so helpful. It engaged my heart, my mind, my body and that was a big thing for me because that was where I was feeling stress and anxiety.”**

## **Commitment to Higher Education**

Sara and Sam taught an afternoon on _Creativity in Worship_ at **St Mellitus College** . Timo and Sam returned to **Nexus Institute of Creative Arts** to teach _The Rest Is Worship_ for a day. Sam taught a module on _Multimedia and Multisensory Worship_ for **London School of Theology** , as well as tutoring an MA module.

Rev. Eileen Osgood resigned as a Trustee and Chair on 29 January 2025. One new Trustee was appointed during the year: Naomi Buckler on 10 July 2024.

## Public Benefit:

Public Benefit is served by the activities described in this report. The Trustees take into account the Charity Commission’s guidance on Public Benefit in all relevant decisions.

## Policies:

MWF CIO holds policies including Safeguarding, Data Privacy, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion, Conflict of Interest, Trustee Recruitment, Complaints and others. These are all available on request.

## Reserves:

The Trustees’ policy is that if the level of reserves should fall below £10,000 immediate consideration would be given to reducing costs in whatever way possible, including curtailing the employees’ hours of work. Part of the Reserves are retained against a requirement in extremis to make redundancy payments.

## Future Plans:

The charity is about to release a new book, the _Really Useful Book For Leading Worship Without A Worship Team_ . We will continue to run training in-person and online, and provide resources through our website. We also plan to launch a new podcast, to keep people up to date with our news and developments. Regarding Evergreen, we are currently reflecting and reviewing our finances as to whether we can employ a new person to take over the role vacated by Gemma Scharnowski.

Music & Worship Foundation CIO - Annual Report & Accounts

## **Independent examiner’s report to the trustees of Music and Worship Foundation Charitable Incorporated Organisation (‘the CIO’)**

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the CIO for the year ended 31 March 2025.

## **Responsibilities and basis of report**

As the charity trustees of the CIO you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).

I report in respect of my examination of the CIO’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed all applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act

## **Independent examiner’s statement**

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe:

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the CIO as required by section 130 of the Act; or

2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
